Jon Crispin

He was the color announcer last night. He's hard to take for me. Didn't like him saying "bad lineup" (even though he was correct) and even though he knows what he's talking about, it just comes out kind of scattered and difficult to listen to with most of his other comments. Is it just me?

Also, regarding the game: 1) it was tied with 1:30 left - on the road against a good team, just couldn't close it out.
2) Caleb looked good. He was a willing scorer, in addition to playing the PG, and his defense was fine. We'll need him to be a scorer as the season progresses.
3) I'm hoping that Cam settles down. He's probably feeling pressure to score. If he doesn't put up around 15 pts a game, with at least a few 3s, we've got some major concerns.

Overall, I'm still optimistic that we'll be in the top half of the B10.

Telling Stats From Last Night

Shooting Percentage: Miami FG 49.1%; RU 37.3%. Free Throws: Miami 10/12; RU 4/4. Bench Scoring: Miami 6pts; RU 6 pts. But the most telling stat of all was Cam Spencer shooting only 1-10 from the field, no FTs and scoring a total of 3 points. And he is suppose to make up in large part for the great scoring loss caused by the Harper & Baker departures. If Cam continues to underperform to this extent as the competition level increases, our season is doomed; PM or no PM.

ESPN U / Mohegan Sun Production

Awful.
Really makes it even more excruciating to watch a rough game when the mics and audio are all out of sync. The quiet game calling with the super loud buzzers and extra loud commercials really made my skin crawl. ACC network is also terrible.
I might be spoiled as most B1G network games are good TV, but someone should get that straightened out.

Hyatt and Mag

I routinely see lots of hate directed at these guys but they are both valuable pieces. Tonight they contributed 20 pts 15 rebounds and a few assists and steals. Yes shooting wasnt great, they had some bad turnovers and they both missed what turned out to be critical open lay ups. But they are also first time starters who are probably rushing things around the basket. I think that will fix itself as the season goes along. They both just need to understand their roles. Mag is very good posting up his defender and getting close shots. Hyatt is strong and can make outside shots and get rebounds in traffic. And lets face it, on a team lacking high powered offensive threats and Spencer playing tight again against quality opponents, without these guys who the hell is going to score some points? Do we expect MocConnell and Cliff to score 40?

Player development

I said it last year at the end of the season that Pike needed to hit the Portal hard because our bench players Hyatt, Mag, Reiber and Miller were not Big 10 calibur players. Turns out I'm right, they are not. Also, I'm glad Cliff worked on his 3pt shot all off season because his defense and rebounding still stink. A kid 4 inches shorter than him out scored him and equaled him in rebounds tonight and the Temple big man had a career night against him.

I’m very upbeat despite tough loss

The offense flowed a lot better tonight than at any time last year. Cliff improved a lot from year 1 to year 2 and he improved more from year 2-3. Caleb had a fantastic game despite just coming back from injury. As much as people kill Mag, he does so much on defensive end and rebounding and that’s severely under looked. They played a very good team on road without PG and fought till end. They easily win if Cam played like he is capable or if Paul played. If both happened, Rutgers wins by double digits
