Assessing B1G 10 in 2018 (recruiting; players graduating etc)...Team By Team

Block, I’m not sure how old you are

it’s not debatable, actually. Removing the one team per conference rule was a direct result of what happened in 1974. That caused the need to expand the field, which was done ASAP.

old enough to know the reason the tournament expanded may have started with an M, but it wasn't for Maryland, it was for money. Maryland wasn't even the only top 10 team left out of the 1974 tournament and there had been plenty in previous seasons. So no, it wasn't all about Maryland back then.

Interesting to see your perception, though.

It is not perception when they made a TV documentary on this issue with a who's who of cbball from coaches and analysts.

No offense but MD fans have followed ACC and NCAA history for alot longer than Rutger fans since they have been in battles with 2 HOF coaches and alot more relevant.

One who is synonymous with Midnight Madness and other won a NC, along with NBA alums.

Agree to disagree since you are not going to watch the doc. And let's move on since that is not the MAJOR point of my post that you nitpicked.

The major issue is that MD's ADs have been beyond awful. A decent hire can yield bigger results. Turgeon has reached his ceiling.

We have dominated the ACC in championships across many sports along with UNC and other schools were not even close.

For any ACC school-- other than UNC-- to claim Athletic Dept prowess over MD is a joke. Our AD as a whole has done pretty well.

Doing same in the B10 with conf championships. Leading the way.

No offense, but I'm not a Rutgers fan, nor would that be relevant to my point. I do find your sense of self importance to be amusing, however.

Just stating the facts lol. The AD dept has done pretty well in the ACC and doing very well in B10.

B10 fans should see the number of conference championships from last year and who is near the top. Just facts. ;)

Right now is a turning point though with the AD hire.

My main school is not hard to figure out with location. You don't want hear about that football tradition. Many accuse that school of having ego fans. lol

Well since MD has joined July 2014, it has been #1 in winning B10 titles.

Ahead of Michigan, OSU and UPS (13).

Should be proud of the accomplishments :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

You are absolutely right that it would have happened eventually regardless of any one team's situation.

Agree, Turgeon would be fired if it were not for the worst contract with no extension by the worst AD in history.

According to many college bball experts MD should expect better. No reason why schools like UVA (less tradition) are performing better. It has 2 HOF coaches, a NC and many NBA players over the years with a rabid fanbase.

Turgeon will be gone in one or two years IMO. Attendance and tide is starting to go against him.

Yeah, lots of other things being said in this thread. None if it should distract us from the fact that Mark Turgeon should be and will likely be fired before his contract expires. Attendance is down. Ticket prices are down. Neither bode well for his future.

Turgeon is a nice guy, but he's uninspiring. He never caught on with fans and didn't really attract new major donors. He's a good recruiter but he doesn't develop talent as well as he should and his coaching is sometimes plain suspect. He was a safe hire in that he won't cheat but he'll never win a national championship and will likely never make a Final Four. There's no reason Maryland fans shouldn't expect those accomplishments from their head coach. Maryland has facilities, resources, a tradition of winning, fan support, an enviable recruiting footprint, and has the benefit of not having a dominant football program to outshine. With a tradition of being led by Hall of Fame head coaches, Maryland can do better than Turgeon.

What really annoys me about Turgeon is that he and his teams get about 90% of the basketball stuff correct but the 10% he/they get wrong is the exact same things every single year. The collective just doesn't improve in certain aspects under him. Melo Trimble masked a lot.

Turgeon's recruiting will always keep Maryland from being terrible but his coaching will always prevent Maryland from being great. There's a reason that in 20 years as a head coach he's only been to two Sweet 16s. He's just not that good a coach.

I pray for the day when Rutgers has Maryland’s “problems”.

It all begins with school commitment. I have talked to some very elite cball analysts and coaches and in private due to my past industry. And virtually all ranked the MD job (nor program but as a job) right below the elites.

The fertile location, a NC, the fanbase, 2 HOF coaches, NBA alums for over the years etc.

But MD has some the worst Athletic Director hiring luck in the world. Even a B+ hire would do wonders at UMD.

But #1 in B10 championships since entering the B1G is not bad.
