I know it was mentioned in another thread, but I think it deserves its own.

Congrats to Anthony for being selected as one of the top 30 QBs of the class of 2016.

You very well may be right about that but there is no denying that JG would have had a bigger impact on getting other top rated NJ recruits to RU in this class. I'm sure there will be people who argue this point with me.

Because they're all following him to Tennessee, right?

Oh wait...

Agreed that this should be about Russo. I think most of our fans are very happy with him. I'm just talking about recruiting momentum. The other kid at RU would have been positive for RU recruiting, much more than it would be for Tenn due to his playing for a high profile NJ program and being so highly ranked.

I don't get it. If Russo is a Top 30, how were we competing with a bunch of 1aa's programs for him? Why weren't the big boys going after him?

If Russo performs next year as well as he is currently doing, he should get more offers, although he does not have a strong arm. One can argue that a stron arm is not an absolute must in college football like it is in the NFL. I hope we can hold on to him. I am impressed with this kid.

I don't get it. If Russo is a Top 30, how were we competing with a bunch of 1aa's programs for him? Why weren't the big boys going after him?

Two main reasons:

1. He didn't start until his junior year. By the time he was properly evaluated, many schools already had their QB targets set.

2. He is a prototypical pocket passer, and most college teams are looking for more mobility or the ability to run a spread offense these days. Russo fits like a glove into Rutgers' offense; not so with many other teams.

Their loss is our gain.

lets see the other top 30 programs had made their choices. Also he did not to the camp route and play high profile game. And last he was not from an elite school. not a big conference
those are the three things that come to mind also #4 I think he might have been regional meaning ~5 hour radius for a school (he was not going to a $hitty southern school). Also #5 he did commit early as other less then Top 30 school were starting to look at him but some guy Flooded him with attention early on, as he saw the talent was there.
Oh yea WE R B1G

Just pointing out that we should be happy with Russo. A QB that throws TDs and we dodged a bullet with the QB who throw too many picks.

Im happy we got Russo but to say not getting JG is dodging a bullet is a pretty bold statement.

You are exactly right here, could not have stated it better.

Most of the 4 * QBs have been playing/starting and are known commodities by their Junior year. Kids who only start as Juniors are already behind the curve.

ding ding, exactly what Chech said. theres no question JG is an all around athlete, Russo is a smart decision maker with a decent arm. its two different things that they bring to the table, shouldn't disparage JG. Russo prob fits our pro style a little better with his ability to play fake, roll out, throw on the run, make the intermediate throws. JG fits Butch's offense more, no question about that if you watch their current qb dobbs now.

He is pro-style QB and many college programs are moving away from that. I am sure that his star ratings will go up before he finishes HS.

Other programs may try to make him decommit before then as well.

blog post:

The Elite 11 features some of the best rising-senior quarterbacks in the country, and boasts a proud history:

10 of the past 11 quarterbacks to have won the Heisman Trophy attended the Elite 11 Finals or an Elite 11 regional. 35 of the top 49 NFL passers in 2014 attended the Elite 11 Finals or an Elite 11 regional.

If you want to watch Russo in action, the Elite 11 Semifinals will be live streamed at Elite11.com.

All the reviews say he has a strong arm and can make all the throws.

Recognizing that we are talking about 17 year old kids - but It seems like Russo is very solid - determined and has all the tools - and a plenty strong arm - see the following from the beginning of last season -

http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2014/09/05/high-school-top-10-woods-anthony-russo-primed-to-lead/

“All I ever asked for was a chance to prove myself,” said Russo, who throws an 87 mph fastball and is receiving some Division I attention for baseball. “It was definitely tough watching the last two years. Any competitor doesn’t want to sit and watch. It was a grind. My parents and I had plenty of sit downs to think about my future. I even thought about giving up football, and I’ve been playing since I was four. I didn’t want to be handed the starting job; I wanted to earn it. When I got a chance to prove myself, I won the job.”

- I think that his baseball ambitions have now been put on the shelf

Thats a good point, but its also not a fair comparison. One would expect that NJ kids would have alot of disparate options, but that alot of them would share a common interest in RU in addition to all of the various schools they were individually interested in. In other words - you would expect, at least in theory, for an instate kid to have a disproportionate impact on the instate schools recruiting, but not on other schools.

In JGs case - Tennessee was the choice because his dad was coached by their ccurret coach. No one else has that connection. But the whole group shares a connection with RU - its in their state. They have mostly been here many times.

The only reason i won't say dodged a bullet is because of the potential other recruits he would have brought with him. But in terms of a QB, anyone that is close to the situation knows not to be surprised when he converts to a WR or transfers out.

Perhaps this will get Rivals to give him the 3rd star that just about everyone has given him.

Seems like the 3rd star is a foregone conclusion. Hopefully a good outing at the camp gets Mitchell, Hawkins and Upshur on board.

Congrats to Russo. Interesting to see names like Anthony Brown, Haskins and Guarrantano as well on the list.

Would be great to see Russo have various rounds of growth (skill & physical) - and turn out to be absolutely the best choice of all
... things like this do happen every once in a while ...

Congrats to Russo - great to hear he's doing well. I hope he continues to shine. If stars are something he appreciates, I hope he gets bumped up - but really, we've already offered and he's committed, so stars are pretty meaningless at this point other than for perception purposes.

Russo is a very solid QB prospect with a lot of potential. Obviously the staff thought highly of him because he was the 3rd QB they offered.
