1979 Rutgers-Ohio State MSG Triple OT

I would have been there, but was on the Rutgers Prep team that upset Roy Hinson's Franklin team that night in the County Final. I remember listening to the overtimes in the car on the way to Patti's (now Olive Branch) to celebrate. Classic radio broadcast, although I remember announcer keeping you in suspense on that last shot by Anderson..

I was there and remember it was very late, maybe after midnight before the game finished. It was part of a double header (the consolation game was Duke vs St Johns) and some people were leaving during the second game. I managed to sneak down to some courtside seats right near the basket and got to see upclose James Bailey's heroics that night.

That game was one of the 5 best RU basketball games I have ever attended. I think Ransey scored 38 points, Herb Williams scored 26 points and Bailey had 32 points, maybe?

The Ebay description implies Bailey dunked to win the game - I suppose the video would not lie, but I could have sworn it was a Bailey 10-12 foot baseline jumper with 8 to 10 seconds left ... maybe that was to put the game into one of the OT's.

Jelly

The dunk win it in the third overtime

Awesome game....i was right under the baseline with my dad and saw the basket steal and basket in the last 10 seconds of one of the over tones that forced another over time

I too was at the game. It was the most amazing RU game I have ever seen. Abdel Anderson made two amazing steals with his long arms at the end of one of the stanzas, The Garden was rocking like crazy.

I see somebody has already purchased the DVD this morning off ebay. Hope it was a Rutgers fan.

Damn. I would love to have that game film. The best RU game ever. That was an incredible tournament. duke came in ranked #1, got beat by OH St, and we beat St. John's in the semis. Redmen beat Duke in consolation and then our game. Rocking sold out Garden. Just a different era for RU basketball - one we assumed would always continue.

I was there for both nights. Had front row seats for the semis, and then about 10 rows back for the consolation and final. I remember Sports Illustrated having a story on it. The sentence that stood out for me was that "Bailey's supporting cast was decidedly thinner than when he was a freshman."
Wildest basketball game I attended (until yesterday's Hawks-Knicks 4OT game).

Best basketball game I have ever seen in my life. We had by far the most fans in the building the night of the finals. Imagine that with Duke, Ohio State, and St John's the other three teams. I clearly remember when the Duke-St. John's consolation game was in the final media timeout of the second half, the Garden all of a sudden erupted into a very loud "let's go RU" chant. Don't forget, we were only three years removed from our Final Four appearance at the time. It seems like a different lifetime.

The good old days watching Rutgers perform with talent and winning against top tier competition.

Found this while looking for highlights of the 1979 ECAC final. 1981 game vs. Michael Jordan at MSG. The quality is rough, but interesting to see after all these years. Very good UNC team with Jordan, Worthy, Perkins, Doherty and Jimmie Black.

Looks like there are multiples of this item. Here is another listing on eBay for same DVD.

Was it a Bailey dunk that won it? All I remember is hearing the announcer saying Anderson the shot, then a lot of noise and then they won it..guy driving the car actually bumped car in front of us as we were pulling into Patti's parking lot after hearing it, so never heard the rest of the broadcast. Also never saw a video of game..would be cool if someone you-tubed final minutes..funny that Rutgers and Rutgers Prep's biggest wins in history were on the same night..

Tom Brown passed the ball to Bailey after looking to his right and passing the ball to Bailey on the left side of the basket where he just turned and dunked it with about 30 seconds left. Ramsey took a jumper with about 4 seconds left near the foul line and Anderson grabbed the rebound as time expired.

Still probably the best game I ever was involved with at Rutgers. That tournament was truly amazing.

I was roommates with Daryl Strickland in the team hotel and as a sidelight it was pretty neat that Gene Banks and Mike Gminski came to our room during the tournament while they were ranked #1 in the country.

Java, how come your county tournament was so early in the season?

Of course, the next year Roy came to Rutgers and started his way to becoming one of the better players in the country.

Best of Luck,
Groz

County tournaments used to be held at Christmas time..yes, Hinson went on to be Rutgers legend..star of our team was "Dinky" Proctor, who was on the NC St championship team of 1983

Amazing! That DVD is from the Ohio State radio broadcast . I was a senior and was on WRSU and broadcast the radio play by play with my partner Tony Malanga. One of the greatest games I had the pleasure of calling. Unfortunately, MSG was not too hospitable to student radio stations as our broadcast location was above the green seats. The players looked like ants running around.
Kelvin Ransey seemed like he never missed a shot. Bailey, Abdel and the crew with Kelvin being our enforcer would not quit and when Bailey jammed that ball home in the third OT , I almost lost my voice. I was hoarse for a week after that game. I got very friendly with Kelvin, Darius Griffin as the year went along , and I got lucky to do the radio call against Syracuse at the Manley Fieldhouse later in February in the next to last game played there before they moved to the Carrier Dome. I still think that was one of my best calls as we got absolutely hosed by the refs that night. We were up 9 and the refs proceeded to foul out almost our entire front line, JAMES, Abdel, and Kelvin and then Darryl . Those were my 2 favorite memorable broadcasts. I was in Greensboro and was ready to call the Elite Eight final until St. John's upset us. I have no doubt that would have been the best one because we would have killed Penn and played Magic in the Final Four. Wow what memories, like it was yesterday.

Goru7, I was at Greensboro with a friend and we were so upset that we lost to the Johnnies that we drove all the way back to New Jersey. We realized we would not be able to sleep after that loss. Tom Brown getting his pocket picked at half court with about 29 seconds left led to the Johnnies playing for the last shot and McKoy hit a jumper at the buzzer. We were sitting right under the basket and the ball rolled around the basket right in front of us. There was a red light on the backboard which went on while the ball was rolling around the rim. It was so disheartening. I also thought if that had not fallen we would have beaten Penn and made the Final Four once again. I have always wondered if anyone has a copy of that game as well. We had beaten the Johnnies twice that season before playing them this third time. All the media were talking about how hard it would be to beat a team 3 times in one season.

I was at that game in Greensboro. Yes, RU would have faced Magic in final four, and with an upset there, could have won it all, considering we were the last team to beat Indiana St. - in the previous years' NIT..I also remember going with my Dad to the Eastern 8 final, and being woken up in the middle of the night (after they beat Pitt in final) by the team singing "NCAA" to the "YMCA" song - we were staying at the same hotel

By the way, who bought the copies of the dvd of the Ohio State game? Can the person or persons give us a description of the product?

Always was bummed that Tom Brown transferred out. Any one know what his story was. Thought he was going to be a great player and I think he was a very good foul shooter.

Knights 1212, it was really amazing. It was spring break and on the way down , we had a CB, and were speaking to other students heading to Florida. When we got to Greensboro, each team was in their own hotels which were real close to one another and we were going to have one heck of a party that night. When we were up 10 at half against St. John's , we almost started a party in the arena. Then LOU switched to zone and we went cold. It eats me up that McCoy got that tip in at the buzzer as Bailey usually ate him up.. one of the disappointing losses ever for me as a Scarlet Night fan. Although I went to the Final Four as a freshman as a fan, if we won, I would likely have called one of the Final Four games probably against Magic. Still one of the biggest disappointments ever.

No other loss in the history of Rutgers basketball was as devastating. A win vs. the Johnnies and I firmly believe we would have advanced to the Final Four for the second time in four years. The bitter taste of that pill still resonates in my mouth almost 40 years later.

You're thinking of Rodney Duncan. Tom Brown transferred into RU.

I thought he transferred out too and liked him as a player. I remember a smooth foul shot.

The Rodney Duncan soap opera was amusing. Remember front page Home News Sports Section for awhile.

There is no doubt about this. Nothing else is really even close.

Just finished reading the piece -- interesting that the Holiday Festival was the same time Woody Hayes was ending his career by decking that Clemson kid in the Gator Bowl. Also interesting that almost 19,000 were in the Garden.
