Traveling Call

I have been involved in basketball for nearly 60 years and I don't think that I've seen that call more than 2 or 3 times in all those years.
In my nearly four decades as an official I don't think that I've ever made that call.
At that point in the game that's an official who just wants to show everyone that he knows one of the most obscure rules.

Mt. Edey: To double or not to double, that is the question

The question isn’t whether to start our third string center to avoid Cliff getting in foul trouble, but whether to employ the “no doubling” strategy we employed last year against Edey and Trevion Williams.

The rationale for this strategy is to “allow” Purdue to score 2s while guarding the perimeter and not allowing them to “go off” from 3-Pt range. It worked pretty well last year in the game at the RAC, as Edey/Williams scored 34 of Purdue’s 68 points but the Boilermakers only shot 7-26 from 3-Pt range.

But Purdue is only shooting about 30 percent from deep this year, and Edey is absolutely dominating their offense. So perhaps we mix up the strategy a bit.

The first thing is utilizing a full court press from time to time, and even when not full court pressing, utilizing a 3/4 court press just to burn 10-12 seconds and delay their half court sets.

The second thing is to guard their ballhandlers up tight to make it more difficult to make entry passes to the post. Combined with this, I’d like to see Cliff FRONT Edey. With our tight perimeter on-ball defense and Cliff fronting Edey, it will be difficult for Purdue to make lob passes to him.

But if Edey gets the ball on the block with Cliff behind him, to double or not to double?

Last year at the RAC, we almost exclusively did NOT double. I think this year, at Mackey (where you’d think Purdue could get more comfortable shooting from deep), we should continue this strategy, but with how much Edey dominates, I think we need to mix it up.

Our guards are very good at sagging and digging down without fouling, but our rotations will need to be quick and aggressive so that we don’t give too many open threes.

So, what say you?

If Rutgers had 6 players on the court and scored the winning basket, R U telling me that the refs who made no call wouldn't be sanctioned...and reversed?

If Rutgers sank the winning basket 1 second after official time had expired R U telling me that the refs,, opposing coach / fans wouldn't be clamoring for an intervention and be recersed....during real time or after the fact?

We live in a era of NIL $$$$ and sports betting. The B!G is trying to land UCLA with its 10+ Basketball championships: WAKE UP AND CORRECT THE F" UP!

It was the last play that decided the outcome. Given that there may not have been any tijme to make the final basket and even if there was time, there was a clear rule violation....CORRECTthe filnal sore : .

PS Who is the director of NCAA referee's? Whoever made the no call should be shown the tape and asked why? Wes there a NIL deal or bet on OSU?

Killer Cam

I wish I knew how to post a screen grab, but for those of you who haven't rewatched the game 10 times so far, check out Cam in the huddle after he hit the shot and Purdue called timeout. Looked like a psycho killer yelling "One more stop!!" while Pikiell was actually still talking. Great.

Joining a team with guys like Caleb and Paul who have been through the wars at RU and are strong personalities, I thought Cam had been hesitant to fully unleash himself offensively so far this year. He has taken what he has been given but also passed up some shots that I'd like a sharpshooter to take. This was his coming out party and he proved to everyone what he can do. This is a great development - for an offensively challenged team, he is hugely important to take care of business the rest of the way.

Significant college trends

Today's Axios news letter summarizes some recent stories about trends in college applications. While none of it is Rutgers-specific, many of the items can be expected to affect Rutgers: For any who don't know, HBCUs are historically black colleges and universities.

Several trends are colliding to change what colleges are offering, and how they interact with students:
  • Enrollment is down, longstanding traditions are crumbling and applicant pools are changing dramatically.
Why it matters: We're starting to see how higher education will emerge from the dizzying disruption of the pandemic, Axios' Erin Doherty and Erica Pandey write.
What's happening: The total number of undergraduate students in the U.S. dropped by nearly 10% during the pandemic, PBS NewsHour reports.
  • The number of colleges closing over the last 10 years quadrupled compared with the prior decade, per The Wall Street Journal (subscription).
State of play: The demographics of college students have also shifted.
  • Underrepresented minority applicants increased by 32% and first-generation applications jumped 43% from 2019 to 2020, per Common App data out last month.
  • Hispanic enrollment at four-year institutions is up a whopping 287% between 2000 and 2020, reaching an all-time high, according to Pew Research Center.
  • Women are outnumbering men in higher education. There are about 130 women for every 100 men at four-year colleges, and the gap is even wider at two-year institutions, the St. Louis Fed notes.
What to watch: One group of institutions bucking the dropping enrollment trend are HBCUs. Applications to top-tier HBCUs jumped as much as 30% between 2018 and 2021, per PBS NewsHour.

FB Recruiting Two prospects set to take Rutgers official visits

After speaking with two of the Scarlet Knights most recent offers, TKR has confirmed that 2023 Virginia TE/OL Nader Chichi and OT Nick Oliveira will both be taking an official visit to Rutgers on the weekend of Dec. 16th, this would count as the last official visit weekend before National Signing Day on Dec. 21st.

Login to view embedded media Now Chirchi is the more likely of the two as he is very high on the Scarlet Knights and recently stopped by campus for the Penn State game, where he earned the offer from Schiano and staff in person. I'm very close to putting in a futurecast in favor of the Scarlet Knights.

Login to view embedded media As for Oliveira, he is a long time Cincuinatti commit out of Clearview Regional out of South Jersey. He committed to Cincy back in June, but Rutgers just offered the other day and he immediately scheduled an official visit. Other programs that have offered him since Fickell leaving for Wisconsin include Pittsburgh, Syracuse and West Virginia. I'm quietly liking Rutgers chances more and more here for flip, but not enough for a futurecast just yet.
