We Will Be A Laughingstock

I will be seriously disappointed if Al Golden becomes our next coach.
As in not buying season tickets level of disappointment.
And that's your choice- no problem with that. But is Cristobal gonna get you pumped to renew? I hope these aren't the final two, that's all.

Just like Miami fans our fans need to remember this isn't the 80's anymore. Maybe I'd they gave a guy(who can recruit excellent) a chance for his team to develop they would actually win. They gave Randy Shannon 4 years and fired him after a second place finish. They fired Golden after less than 4 years despite coaching a team with 15 underclassman starters, a soph QB, and no senior OL starters.

He led a team with 6 guys drafted in the top 100 to a 6-7 record.

Guys he didn't recruit and from I understand shared a lot of friction with. Started 6-3 and they quit on him. I know a few kids who went there and said it was great until the "older kids" got to camp.

If we hire Al Golden.

The college football world will be laughing at us. The Peds. Syracuse. Even the Uconn fans will be laughing at us. He was fired in dramatic fashion at Miami and the fanbase absolutely hated him. The guy had banners flown over the stadium calling for his death knell.

Don't think for a second James Franklin won't be pointing that out to recruits next season if Al is coaching at Rutgers. Just remember that every reason we can point out to not hire Al Golden on these boards, will be pointed out to recruits by the other coaches in our conference. We hear he's a good recruiter and I won't argue he's still an upgrade to Flood. But how good of a recruiter will he be when the entire world knows he couldn't hack it at a blueblood school.

Hiring a coach that was thrown away by a better school will cement us as second tier, loser program in the eyes of the college football world. And that includes recruits.

Your nonsensical diatribe above has proven one thing. You simply look at records and not any of the back story behind how he got to those records and you have 0 concept anything considering Al Golden was PSU's first Choice and he interviewed for that job

Some people here are acting like basket cases. We would NOT be a laughing stock when MOST experts think he would be a great fit here. Come on man, just try to use common sense.

Off the top of my head (just NJ not thinking about PA or NY):

Kiy Hester
Courtel Jenkins
AQM
Olsen from Wayne Hills
Njoku
Jermome Washington

I think one of the biggest logical pitfalls with something like this is "Well, Golden recruited NJ well at UM, so he'd do the same at RU."

Which is just a very bad, very incorrect line of thinking. In a lot of cases Golden didn't recruit those kids, Miami did. The city, the program, the "U" brand. To think that Golden would clean up NJ at Rutgers--I just don't see it at all. His reputation is nothing stellar at this point, nor is Rutgers with in-state/local kids. When you take a guy who knows NJ and put him at a sexy school like Miami, he can recruit NJ well. But to think that after that same guy was run out of town that he can come to RU and recruit all of the NJ 4 star talent to stay home? There's no way.

Fair enough but he will do as well as Schiano would

People that threatened to cancel season tickets if Flood wasnt fired already threatening to cancel season tickets if they dont like the hire

Priceless
I threatened to drop at least 8 tickets. I got what I wanted I will keep all of them regardless of the hire.

I agree 100% Scourge. They speak about Golden as if he never accomplished anything. So what, he lost badly to a Clemson team that might play in a NC game. Listen, is he my first choice, no but that's a stretch to being the laughing stock of college football.

I agree with you but a) my post was a response to someone criticizing him for not recruiting NJ during his time at NJ. He did and b) he has recruited this area well for other schools already

I'm not saying Golden is good or bad for RU, but I am saying that discounting a coach because he was fired (thrown away) by a greater program is crazy. Les Miles was almost in that position, and almost any program would take him. You can say Harbaugh at Michigan fits that mold (SF ran him out of town). Many many other coaches fit this mold as well. Also in the case of Miami, that school is the poster child for craziness. If there is an issue with Golden and Miami, given all the crap that goes on there, some will say well it's Miami, they're crazy down there. I don't think he will have much of a stigma.

If you cannot see the difference between Les Miles, Richt and Harbaugh and Al Golden, I don't know what to tell you. The accomplishments of these coaches is not in the same galaxy.

He was there more than 4 years. This season was his 5th year at Miami.

He recruited Duke Johnson. Either way, I don't see how it matters. He had 6 extremely talented upperclassmen and couldn't even get to .500 in the weak ACC coastal. That team folded like a cheap suit after they lost to FSU. How did "his" recruits respond this year? Lost to Cincinnati's backup QB, lost to FSU for the 4th straight time, and lost to Clemson at home by about 60. In 4 seasons he failed to beat a single team that finished the season in the top 25. This is at MIAMI. I feel like he needs to go back to being an assistant before he gets another look anywhere.

Le
Proof please or are you just taking political pot shots?

Let's not make this political, but whether you like Ted Cruz or not it is very, very obvious why some are firmly in the "not" camp. Now back to whining about possible football coaches ...

well, well so, guess Mark Richt is on your "Undesirable" list

Golden and Richt are not comparable. I'm sure several others have pointed this out.

Mark Richt was very successful at Georgia, though, and was canned in part because fans got tired of him not reaching National Championship level. Al Golden was not at all successful at Miami. Fans there also want NC level play but he didn't get to conference championship level play.

Al Golden will run a clean program which probably appeals to Barchi. The fans will be done with him in about 3 years. History tends to repeat itself.

Cabbage, read what I'm saying without your spin. I'm not saying a thing about Golden's fit at RU or his capabilities. What I am saying that you can't discount a coach simply because a team like Miami fires him. If that were the case a whole lot of good coaches that have found success after being fired, would never get that chance. Folks can offer all sorts of reasons to discount Golden, I just think the fact that Miami fired him is not a very good one as the OP suggested.

Too much hyperbole here. No one knows if Golden or Ash or Warinner would be the better coach.

He led a team with 6 guys drafted in the top 100 to a 6-7 record.

And yet people point to how many players Schiano put in the NFL as a plus, but what exactly did he do with them over his last five years here?

This isn't the only example of people ripping another candidate for something that is very, very similar to Schiano's resume, such as overall record. (Golden .500, Schiano one over, despite both being affected by taking over awful programs)

Our overall athletics program is a laughingstock right now. I think the issues are often overstated, but anything that happens here is tossed on the bonfire of "Rutgers can't get out of its own way" examples.

Golden likely would be a better fit in this part of the country anyway. We could do much, much worse, and it's not likely we could do much better.

I hate to break it to you, but we've been a laughingstock for 2 years. Who do you think we are, Michigan? Ohio State?

We aren't there yet, and a Golden hire would be great.

You guys are nuts! You should pray you have a shot at Golden. He was one of the hottest young coaches in America a few years ago. The guy is one of the few guys that can challenge Franklin in the Northeast for recruits. The NJ HS coaches love Al and that is why he has always been able to recruit the state well. To be honest, he can recruit anywhere and be successful because he is very personable and cuts a professional and dignified figure plus he was properly schooled by Joe Paterno about building a program the right way and focusing on academics as well as athletics in equal amounts. He brought in great classes at BC/UVA and Miami. Imagine Rutgers actually having a coach that CAN RECRUIT! He had to clean up the cesspool that was/is Miami while dealing with crippling sanctions and got a raw deal.

Al is the best coach you will have a shot at. I would be sending flowers and candy to him right now!

No
He was F*ckin DESTROYED

Nice try

The point is to hire a HC who is right for RU and will improve the play and talent. I don't care that Golden was fired by Miami. Almost all coaches get fired at some point. Don't care what the "U" crowd thinks of Golden either..doesn't have anything to do with RU. Stop worrying about what everyone else thinks, worry about who is going to improve the football program.

RU2BNJ nailed it. Exactly what I was thinking. Plus, Miami is a different animal that Golden and other coaches do not fit.

"Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

Sounds like Rutgers Football.

First and foremost, we need someone who can COACH!!!!

Recruiting is 2nd.

We will NEVER out-recruit tOSU or Michigan.
We could get close to and eventually match recruiting by MSU and PSU (but this would take time).

But if we can't COACH that talent, it is useless.

RUTGERS has some talent on the roster now (sure it needs more).
But I think everyone agrees the coaching on whole was poor.
If we had better coaching, we would have had MUCH better showing this year (and would have won more games, Maryland #1 example).

Golden has not shown he can coach (look at all the damn talent he recruited to Miami!). Same as Schiano. With all the guys both schools put in the NFL, both should have had better results.

Pick who you want, but my vote is Mullen, then Ash.

Why settle for a guy who has obvious limitations and a ceiling (Schiano, Golden)?

Take a chance on someone who can be great.
