OT: Billy Joel, Rod Stewart to perform one-night-only show at Yankee Stadium

Guess I'm officially old and crotchety af, but I do not understand for the life of me why those vids are such a big thing.

I've accidentally clicked 'em before when just looking to play a song, and I just scratch my head wondering why anyone would want to spend their time watching some rando listen to music.

Goes right in the over-the-top self-indulgence bucket along with all the other "I did some basic everyday thing ... here's what happened!" cool stories. Don't care, douche!

Ok, I'm good now.
Pretty simple. Same mechanism as taking a child to an amusement park.. or a significant other to someplace they never have been but you have.. you see it anew.. experience it anew.. through them.

There's a related series of YouTubers doing videos of various types of neophytes experiencing various foods.

- an Italian eats Carrabas or Olive Garden or pizza chains

- English schoolboys eat Wendys.. or English father tries Southern biscuits and gravy

- Afghan tribal elders try American steakhouse

etc etc

OT: DEVASTATING WILDFIRE ….Santa Monica/Palisades fire being aided by 50-80mph Santa Ana winds. 100mph possible overnight

Agree on the first paragraph completely, but not the second, where you're already making assumptions of what went wrong before looking at the data - typical confirmation bias (and I'm not saying politicians don't make mistakes, but let's get the data and analyze the actual impacts first). I've done it too, in this thread, where my personal working assumption is that the biggest issue is not having the ability to fly at the very start of the wildfires in very high winds. That might be wrong.
I get it, but from my experience, professionals acknowledge and accept flaws in planning and will even second guess their decisions, politicians not so much.

Screw it, just build a new arena

Love you nuts, but nobody gives a shit about it when it’s working out, its only a talking point when things aren’t going as planned

We don’t get Ace or Dylan without it

And if we actually had a competent coaching staff (I’ve been very supportive of Pike, but this year is completely unacceptable on every imaginable metric ) and supporting cast to make a deep run into the NCAA, literally nobody would care about NIL
All good man, and I get it, but MOST people I speak can not stand NIL/portal AS they are currently setup. The original intent of NIL has been blown up in smoke as this is nothing whatsoever but "pay-for-play." I don't know anybody who had/has any issue with "NIL" itself, as intented.

RAPID REACTION — Purdue

Agree except for the “if Painter coaches” part. Purdue recruits an entirely different type of player: they all pass, shoot well, find open players and make each other better. Basketball Fundamentals.

Pike recruits athletes and length. Our guys have different skills and wouldn’t be capable of the Purdue offense. Fundamentals and team play not a roster construction consideration.

We have always been an iso ‘make a play’ offense because the players don’t have the other abilities.

So no, Painter wouldn’t change the skills our players have.
Would our players improve with a real offense? I think he'd have them playing smarter and possibly be able to sneak them into the tourney. The more I watch our supporting cast struggle, the more I think there is no coach that could get this team to the tourney this year.

If my life depended on RU making the tourney, Painter is a coach that would have me believing that I might make it out alive.

Screw it, just build a new arena

So much wrong with this thread. Build a cavern arena and end up like Penn State, zero atmosphere and a long forgotten program. Even in our worst years over 30 NCAA misses at least we got some fun upsets thanks to the RAC. The team cannot generate 2 consecutive stops, that’s why the RAC was quiet. It’s the players, arena has nothing to do with it
OSU too. They yearn for old arena.

Short term fixes to our long term basketball abyss

its sad, everyone always said things would be different when we got to the Big East...then the same things when we got to the Big 10...oh fans are going to flock to football teams to see the big name schools..blah blah blah

you know what its all bullshit selling based on blind loyalty and blind faith and homerism

WINNING MATTERS...period. RU is getting more money but so what..our peers get the same and more and they know how to do it effectively

we still have fans that think playing a home conference game at msg is somehow this incredible press for Rutgers for the nation to see...wtf..no one gives a shit..they care about teams that win, not lose with nba top 5 picks.

i would rather be in the acc for football because the wins could come easier. I would rather be in the Big East for hoops because it just makes more sense.

We all loved Pike on the build up..once we got there it didnt sustain itself and unfortunately RU got absolutely ****ed up the ass by covid which took all the glory and all the fun out of our first appearance in 30 years with a cancelled tourney and then almost no fans allowed at the next tourney, then we make it and have to play in Dayton as the last 4 in

Our highs were enormous for this program but just a blip on the radar screen and now 3 years and its a clear bell curve downward. Our shitty AD handed out extenstion to every single coach while banging the gymsnastic coach and got away with it like Slick Willie
I agree with you on everything except rather being in the ACC. I’d rather have the much more money that we are getting from the B1G. Rutgers has a way of sinking to bottom of whatever league we are in, so we might as well be in one of the best. Of course, when you have incompetent ADs, coaches and presidents who have no idea how to use it, it doesn’t matter much. You have to invest to make money. Sitting here with a lame duck coach and an albatross of a contract time and time again is not a recipe for success. We never know when to cut our loses and make smart decisions.

The bar is so low that we glorify mediocrity.

Not really.

Talking about what can be done in the future is an important part of this. And finding out what when right or wrong, along who did what and when/why is too.

There is an adult way of doing that. We call it a critique in my profession. Usually happens pretty soon right after the event. More in-depth conversation/study happens later.
Not sure where my reply went but I’ll try again

I don’t disagree that anyone and everything responsible should be held accountable after a thorough and thoughtful review. Are critiques done by the interweb usually considered as valuable and helpful as the ones done by people actually working the fire?

Seems that what observers can do more productively now is support victims and firefighters.

btw my brother is another Cook grad who spent a few seasons on fires out west and around the country. I was visiting near a fire this summer days after a pilot died crashing on a water pickup. Tragic. In the days that followed at least 4 planes and helicopters kept circling on water drops. Kudos who all who take all these risks working to keep others safe.

25/26 Rutgers Hoops

With this season completely off the rails and no signs of hope, I was looking ahead to next season. Given the roster will have with some legitimate YOUNG talent what do we need from the portal to make the team competitive? Obviously expectations will be super low so it will be hard to match the disappointment of this season.

Assuming no transfers out this is what the roster will look like:

PG: Davis, Williams?, Mark
2/3: Derkack, Powers, Ware
4/5: Ogbole, Somerville, Grant, Ware, Nwuli

I think it's time to move on from Williams, Ogbole and maybe even Derkack.

We need from the portal, an experienced floor general, a rim protector and a shooter/scorer on the wing. What is the probability we can get those?

Ultimately, Pike needs to keep the young guys in the program and get back to his roots of developing tough hard nosed defense first players. We need to be a "developmental" program ala GS' football mantra and the teams of Baker, Harper, McConnell if Pike is going to have any success. Is that possible in the age of NIL and the portal? No clue, but I think it's our only hope.

RAPID REACTION — Purdue

G-RUnit,

Simpson is not a B1G player. He is shooting 37% in the A10 as the 4th option. Excellent foul shooter and very good defender. Can't finish when he drives and is terrible in the midrange.

Nobody was clamoring for Davis to stay. I think most were likely ok if both had left. Davis is worse than Simpson. I think everyone knows that.
The point being is he most certainly was a B1G defender, something we truly lack.
The point being he was most certainly was a B1G foul shooter something we truly lack.
The point being he most certainly was a B1G ball handler which we truly lack, JWill falling down 2x a game?
Criticism of his shooting percentage seems quaint given JMike, Derkack PJ and Martini.
Some posters have said JMike is improving?
And sure B1G is a higher level than the A10 but it’s not chopped liver either.
Experience through the rigors of the B1G nice to have too.

Short term fixes to our long term basketball abyss

I think In 10 years we are going to want to fire a coach that elevated this program to a level where we get the #2 and #3 recruit in the country because we couldn't win with those players.

Can you imagine how funny that would have been posting

Incomplete guards are the issue

In the NBA. He'll play 25mpg next year as a reserve.
He won't be asked to carry the team and do everything like here.

He will play with better complementary players and better coaches than college.
Exactly what you proposed.
Better complimentary players OK. Better coaches, nope. Very few of them are ever successful coaching in the college ranks where way more actual coaching takes place, except in Rutgers case.
