Gotta say, I'm shocked at the responses may people had to the crowdfunding campaign. I realize we all live and work in different worlds, but crowdfunding is done for just about EVERYTHING these days. Essentially, Obama's first campaign was won by crowdfunding. While the Republicans were looking for $10,000 checks, Obama went after 1000 people spending $25 each. In the end, he raised an insane amount of money -- much from people that had never donated to a political campaign before. He also used that donation list for many more purposes in the years to come.
In the arts & entertainment field, everybody crowdfunds. It's how records are produced and paid for, money for shows come about, magazines, books, etc.
Check out kickstarter.com and you'll see everything from businesses to inventions getting seed money from crowdfunding. It's basically the venture capital of today.
There were so many people who seemed to think that someone set up a false account for the Rutgers University Foundation.... unreal. The organization seriously was simply going to get a check, sent directly by gofundme.com -- all legit and everything.
I think there are people who WANT a few large donors running the show and pulling the strings rather than hundreds or thousands of people having a say. I bet Rutgers would do very well with donations if they sought the latter. God knows we don't have many wealthy donors on board... maybe the answer is 5,000 small donors.
Congrats to the campaign and the people that tried making a difference. I think you did.
