This morning when being interviewed by Rick Neuheisal and Chris Childers Coach Ash mentioned that many of the Spring's practices would be open to the public (fans, students ,etc) He said he would do this to improve fan relations, enthusiasm, and make practices more fun. Former UCLA/U Wash/ Colorado coach Neuheisal agreed with him it's a great idea, and said the recent trend of closing practices was a sure way to hurt fan interest, and was not done as much in the PAC 10.

Ash also stated that he had used 19 scholarships including the ones to the 2 transfers and that he had a total of 22 to give this year. He said he was holding 2 for a late commit or for additional transfers.

I didn't think he used 17 for the new class of 2016 unless he gave out some to non-scholarship players already on the team.

By the way, it was a very good interview and he sounds very sincere.

There were 17 letters signed & faxed in from the 2016 class - how could they have used anything less than 17 scholarships?

Seriously speaking. How many FANS are going to show up to watch practices? And how much are these stalwarts going to influence the fan base and ticket sales? During the Shea years myself, Bill86, and ringoes Jim would attend, but it really meant absolutely nothing. Although I do have an interesting story to tell.

Probably several hundred. Last year's one open practice was jammed packed even with 100 degree temps. Hard to tell about ticket sales, but don't think that's the primary reason anyway.

The fanbase has grown quite a bit since the 90s.

The limit that matters is the 85 when he says he has 22.

Where the early enrollees are counted only affects 25 yearly limit. Even if all 17 counted this year we could have 8 early enrollees next year that could count towards 2016. The 85 limit again would be an issue long before we could fill that and a new class.

I would love to see at least one open practice geared to and advertised to youth football players, parents, and coaches. I assume we already do that for high school football.
