Post Mortem by Lion - Delayed, RU vs MSU

Doubtful it is guesswork. Pike and staff decided 4 games ago that Dylan Grant should be the starter . Pike came to that conclusion slowly because his stubbornness thinking MARTINI was going to somehow help us. He has helped us in 1 game , Nebraska. He has been close to terrible with multiple games of 0 points , 0 offensive or defensive rebounds, 0 steals , 0 assists and of course 1-2 turnovers . The horrendous shooting from him , PJ and Acuff has torpedoed a number of games and turned wins into losses.
Obvious to anyone MSU was very athletic and Grant had the best chance against them as compared to Martini. Just an awful mistake.
It's one game and Grant had been just as worthless to that point though. All I'm saying. I hated the Martini pick up, you don't have to tell me how little he's added, he's been worse than I was even expecting.

Question that HAD to be asked to Pike…

I eluded to it earlier in the week that if D Harp wasn’t ready he should NOT have played since the season is on the brink. Instead of trying to rush back and practice on Thur / Friday wouldn’t it have made more sense to continue PT so he is ready for NW???

F the Garden and the fact the kid wants to try. What kid wouldn’t? He was limping in shoot around. Now way he should have played. Sounds like he was in bad shape after practice on Friday. Knowing that I see it as a huge mistake to risk delaying him for even more games.

Now if he’s 90-100% for NW OK no harm but I can’t see that being the case now that he went hard on it in practice and the game.

We can’t win games without him. Maybe can steal one here or there but we need to win 3/4 games in a row to get back in the picture and him playing looks to have really hurt our chances vs NW assuming he won’t play or be greater than 90% if he tries.

Bigger picture should have been looked at.

Program issues start with recruting and player renention …..

I don't want another offseason of adding 9 or 10 players. I would rather retain Derkack, Ogbole, and either JWill OR JMike (and Sommerville, Grant, and Dortch) just to have some continuity and guys that know the system, if they're willing to accept supporting roles. Note I said JWill "OR" JMike -- I don't think we need or want both.

Add the four freshmen for 2025 (Mark, Powers, Nwuli, and Ware), so that would be 10 guys.

But we ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, must add the following portal players:
  1. A starting PG -- not willing to bank on Lino Mark or JWill as my starting PG next year.
  2. A starting 2G
  3. A starting-caliber WF -- a 6-5 to 6-7 guard/wing who can do everything
  4. A rugged PF/C who can rebound and play defense and get putbacks.
The lineup next year should look like this:

1 - PORTAL#1, Mark (JWill OR JMike)
2 - PORTAL#2, Derkack, Powers
3 - PORTAL#3, Nwuli
4 - Grant (30 minutes), PORTAL#4, Dortch
5 - Sommerville, PORTAL#4, Ware, Ogbole
i doubt the lineup will come close to 70 points.

OT: Sonoma State Dropping All Sports

Not sure I want to do a deep dive on this, but this appears to be an issue specific to Sonoma State and not to the California State University System. SSU had two high-profile resignations recently and attendance is way down in recent years. The issues surrounding these presidents have smothered the university in bad news and now the stink has gotten much, much worse.

I’m not knowledgeable enough to say what’s needed next, but it seems the CSU administrators ought to either take over operations. The next president has to have the ability to raise morale of the students, faculty and staff.

You are pretty much in agreement but do not think JWill or JMike are needed as they have shown absolutely no improvement this year , when they have been counted on , and arguably have gotten worse. Cannot afford their bad play next year and start fresh with Jordan and Mark in the backcourt with 2 portal impact guards.

Should Schiano lighten up on the Cultural match ?

this thread / OP proves: it’s the off-season ;)

But as it’s not a ridiculous question I’ll weigh in….

OP - imho I think your post is a few years too late.

When Schiano 2.0 started (and we had NO talent/ depth) it would have been a very good question to ask whether he should roll the dice with some talented / but questionable kids to bolster the roster.

But now he really does seem to have a plan/ system in place to build up the roster in a long term/ sustainable way

I suppose your question is whether he should alter that to speed it up.

Again , not an absurd question imho.

But I think you’re getting an overwhelmingly consistent response to your question - seems the rest of us are happy to see where Schiano is gonna take this with the system he is employing.

maybe, just maybe, this approach will eventually result in Rutgers having a solid/ deep program.

As of right now there doesn’t seem to be a reason to doubt what Schiano is doing

we ALL wish it would happen overnight but seems those responding to your question (including me) see the direction he’s going and are willing to have a little more patience - it’s what Rutgers fans excel at ;)
It's funny- we all watched the first couple of years of GS 2.0 and even his biggest fans were kind of saying- Can he do it? A couple of years later- NIL happened, recruiting on a whole was still not where we wanted it. The team looked better and we saw a slight glimmer but, we were losing the NIL battle. Greg called us developmental and that he was going to spend his limited NIL on retention rather than portal and recruiting.
The NIL equation looked like it may make us linger for decades of being blah.

Then, either he figured it out or he had it right. And of course, we were all of a sudden swimming with the $20 mil money. Greg's recruiting has started to step up, product on the field looks much better- bringing in a top portal class while not losing the kids we want to stay.
It feels that we may have just climbed to the top of the hill and we may see things escalate very quickly from here. It feels like we were just chugging and would never get there but now it seems the next couple of steps forward, go faster then we ever imagined.

Pacheco NFL Firsts

no brainer.. not rooting for the Philly Pigeons... so hoping KC makes it 3 in row.
..but for Pacheco being injured and not used like he was in the past, think they will move on and avoid paying him more in future. That being said, I hope he winds up with the GIANTS and bring the prodigal son home to NJ. Can always hope, right?
he grew up in Vineland, home would be the Eagles for him

It's all guesswork. Grant had 5 boards in 23 minutes, Martini 2 in ten, pretty much the same rate. That three made Grant 1-6 on the game though.
I do agree that Pike has a weird habit of sitting guys after a made shot. I don't know if its to send them to the bench after a positive or what the thinking is.

Chris Ash to Notre Dame…done deal

Ash was a bust as a HC, but his DC skills made him look like he might be HC material and Rutgers took the chance.
Chris failed miserably and went to Texas as an analyst them moved up to the DC position.
The Texas D under him didn't compare to his time as the Buckeyes and he didn't return to the Longhorns the next season .
Ash hasn't been a DC since and I wonder why he's being considered ( if not hired already) instead of Freeman moving his DB Coach Mickens into the job.
Mike Mickens is considered an up and comer and destined to be a DC soon.
Ash has the DC position on his resume and had good Ds at OSU & Wisconsin
But as the Texas DC in 2020 his D was ranked #64 in total defense and he was gone the next season

In 2013, Chris Ash coached the secondary and served as the defensive coordinator for the Arkansas Razorbacks. During his one season with the Razorbacks, Arkansas' defense ranked #89 in total defense

OT: Sonoma State Dropping All Sports

My wife and son are both SSU grads. Not only did they drop all sports, some academic programs were also dropped, including my son’s major (Art History). The situation sucks, and it seems that SSU is a poorly run institution. I hope the university gets it act together soon.

FWIW, if anyone happens to vacation in Nor Cal, the Green Center is a truly great concert venue - especially sitting outside on the grass.

One other note, Sonoma State is similar to my undergrad school - Ramapo College.
