BigMatt-Bringing Downey here is idiotic!!!! RU wrestling has developed a culture of dedicated athletes living and training the correct way. Just curious how much you know about this kid? I will wait and then respond.
We are doing a tremendous job with good NJ wrestlers...making them into legit NCAA guys. But I want to see us take the next step and start landing stone cold killers like McKenna. We never have had a NC in wrestling, and our recruiting while good, needs to be better. So if we can't start landing the McKennas of the world, I say we bring in AA/NC contenders as grad transfers. Doesn't necessarily have to be Downey, but we need to maybe take calculated risks to move up.

That's why Im on board with bringing Downey as a transfer. If the top wrestlers won't commit here, maybe we have to bend the rules a bit to take the next step up. Roll the dice and see if he can win a NC here.

Who is the Grad Transfer? Patrick Downey is a bad kid, plain and simple. Since you don't know much about him, I will give you his short Bio.
Went to 3 different Highs Schools(not by choice) was declared ineligible his Senior year(by the way spent time in a Baltimore jail for two assault charges). Graduated High School-could not get into most colleges, so spent two years at the OTC in Colorado. Got into Nebraska, was asked to leave. Spent time at JUCO. Got into Iowa State. Been nothing but trouble since he got there. Ever wonder why Iowa State gets high profile recruits but their team STINKS. Cause they have a terrible mix of kids and not the correct culture. Look how many matches he wrestled this year. While his team was wrestling West Virginia(he said he was too injured to wrestle) he was Snowboarding. Read some of his tweets(how the athletic department did not kick him off the team just because of his tweets is another reason why they stink).
You still want him?

Fair enough. But we gotta break through and have someone win a NC within the next couple seasons. Ash is the type of recruit we need to start landing on a regular basis moving forward. Get Glory and groom him as a NC and we are on our way.

Richie Lewis used to be considered a "bad kid" maybe pairing Downey with Lewis here at RU can help Downey turn it around like Richie did

Just surprised at the posters that would want Downey here. You don't want kids like that around your team. And Richie Lewis had no where near the baggage that Downey had. Not even freaking close.

Also, as u guys pointed out, we need to do everything in our power to get Glory to RU just like how we got Glasgow. Depth guys are nice but we need guys with as high a ceiling as possible.

If we were closing out guys like Griffith, and getting guys like Glory, we will be fine. Im just a tad frustrated that our recruiting isn't landing these elite guys when we have a state of the art practice facility coming, have one of the best home mat advantages in the country with a rabid fanbase, and a coaching staff that has proven they can win in the top conference in collegiate wrestling.

Think we'll be just fine without Downey. Hope the young man lands on his feet somehwere. And I don't just mean wrestling wise.

I like how we r all talking bout Downey coming to ru like there's even a big shot of this happening. Anyways, wherever he decides to go he is an AA contender and will need to change his attitude to remain in d1.

At 24 Years old he not going to figure it out by bailing him out once again. Wrestling has only enabled his behavior because there was always someone who was willing to give him another shot.

I touched on this in another thread. The recruits necessary to take the next step to becoming a top 7 or 8 program year in year out will have to be at a higher level, no way around it. We need to pull from the top 3 in NJ, and more from eastern PA, as well as anyone who is elite in NY, DE, MD. I think we have done very well considering the things holding us back.

Now with the RAC atmosphere, roughly 2,500 fans per match and top 5 attendance, the SKWC getting better thanks to donor support, and the new practice facility which is on par with just about anyone, the obstacles are disappearing fast. I think to this point, the practice facility was a little far off to really matter to recruits, but it should matter for the upcoming class, as they will really be using it for their time here.

As far as getting a guy like Downey, I don't know anything about him personally, but if the other posts are true, that is a lot of strikes. Our coaches are very focused on the attitude and work ethic in the room. We are certainly not pursuing some HS guys who look extremely good on paper, because we don't think they have the right work ethic. Its a balancing act... you can take some risks, and the good rubs off on them and they benefit greatly. If you take the wrong risks, or let too many people with issues around the program, the bad rubs off. I trust the coaches completely to make those decisions based on their evaluations, as it certainly seems like they have a really hardworking team and the 2nd chance guys have been working out well.

That's the beautiful thing about our situation geographically. We dont have to venture more than 5 hours in any direction for wrestling recruiting. All we need is to get the vast majority of the cream of the crop from NJ, Philly and the Lehigh Valley in Eastern PA, NY, DE and MD, maybe even get an elite wrestler from New England if one emerges. But no excuses if we dont land Glory...that will be a big time loss on the coaching staff if they can't get him at this point in the program.

I believe RU is getting the exact kids they need. Look at the development of Van Brill and Pagano. I think the staff is doing a great job at looking at prospects that they believe will be better in college then HS. You definitely need to keep getting top 50 guys and also need to start getting more kids from the Midwest.

We need to get 3 or more of the elite Ashnault type of recruits every year, if we want to be a top 5 program & contend on Saturday of nationals.

I wouldn't go that far. You can never demand a kid of his level in any sport, especially when they are coming from an elite private school. He is going to have many, many options. Let's see where he winds up before blaming the staff.

Now, if he winds up at a Maryland or Michigan State (assuming no personal connection to either school) you can fairly look at the staff and ask how could they not sell him on Rutgers. But if he winds up at Harvard or Ok. State or something like that, you have to just move on to the next one.

Patience grasshopper.... We are not at a NC or bust situation... This program hasn't even scratched the surface of its potential yet... But it will take time to get there.. Each year, more and more resources are available, and being put to good use to help this program keep growing... Just remember, it was only 10 years ago that this program was on the chopping block...Now it's in the upper half of the B1G... The Mecca of college wrestling... Let's not panic and cry about where we need to get to... Let's trust the coaches and enjoy the ride cuz bigger things are coming!!

2016 recruiting class:

InterMat Recruiting Class Rankings

1. North Carolina State
2. Penn State
3. Iowa State
4. Iowa
5. Lehigh
6. Nebraska
7. Purdue
8. Minnesota
9. Rutgers
10. Ohio State
11. Stanford
12. Cornell

2017- #3-5 Nationally ranked Stephan Glasgow at 152. Nationally ranked Robinson (Blair ) following year. Getting Glory would be a terrific pick up. Metzler & Janzer ranked in the teens. I got a feeling there will be a couple more nice ranked surprises.

And all this With an ancient wresting room at the Barn that can't hold the entire team at the whole time, and a new facility probably 2-3 years away.

I'm not sure Downey is worth the scholarship money for most D1 teams that are out recruiting guys for 4 and 5 year commitments. I'm thinking he ends up at place like Lock Haven, or else just focuses on freestyle.

he's a great wrestler and I love watching him wrestle but the collegiate environment may not be the best fit for Downey.

I wouldn't mind seeing Goodale offering a transfer opportunity for Firestone to RU, maybe at 133 for depth. The Van Brills know him and would endorse it.

I was thinking more Eric Chakonis, top NJ 285 now, and ranked in top 20 nationally, is committed to Bucknell. Maybe he is having second thoughts ?

Anytime a press release ends in "We will not be commenting further," the first thing I do as a local reporter is file a freedom of information request and figure out what the suspension is for. Haha.

It sounds like the young man got a quick study in business, law, ethics, and self management all at one time. Hopefully, he will move on and succeed in academics and wrestling, in that order. $$$$

I don't think freedom of information requests apply to private universities. FOIA is for governments and assorted agencies.

In other news, NY now has 2 RTCs, as Cornell's FLWC is now the NY RTC & Columbia & The Edge Hoboken partnered to form NYC RTC (Olympic champ Kendall Cross joined Columbia as the coach for the NYC RTC):

EIWA Tourney starts today if anyone is interested.
Word is Jordan Kutler the #1 seed (157) for Lehigh either didn't make weight or didn't weigh in. He had been injured and hadn't wrestled in over a month.

I was just looking at flo's hs wrestling rankings for 170 and realized Janzer is going to be ranked as high as top 3 in his weight class once the seniors clear out next year. He has a good shot at becoming a 2x nj champ and join many of the Delsea greats. I feel like his stock is going to really rise his sr year, much like McFadden's did, and Janzer will become an AA just like Donnie fisch did.

Nice work finding Janzer as far as the coaching staff goes. Janzer is a 2018 kid right? How many more open spots do we have for that year?
