Call your shot now. Will we be IN or OUT

Out with a but.

As bac2therac pointed out in his Princeton recap, there is little sign of fundamental change from game to game.

Yet, humans are resilient, and some teams show dramatic changes at some point in the season.

Thus, my "but" is that I'll retain the hope that Pike does what he needs to do to get this team to crash the boards, play defense, and care about each other more.

Admittedly, my "but" is not a high-odds event.

OUT.

Called it on 12/7 in Bac's post game recap against OSU.

Anyone saying "in" is just in fan-mode and ignoring reality.

If you say "in", I'd be curious about the 2-4 things that you believe need to change/improve for us to go dancing.

Bac, to get in they would need to beat Columbia and go 12-8 or 13-7 in the Big Ten. Does that sound right? Assuming they beat some teams in the field.
12-8 with a Columbia win puts them in legit bubble discussion at 19-12 but its no sure thing, depending on who those wins are against. I dont see 18-13 doing much

of course this team can go on a run and win the Big 10 tourney as some crazy runs have happened with teams making the finals and Dylan will be the best player in that tourney

Agree with you, but I think we need to stop putting Ace and Dylan in the same sentence. They both cam in as highly touted recruits, and will most likely both leave as high first found draft picks. On the court one guy has NBA Starter/All Star written all over him, while the other can put points up, but is not efficient and the rest of his game needs a lot of work. Who would Ace be on a real competitive team like Duke or Kentucky? 8Pts/3 Rebs maybe?

Putting his hype and NBA projection aside Ace is still averaging close to 18 pts and 8 rebs a game.

That’s pretty rare for a true freshman.

He’s very low on the list of concerns for me.

We have lost games in the final possession. We can score. I believe the defensive adjustments will be made and the team will fight for each other. Pike will find the right combination in his rotations. Color me Scarlet …

This is why I'm sure it isn't happening. We don't have the roster to turn it up on defense. Where is our Caleb and/or Mag?

If my call is wrong (I hope it is), it's only because we got more efficient on offense. Pike doesn't do offense though so....

The real question is will we make the NIT. I would say our NCAA changes are very slim, we have systematic issues that can’t be fixed with these players. The trends, schedule and numbers are clear, we are likely a 13-15 win team. I say:

NCAA: 5%
NIT: 20%
Nothing: 75%

OUT.

I say “in” via fan mode

The path: They go 10-10 in the big ten but then get red hot and make the big ten championship game and either:
- win that game, or
- lose that game but prove enough and do enough to get in

I think we need to find the Jacob young for this team, and once we do, play
him. It’ll make a difference

Isn't Harper a better Jacob Young?

Does the team need to do anything different for your scenario or just keep doing what they're doing and we'll get there?

We need the energy catalyst. That’s what I meant by a Jacob young. We need to find that guy and play him bc we don’t have it now.

If Pike somehow turns this team around and they make the tourney somehow I would credit him with being a great coach
Just don’t see it happening though

From game 1 to game 12 nothing has changed. Team really sucks at defense and they're not getting any better at it. Offense we don't run one to get easy buckets and still haven't.

So, OUT

This team has not gotten better in 12 games and nothing's been shown to say they will in the next 19 against better competition.

In, just so I can gloat if they do!

We will know in mid January if they have a chance. First four big ten games provide great opportunities for big wins (IU, Wisc, Purdue, UCLA). Win 3 of those 4 we are in business.

If I have to choose I will say out but a young team will keep getting better also. Problem is it might become too little too late.

Out

Bonus prediction: when it’s over this season will be more embarrassing than anything that happened during the Mike Rice or Eddie Jordan era.

History lesson kids....its a pleasure going down memory lane again from when I was at Rutgers.

The comparison that I can come up with is the 90-91 NCAA Rutgers team led by Hughes/Duncan/Dabbs who went on to win what was the last mens basketball championship of any kind when they won the regular season Atlantic 10

A lot of hype entering the season, the first year with Hughes/Duncan they were up and down in 89-90 never quite reaching their potential but we had them coming back for another year. I think finished 18-17 but the RAC student section was lit back then. This time with the edition of Virginia transfer Brent Dabbs at center, we were all set for a great year.

Started out with a 9PM or was it 9:30 ESPN game vs Missouri who was ranked and had future NBA star Doug Smith. One of the top 10 RAC games ever if not top 5, the crowd was insane.RU would roll through St Bonnies 71-45 the following game but next game vs I believe D2 Bridgeport they sleptwalked to a 90-84. Close A10 conference wins would follow at St Joes and Curry Hicks Cage at UMass where Calipari was just getting started. Unfortunately the next game on a sleepy noon Saturday on national tv, Rutgers laid an egg against Princeton...when it STILL WAS A RIVALRY 58-45. Princeton would finish the regular season 24-2 and ranked 18th and as the 8 seed lost to 9 seed Villanova 50-48 in the NCAA tourney.

The Princeton game kicked off a rough patch where many were writing RU. A double digit loss to SHU at the Brenden Byrne Area followed along with a close loss to Marylandin the ECAC Holiday Festival at MSG. RU did manage to uphend Shawn Bradley led BYU in the consolation. However the ultimate insult was a loss to lowly Duquense at the RAC by 16. A life and death 66-63 struggle against overmatched Delaware two days later did not ease fears. A trip on the road to Temple and West Virgiinia was disastrous with 2 twenty point plus losses. Losers of 6 of 8 and standing at just 7-6, everyone was writing the Scarlet Knights off.

But then suddenly Rutgers gathered some steam. One by one they started picking off teams and the 10 point road win vs Digger Phelps coached Notre Dame served notice that RU was bac. Rutgers would prove drama queens escaping Rhode Island at the RAC 60-59 and in a 79-878 thriller at Rec Hall. We were dreaming big dreams again. I dont know when the UNLV game was scheduled that season. I know it was during the season. The Temple game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved to a rare Friday to accomodate the trip to Vegas for the UNLV game on Sunday. Its one of my fave games there and most underrated. RU was on fire from the start hitting on all cylinders and I believe going up 18-2 enroute to a 82-63 beatdown enacting revenge on the Owls for the previous loss

Alas RU was beat up by #1 UNLV 115-73 in a game broadcast on ABC. The Knights would rebound and win the next 4 to make it 10 wins in their last 11 to push their mark to 17-7 and the A10 regular season title was in their grasp. However for some reason, sub 500 Duquense was RU's kryptonite as the Knights fell in Pittsburgh. A wild 103-96 overtime win at the RAC followed setting up the A-10 title clinching blowout win over Penn State 82-63. A court stomring..well not really...it was a walk onto the court by the student section and I remember that night partying with Rutgers own and CNBC star Becky Quick. Just to do things in typical Rutgers fashion, RU dropped an overtime game to 8th seed St Joes in the A10 tourney. At 19-9 there was a real question if RU would get in. Back then there was very little if any bracketology and deep analysis of bubble schools. Penn State won the autobid by winning in the A10 tourney and Temple at 21-9 was considered more of a national program and a likely pick. The A10 deep in the shadows of the Big East might not get a third team in.

Turns out there was no reason to worry...Not only did Rutgers get in but they were seeded 9th to Temple who was a 10. RU would blow a game they had late with sloppy play vs 8th seed Ariizona State and missed a chance to face the #1 seed Nolan Richardson led Arkansas Razorbacks. By the way Penn State was seeded just 13th and upset 4th seed UCLA before losing to 12th seed Eastern Michigan. Temple led by Mark Macon was seeded 10th but would reach the elite 8 before bowing to North Carolina.

So team started 7-6 with a lot of hype and found its way. Granted the supporting cast was better. I think that team from 91 would be this years Scarlet Knights. I am not sure the Dream Big Dreams team from 89 who went on a miracle run late really is applicable in this situation.
