BB Recruiting 2023 PG Jamichael Davis commits to Rutgers Hoops

Again, a lack of coverage or reporting does not make a player under the radar. It means the player or agency have extremely limited resources. There are 360+ programs in CBB.....if there are 1800+ starters in CBB, and most profiles stop at the 150 to 250 kids per for recruiting class, that means the system is very limited in coverage or an ability to determine anything for the majority of starters in CBB, let alone players who play off the bench.

The ratings system is not too relevant in accuracy, once you get beyond the Top 100 to 150. As soon as a kid commits, then it's a scramble to determine a rating, without any idea about the kid.

There was an unrated kid out of the Houston area less than a year ago who earned a Villanova offer (Brendan Hausen) and none of the rating services had any idea who he was.

Within days of earning his offer and committing to Nova, the systems then discovered who he was and asked him who was recruiting him from a Power 5 level......he went from NR (not ranked) or 2* kid to the Top 50 to start his ranking. There can't be such a thing as under the radar, if the system ignores the entire topic for over 80 to 85% of every kid playing CBB. I only linked the Nova kid because I was following the Mark Armstrong recruitment and who Nova and Jay Wright and the staff offered.

As soon as Jay Wright offers, suddenly the Nova fans questioned why the kid received the offer because he wasn't on any radar.....then after the offer, there was a mad dash to rate the player as highly as possible. The linked profile shows he was NR.

I would say there is a lack of coverage that makes the kid under the radar, not the lack of abilities. The entire sport of CBB can't all be under the radar, but reality is, it is 100% lack of coverage.

This kid is the definition of "under the radar." No profile on the three major recruiting services, and the fans of the school he just committed to (Rutgers) never heard of him. Kid played for a small, remote high school before transferring to McEachern, so it's understandable.

BUT...

I agree with you that being "under the radar" doesn't mean that the kid lacks abilities. When I look at his recent high school tape from a McEachern game, his game looks very similar to that of Derek Simpson. People lamenting over our slow, plodding guard play this year should be happy that we're going to have two guards who are lightning quick and can break down defenses.

I would love to see what Ru fans would have said about John Battle when he committed. Guy was 6th man on high school team and 4 years later in NBA. It there was internet in 1981.

It goes both ways.
How many players have committed that looked "great" on tape with excellent shooting strokes and RU fans predicted as immediate contributors?
Looking at you Palmquist.....

"Rutgers basketball has gone under the radar yet again for a backcourt recruit."

Exactly. Hawk doesn't seem to understand the term "under the radar". He is conflating it with ability level.

If this kid isn't under the radar, no one is

I didn't see him pass (maybe he did once I don't recall) on the highlight tape. Figure a PG would highlight his passing skills.
I’m sure he’ll be told to change his game for the BigTen…but he does shoot a high percentage. Some Steve Nash video might be useful to remind him that penetrating and trying to finish yourself ain’t always a good idea…because those circus finishes are not happening next year. Keep your dribble alive and dish off for dunks or threes.

Obviously you never know how it’ll translate but we can absolutely use more guys who can beat guys off the dribble and attack the rim which seems to be this guy’s game
Agreed. His skill set seems to match what the team overall is lacking. Guys who can attack off the dribble

He averaged 12 boards last year at his height too. That shows his effort and motor level is high. Kid seems like a good fit for Pike

Get in the paint, kick it to Cam or Gavin (or Chol?) or dish/oop to Cliff.
This could be a really good team to be a quick penetrating pass-first point guard on next season.
I don't know if that's what he is, but it seems like he has the tools to be really good at that.

Have not watched his highlights but sounds like from what most have described , he has some Corey Sanders driving ability in him with a better 3 point shot. I will take that all day long.

One, Palmquist. Everyone else has contributed at least occasionally.

Sure - occasionally.
But that's not exactly what people are year over year predicting.
Want the "Reiber is a 3 level scorer and lock to start at 4" threads?
How about the annual "Say goodbye to RHJ. He's is a 1st round pick" threads?
Or the more recent "Clif could be a 1st round pick" posts?
I won't even bring up Jaden Jones forcing his way into the starting lineup thread.

Just pointing out that yes people are underwhelmed with players and committments - rightly or wrongly.
But people are also equally overwhelmed unrealistically as well - rightly or wrongly.

I'm not sure which video you watched, but to get the best idea of his ability, people should also probably watch the video highlights of his game from November that I posted earlier, if they've only watched the highlight vid at the beginning of the thread. He passes a couple times in the more recent vid. (The original highlight video at the beginning of the thread, with him wearing white, isn't from this season.)

Repost of the more recent video is below, for anyone who didn't also watch it and wants to.

This video is better. He seems to be able to do it all on the court on both ends. I'm excited to have him

at least, he looks like he knows how to make layups. He even has knowledge of spinning the ball so it goes into the basketball...

few of our players have no basic concept of layups...

Jamichael Davis is very athletic for 6'2-6'3 guard, seems to have a nose for ball, rebounds well for a guard spot. Couple of box scores have him double digit rebounds at his size.

Like this video of his athleticism as well over a year ago

Nice to see he went from a small program to bball powerhouse with higher rated players yet still stepped right into a leadership role. Love it

He played for LFO HS., Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe. They faced Lafayette HS in a 14-0 vs 14-0 matchup and lost, finished 23-4 on the season, 21-22.

Even though I tend to be a realist but I see no problem with fans of a team being overly optimistic or excited about the future prospects of college players on the team they follow fanatically. On the other side of the coin - IMO its almost as if some people are afraid of being hopeful regarding things they have no control over......such as recruits or next level prospects ........so they express disdain instead.

Maybe its just me, but I would rather there be threads and Posts on RJH/Cliff being 1st round picks than to see negative comments like "Whiff" right out of the gate in a thread announcing a HS Kid commitment to RU. Some people here either troll or take it too personally but its really all just a crapshoot - especially after the first 50 top kids or so. Consider how much deviation to plan in terms of expectations to performance is in the NBA draft of only 60 guys under significant professional evaluation...........there are perhaps a half a million high school level basketball players and 341 Division 1 Programs signing somewhere in the range of 1000 players per year to scholarships. With that variation, they all can't be gold nuggets.....and ranking/offers likely becomes more and more unreliable as you get into the deeper pool.

If Pike reaches and can't get one of the top guys, he likely looks for raw materials and work ethic that he can mold. I can respect that.

ps.....Cliff is listed in the Top 100 Draft prospects......if he enters I will guess he is a 2nd Round pick right now.

My take is that he could be good but I'm still not a fan of more than half the roster being players with 0-2 other high major offers. Bac talked about threading the needle in his last recap and this is an offshoot of that. How many teams are consistently successful with that kind of roster construction?
Only one that I can think of. But one is enough as long as it's us.

Fluoride, you are getting way too excited over an opinion. Lol. Thanks for the kind words
He kind of has a point. There has been LOTS of interesting stuff that has happened in RU hoops in the past year. But this is what got you posting?

Every time we get a commit, need to go look at the Woolfolk and Simpson commitment threads lol.
These negative comments about under recruited players would make sense if we had a losing team and Pike was struggling. But we don't have a losing team and Pike is pounding nails. At some point you have to say that when something happens again and again, it's not an accident. Pike consistently finds underrecruited guys and builds them up and wins lots of games. That's not a problem. That's a winning formula.

Agreed. HC Pike has definitely earned the benefit of the doubt.

However, even HC Pike would admit that he wants high profile recruits. His actions of offering and trying to get high profile recruits on campus (he even got Chet Holgrem to visit unofficially) shows that while underrecruited players have worked out - we're still striving for higher.

Great story but:

TOS created a page for Hausen on 11/15/20 and graded him as the #187 prospect going into his junior season of high school. By the time fall of his senior year rolled around he was ranked #95 Your problem seems to be with Rivals only who was be late on Hausen.

Oklahoma offered 9/28/2019

Texas Tech offered 11/20/2019

Houston offered 6/15/2020

Texas A&M offered 6/16/2020

Minnesota offered 5/18/2021

Butler offered 6/7/2021

Vanderbilt offered 7/27/2021

Creighton offered 7/19/2021

Penn State offered 7/19/2021

Arizona State offered 7/20/2021

Oregon offered 7/20/2021

Virginia Tech offered 7/27/2021

Villanova offered 7/27/2021

You can't pretend that a player with one high-major offer entering his senior season is anything like a player with 13 of them who was rated as a top 100 prospect by TOS going into his senior season. And let's be honest, how committable do we think Auburn's offer is by itself? If he comes with Ace Bailey, sure, they'll take him. If Bailey goes somewhere else Auburn would've told this kid "thanks but no thanks."

He might be good. I'm not even opposed to taking him. We certainly need the actualized version of what he could be. But the narrative you're creating is fictional.

Ja Morant played AAU ball with Zion Williamson and wound up at Murray State. So, I assume a ton of folks saw Ja play, no? I'm not comparing Davis to Ja, but I think folks put waaaayyyy too much importance on how three or four or ten writers from Rivals, 247, ON3, etc. rank a kid.

I respect the work the writers/evaluators do on sites like this one. But take a look at the Rivals (or 247 or On3) Top 150 basketball kids from the last two, three or four years. And then tell me how many of those kids you think were worthy of that ranking now. Football rankings appear to be MUCH more correlated to college success than basketball rankings. If for no other reason than folks like Richie go see the football guys at camps, etc. but (from what I know) very rarely see a high school basketball prospect play in that kind of setting. There are way more eyes on football prospects than basketball prospects. Way more.

Just my $0.02.

Agree. No reason not to hope for the top guys. And that's not in conflict with also trusting Pike when an unheralded kid commits. I mean, the Simpson/Woolfolk class was as bad and as good as it gets. We aimed high and struck out on everybody. And Simpson and Woolfolk definitely seemed like Plan D guys. But they are great. Totally happy with them. This class, with Griffiths, is much better. And Davis has an Auburn offer and obvious talent on film. So, no reason to doubt.

Ain’t no way in hell he’s a 2nd rounder now… talk to me end of year. He’s got a lot to work on…

Woolfolk was a late find. Simpson was not a plan D guy. Pike prioritized him

Your wrong, but you're point clearly supports what I'm saying.

The offers are undocumented and there's no way to confirm what is or isn't an offer.

What you did confirm was 187 to 55 is solely based on Nova and Jay Wright offering. The other offers or having someone in the high 180s, is something that all the fans complain about as "under the radar".

There's nothing fictional about the player mentioned, he was not rated until Nova offered. Which you already documented that I was correct on, because Rivals didn't have a profile for the kid.

The whole point of the discussion on Davis and my post is correct. If the player isn't a 4*, he's not landing on a Rivals 150 and once you get past 130 in most cases, the rating goes from 4* to 3*.

With 350+ programs, there are almost 1800 starters at programs big and small. We have already seen 2* or unranked kids go from mid major to starting at high major by the time a players college junior year arrives. And you completely disregard need and fit in terms of roster, style of play and base things solely on the fact that you or most everyone here didn't know who the player was beforehand.

The longer a players name is mentioned, the more valuable his apparent value is to a fanbase, irregardless of his ability or not. Which is fine if you want to base things on ratings. Davis fits what the roster should look like if you're going to support a Gavin Griffiths type of player. You need a faster tempo guard, who can drive and kick and find a shooter, moving without the ball, to maximize his chances to score.

You also don't want to ask a player like Griffiths to be an all everything player, that is asked to defend the best guards on defense and be in the passing lanes. That will be Davis and Simpsons responsibility or role, to fit the pieces together. There are hundreds of guards at "under the radar status" that can provide that.

A volume scoring point guard would lift the ceiling off the RAC. Welcome Ja-Mike. Prepare for greatness.

Ain’t no way in hell he’s a 2nd rounder now… talk to me end of year. He’s got a lot to work on…

Question.......Do you watch a lot of NBA games and also follow the draft and projetions closely? If yes, then happy to have this debate.
