My guide to fixing the offense in 2023

We need to build around Sam Brown. That's the only returning piece I see on offense and he's still VERY green.

Number 1: Hire a good OC who is also a QB coach (good luck Schiano you have your work cut out here but money is not the problem. You need to overcome your reputation and more importantly change your philosophy completely)

QB - land a JUCO or transfer QB who can clearly be a starter. No scrubs. If you can't land a kid like this then you need to ride with Evan or Noah and let them develop. Also recruit a P5 worthy QB for this recruiting cycle. No scrubs committed to Holy Cross. Either quality at this point or don't offer but better damn well go all in on a stud for 2024.

RB - I am okay with where we're at. Not crazy about the HS kid coming in or Shady and Kyle complimenting Sam but we have bigger problems.

TE - Must land a JUCO or portal TE who can play. Whoever is playing QB needs weapons. Get me a big target. We have a FCS TE right now.

WR - Need 2 of a JUCO or portal WR. Big targets. Move Rochelle to WR and develop him. He's not a RB. Run off some of the upperclassmen WRs who have done nothing in their careers.

OL - Need 1 JUCO or portal guy who can start, the underclassmen aren't there yet. Cut the dead weight who cannot play.

IMO we must get a minimum of 3 impact JUCO or portal starters who can be plugged in at QB, WR or TE. 4 is ideal but assuming we don't have the quality available I see us getting 3.

Last year I said we needed to replace Bo and IPs production or 2022 was going no where. We didn't replace that and I mentally checked out. Let's see what happens...

Flo Has Poz on Redshirt

This is what they posted

184 lbs - Brian Soldano, Rutgers

True freshman Brian Soldano had big shoes to fill in the Rutgers lineup with All-American John Poznanski in redshirt, but the #8 recruit in the class of 2022 appears to be up for the challenge. In three duals this weekend, Soldano was 3-0 with a major, an tech, and a fall. His major came against #18 Will Feldkamp of Clarion, and his tech came against #22 Anthony Montalvo of Arizona State. Soldano isn’t messing around.

The Maryland game is barometer

For the success or lack of success of this season. They smoked us last year at home and hopefully our players remember the way they tore us to pieces and take it personally.

I think the average fan would be ok with a competitive game from start to finish and accept a moral victory but no more slaughters or good halves of football. This is put up or shut up time

Schiano needs to COMPLETELY change his philosophy on offense this off-season...

Schiano has tried to win games the same way for both his tenures (1.0 and 2.0) at Rutgers. Ball control on offense, more run than pass and a stifling/high pressure defense to back up a conservative offense.

It's become clear the game is starting to pass him by on offense. Two of the best coaches in the history of football (Nick Saban and Bill Belichick), have both spoken on how much they've had to change their philosophy of offensive football as rules have changed and as the way the game is played has changed...

Greg needs to adapt his approach and philosophy on offense, or else this program is going to continue to regress. It starts with philosophy/scheme, then it goes to making the right coaching hires, then it goes to recruiting the right players. Greg needs to sort this out in the coming days, then crush the OC/offensive staff hires

Mods questions

Please don’t even waste time asking about plays in the game (Like wtf did Nunz run a sweep on 4th and 1 lol). Please please start hammering two points…

1. Can you hire a big time OC and leave him alone? There are a lot of people connected to the program that fear that it will be tough to attract a good OC as he will think his hands will be tied by your conservative defense first approach.

2. It seems like since Gavin committed u out all ur eggs in one basket by not adding a HS or portal QB in 2 years. With risk of injury and the time needed to mature as a QB it seems like that room needs competition. So do you plan to add a 23’ kid AND a portal QB for quality depth / compete for the starting job???

Word them anyway u think will get Greg to chat a bit but these two questions should be hammered home over and over. Everything else is cake.

Rutgers offense since Nunz took over (spoiler, it's not pretty)

Nunzio Campanile took over as our OC at the midway point of the season, right after the Friday night home debacle against Nebraska. He had a bye week prior to his first game as the OC, so two weeks to prepare for the game against Indiana. Here are Rutgers cumulative stats in those 6 games with Nunz as the OC...

Rushing totals:
193 carries for 558 yards (2.9 yards per carry) and 2 TDs

3rd downs by game:
IU: 5/17 (29.4%)
MIN: 2/10 (20%)
UM: 3/13 (23.1%)
MSU: 8/16 (50%)
PSU: 4/19 (21.1%)
UMD: 1/13 (7.7%)

3rd down totals:
23/88 (26.1%)

As you can see, our offense has been PUTRID since he took over. It's not like we were setting the world on fire before he took over and Gleason was fired mid-season for a reason. But I don't see how you can look at how the offense has performed in the 6 games under his watch and be inspired about the direction he is taking it. If Greg sticks with Nunz, he's making a very very risky decision and he might be facing a fan uprising. Greg has the money to spend $1M+ on an OC should he choose, there will be tons of interested coaches with that kind of money to throw around. He HAS to hit a HR with this OC decision going into a critical 2023 for this program.
