Where things went wrong offensively vs Nebraska...

Nebraska was getting a ton of penetration behind the LOS on run plays. Early in the game Kyle Monangai was able to make a lot of play essentially on this own by making guys miss at or behind the LOS on his runs in the 1st quarter, but as the game wore on the Nebraska DL proved to outmatch our banged up OL. Early in the game they did a good job running away from the interior run blitzes but Nebraska mad good adjustments and shut our running game down.

Rushing after a good 1st Q (excluding sack yardage):
  • 1st Q rushing: 10/70 (7.0 ypc)
  • Rest of game: 21/44 (2.1 ypc)
  • When down 14: 13/27 (2.1 ypc)
We talked about what might happen when Rutgers played from behind and in short, they fell apart. They went from a 39% play action rate the first 4 games of the season to an 11% play action rate against Nebraska. Athan is very comfortable running play action as I previously posted about, for those who missed those splits on the season and against Nebraska...

Season splits:
Play action (30.9% of dropbacks): 30/42 (71.4%) for 415 yards, 4 TDs & 0 INTs (1 sack)
No play action (69.1% of dbs): 44/91 (48.4%) for 532 yards, 4 TDs & 3 INTs (7 sacks)

Nebraska splits:
Play action (11.4% of dropbacks): 5/5 (100%) for 43 yards, 0 TDs & 0 INTs (0 sacks)
No play action (88.6% of dbs): 10/32(31.3%) for 143 yards, 1 TD & 2 INTs (4 sacks)

We also regularly got off-schedule against Nebraska, which was a first for us all season. Here are our 1st down splits on the season:
  • 1st down run/pass splits
    • Nebraska
      • 14 Passing (53.8%): 5/13 (38.4%) for 57 yards (one defensive holding as well)
      • 12 Rushing (46.2%): 12 rushes for 31 yards (2.58 ypc)
    • 1st 4 games
      • 46 Passing (34.6%): 29/46 (63%) for 352 yards
      • 87 Rushing (65.4%): 87 carries for 547 yards (6.29)
We got down 14 and the offense pressed too much in my opinion. They got away from what they've been successful doing the first four games and it threw off the entire balance of the offense. Rutgers was very good at staying ahead of schedule (especially setting up manageable 3rd downs) most of the season. They were 3rd in the FBS in average yards to go on 3rd down prior to this game:
  • Rutgers offense average 3rd down distance
    • First 4 games: 3rd and 5.3
    • Against Nebraska: 3rd and 7.2
      • 1st Q: 3rd and 3.7
      • Rest of game : 3rd and 8.0
After the 1st quarter, 3rd downs became unruly and put us into much longer situations than the offense could handle.

Some additional notes:

Offensive Line
  • False starts killed us. Penalties on OL: 3. The team as a whole had 4 total (the other penalty was the BS call on Dino Kaliakmanis)
  • KM really had to make a lot out of nothing in the running game. Most runs he was met at or behind los
  • OL was a problem, allowed far too many pressures. We need more safety valves in the passing game if OL continues to play this poorly

Passing game
  • Kaliakmanis made too many risky throws across his body
  • Split zone bluff was sniffed out every time (aka the Kenny Fletcher play)
  • Chris long was thrown far too many contested passes. He had 5 targets in traffic and caught just one. He's not good at it, let's stop targeting him in these situations

Overall the rest of the team took a step forward, but the offense took a step back. Nebraska likely has the best home environment and best front 7 that we will face all season. But losing Bryan Felter was a huge blow. Taj White and Dante Chin both struggled mightily replacing him, and Kobe Asamoah and Tyler Needham also struggled big time Saturday. Additionally, Kenny Fletcher was getting abused both in pass blocking and run blocking. We really need to clean up our OL because their poor play really stifled the offense Saturday, along with some really bad play-calling.

Gavin Sidwar CRUSHING it this season...

2026 QB commit Gavin Sidwar is having one hell of a junior season. He's led his Lasalle squad to an undefeated 7-0 season so far this year and MaxPreps has Lasalle ranked as the #1 football team in PA. So far here are his stats on the year:

148/209 (70.8%) for 1,722 yards and 22 TDs

His schedule might be the toughest in PA as well. So far he's faced the #2 team in the state (Malvern Prep, won 21-17), the #4 team in the state (St Joe's Prep, won 35-34), the #8 team in Maryland (Calvert Hall, won 28-10) and the #13 team in PA (Harrisburg, won 45-7). He also will face the #8 team in PA (Roman Catholic) at the end of this month.

Love this kid's game, Rutgers got a stud.

Project Rudy---a new Super League concept looms that could radically alter college sports

Oh boy--private capital --this may not end well.

"Project Rudy is built on two somewhat simple concepts to increase revenue from television networks and corporate sponsors.

(1) Arrange more games between power conference programs by eliminating all games against Group of Five and FCS opponents; expanding the playoffs; and pitting blue-blood powers more often against one another.

(2) Consolidate the media rights of the 70 schools under one agreement, instead of the current structure of five different packages (one for each power league and Notre Dame)."

The Good... and Not So Good (Nebraska)

The Good:
  1. Punt blocks: An RU identity. Lets keep the throttle down going forward 9 out of 10 x.
  2. 2nd half D. Best it's been all year. Neb got a little conservative, but D did what was needed. Love to see this be the game that turned on the light for the D.
  3. Ben Black as a weapon. Yes there was one miss, but he was beating coverage. EVERY game needs at least one go route. AND for csake, he is the guy to do ko return-no debate., unless its run out the game time.
  4. KM first half-ran great. Gave up on run calls or at least play action to him.
  5. Dremel punt return--not half bad and took advantage of open field. Fine with bringing the house on punt block and telling Dremel ONLY return if no one for 5 plus yards.
  6. The fight till the end and giving chance to tie/win.
Not so good:
  1. Right side of o line-same as every game.
  2. This time left side too, with White struggling.
  3. Fletcher blocking still an issue. A little improvement would make a big difference.
  4. Kick returns. Forget risk/reward talk. If no one within 1 yards and inside the field of play, gotta try to get plus 25 yrd line.
  5. Easy to read play calls. Anyone watching even a modicum of film can see the Fletcher roll out coming or the Miller in motion out, or the for 2 years rb and qb run to the line and make like its a changed play but its a handoff move. REALLY have some weapons (Black Long Miller strong Duff--wheres Brantly btw?) and need to not do the obvious. More screens to Strong, go routes to Balck and everything to Miller.
  6. No play action-been discussed at length.
  7. Patel--the 52 yrder was on track and wind blew it out and wont blame him but confidence seems shaky. Hopefully a few makes will get it back.
  8. Not fielding punt and flipping field.

As expected, more not so than goods this week.

Schiano's excuse

His excuse for not calling a T.O. to force a review of that TD was bc the ref told him 'they watched it and it wasn't a touchdown.'
But please help me understand what exactly he expected the ref to say in that situation:

"Yes coach, it was a touchdown and I missed it, but you should definitely challenge the spot."
"Yes, it was actually a touchdown, but don't challenge it."
"It was a touchdown, but my mission is to screw you on the spot, so definitely don't challenge it"

Someone please make it make sense.
The next play was run with like 15 seconds on the play clock bc we - for reasons unknown to mankind - decided to run hurry-up offense instead of taking our time. There was zero chance the booth got to review that play within 20 seconds and then relay the result back down to that ref for him to be able to make that qualified statement. A HC has to know that in the heat of the moment.
Schiano got got and that's squarely on him.

Kevin Willard Makes Telling Comments About his Adjustments per the Transfer Portal

Kevin Willard recently talked about adjustments he's making to how he runs his basketball program, in order to adapt to life with the transfer portal. I'm sure he's only giving voice to concerns that most other coaches have.

He said that he will never take any more than three freshmen a year anymore. His reasoning was that freshmen have to be paid for, just like everybody else, even though they've never shown that they will contribute. And if they do contribute, they're likely to move on for a bigger paycheck anyway. In his view, the best bet nowadays is to comb the portal list for proven value.

There was a lot more to it than that, but that was the part that really stuck with me.

"We won't take any more than three freshmen a year. And everyone says, 'Well, why?' I tell them, you have to pay freshmen. They haven't scored a bucket for you. They're unproven, as good as they are and I think I have one of the best freshmen in the country. [But] they still haven't scored for you. So you're going to go out there and you're going to have to commit money to them and then at the end of the year, really, they're all going to transfer because it's the only way for them to find out what their true value is, is to go in the portal," he said.
.
.
.
" I thought I was going to build Maryland with three or four freshman classes. And get those guys better. And then that's just not the way it is anymore. "
