Coach Mike Rice

Once the abuse video hit the air waves Rice was cooked. I thought he had one good recruiting class before he went off the cliff and word got out to propects about his terroristic side. Terror aside, on a coaching level you just had to see the way he cratered Dane Miller's game and career. If you want to keep your talent....pass on Rice.

I got to know Mike Rice pretty well as a member of the Court Club. He was such a nice guy at our meetings that he had us in stitches. He was really a nice guy but in the competitive world of college basketball he was driven so much to win that he made mistakes. He was a fiery guy and things seemed to have gotten the best of him. He was far from perfect but many old school coaches were just as tough on their athletes. He definitely should not have done all that he did but none of us are perfect. He did many things above and beyond to raise money for the American Cancer Society. In my mind I feel that he definitely deserves a second chance and I hope he gets it.

If Mike Rice is back in play, when can we expect Seton Hall to hire Emanuel Richardson?

Dude couldn't shoot. I'm not sure you can blame that on Rice...although I think Pikiell is a much better coach than Rice.

He had hops and was a very good finisher. He scored 300 points as a freshman in Hill's last season. By the time he finished his senior year he scored 200 points. Absent any injuries I have to lay a lot of the on Rice and his toxic program. ***If Deshawn Freeman could jump like Dane Miller he would have been much better around the rim. I really like Freeman's game but he couldn't just elevate...he needed a running start to get up.

Maybe Eric Murdock is a bad guy. Are people making a poor judgement on him?

I obviously don't have all the facts here, but I have observations.

Shouldn't he be commended for speaking out?
From observations on the bench Rice treated Murdock like crap. There was one interaction during a game in front of the team and crowd where Rice went off on him.

Just one example, but there was an instance in a game where Murdock got off the bench and yelled at the guards to press/trap at half court. Guard ended up fouling rather quickly and Rice yelled at Murdock "if you ever pull that shit again you're off my staff"...or something along those lines since it's not what Rice wanted on that possession...granted you can hear this same thing about 5 times a game on most staff's.

They didn't seem to have a good relationship, especially towards the end. Murdock wasn't putting the proper time in as a coach, but he had the ex NBA player factor and the players seemed to like him.

Whole thing was a perfect storm of a head coach taking things too far, a lower assistant who thought he was more special than he was and a program that hadn't won nearly enough to survive any type of controversy.

From what I heard Murdock originally just asked for health insurance for him and his family for a year while he hunted for another job and Rutgers told him to F off so it just grew from there (true or not I don't know). He wasn't coming back to the staff either way and the tapes were his leverage (still doesn't make anything in them better).

I got to watch Coach Rice up close in games for all of the years he was here and there wasn't anything I saw that I hadn't seen other places and that made me feel like "this guy is a nut job and shouldn't be a head coach". He was/is a really good coach, not that it makes what we saw on video any better...even with it happening all over the country.
