Burgess, Mirabelli Set for NCAA Outdoor Championships June 5-8

Graduate student Chris Mirabelli and sophomore Taj Burgess of Rutgers men's track and field are set for the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships June 5-8 in Austin, Texas. Mirabelli advanced to the javelin finals for the fourth year of his career, while Burgess moved on to the 400m semifinal for the second straight season.

NCAA Track Championships 2019: The incredible comeback of Rutgers' Chris Mirabelli



Chris Mirabelli was coming off the best season of his life. The Rutgers University track and field standout had earned first team All-America honors in the javelin. He won the Penn Relays with a monster throw of 76 meters (251 feet, 6 inches). He defended his Big Ten crown in the event.

The future seemed limitless.

Then, at the start of his senior year, Mirabelli got bad news: He had suffered a torn labrum and a torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder. In order to throw at a national-class level again, he would need experimental surgery.
