Coaching search: Source within coaching circles and RU

NC State and ASU wanted a limo ride. All we want to do is stop hitch hiking. I'll settle for a cab for now (and a very nice one). It beats what we are doing now.

We need a mechanic, driver ed teacher, a driver, 0 percent financing, and an a government bail out.

Masiello would be an embarrassing hire for Hobbs. He's not hosting a presser with the kind of questions that could be asked about the new coach. Surprised that Politi stretched his list with so many lightweights. I just don't see Hobbs bringing in a guy from FGCU or St Bonnie to run HIS basketball program in the B1G. If he doesn't have the dough for a P5 HC or top assistant, then I think he'll suffer with Eddie for another year and say that a Loyal Son deserves another shot with a healthy roster of his own recruits ... no matter how obvious it is that he can't manage a collegiate program. And then Hobbs turns his attention to finding a Division 4 opponent for the opener of the 16-17 season.

Whomever Hobbs brings in, is going to need a dynamite recruiting class. I don't see how any of these guys are going to walk in the door with the ability to recruit the guys we need.

In addition to being a dynamite recruiter, we need a guy with a sparkling resume, and a personal life devoid of controversy.

Add it up, and as Nuts would say, I don't think we can afford what we actually need.

therefore might as well keep EJ.

This, and for exactly that reason, too. Hobbs is going to want to sit there and beam proudly at his guy, not have to defend him.

Masiello will probably do well at a bigger job when his chance comes, but that will not be at Rutgers. It would be a terrible fit at this point in time.

The guy from St. Bonaventure merits a closer look, though. I don't know too much, but it's impressive what he's done.

Mark Schmidt is a helluva coach.

Gets good players to go to a school that's a harder sell than Rutgers----with worse facilities.

If he's interested in the RU job I would have him on the short list at minimum.

Kenny Payne was an interesting name from Politi. Hobbs went the pedigree route at SHU with Willard (Pitino) and for football with Ash (Meyer). Does he follow the pattern for MBB ?

Don't put words in my mouth - EVER - thank you.

There isn't going to be a dynamite recruiting class for next season and there will be very few scholarships two years later. It really doesn't matter without shovels in the ground for the practice facility because Rutgers has nothing to sell to recruits right now.

Just looked him up........49 years old.......

If Hobbs goes the assistant coach route I think he would be looking at about 10 years younger than this. I think Hobbs will go with someone that has significant HC experience this go around.

Great point. Not much younger than Sendek but likely cheaper....

The shovels won't stop or delayed because of a buyout,in my opinion.
They might hit the ground faster because of it, with more donations coming in once fans start hoping again .
Rutgers needs to show they are serious about improving their MBB program , now, or
the promise of upgrading the program won't mean much to recruits .
If Jordan is retained, next season must show RU MBB is on its way to being a winning program by the team playing much better and pulling off more than one upset of a top program while being competitive in all.
Unless that happens, Hobbs will have failed by keeping Eddie.

Whoever replaces Jordan ( if Eddie is let go after this season is over) must make RU MBB look like it will start becoming a program it's fans can be proud of and have top recruits look at Rutgers as a place they might want to be, instead of one that they shun by playing competitively next season and looking like it will keep improving .

OK, two posters have now suggested Schmidt. He is 53, same age as Sendek, but does not have Sendek's experience at big schools. Sendek would not necessarily be my first choice, but my choices are unrealistic, like Luke Walton. Sendek did pretty well in the ACC, against Coach K, Dean Smith and Lefty, all HOF now or future, who snared the better recruits almost on name, only. Also tough in the Pac 10, with UCLA, and Stanford, at least, having a strong basketball tradition. Was not super thrilled when all the buzz seemed to center on Sendek, but then again, I thought he was over 60, not 53. Another plus--he is bright. 4.0 in HS, and class valedictorian despite the demands on his time being a starter on the basketball team entailed. So 2.8 cheers for Sendek from this poster.

this program needs a proven head coach with experience more than anything. Dont want Payne, why isnt he coaching somewhere...remember Norm Roberts at Kansas...I think the assistant route works better in football and Willard had head coaching experience

He doesn't want the RU job.

don't think he would leave or don't think he would be in the top 5....look he isn't exactly being offered any other jobs....he would easily jump..he jumped for before to a horrible job at USF a job worse than RU if that's possible

Oh come now. He accepted USF. Manhattan totally bailed him out. He would walk to Rutgers for this awful job.
Think you're probably right ruman , but , in my opinion ,Masiello like anyone taking on a new job with a lot of problems, he would want Hobbs to give him the time and authority to fix what he feels needs fixing.
If he doesn't get that, michstfr would be right.
Hurley would have been the RU HC , instead of Jordan, if Rutgers met his terms

And contract extensions won't stop anyone leaving, the day after it's signed, if a better offer comes. So Manhattan giving Masiello one doesn't mean a thing if RU offers him the position

After reading this entire thread and being a long time suffering RU MBB fan, if you tell me now that Steve Masiello is the next RU MBB coach then I am all in with that choice.

But if Pat Hobbs can do better than Steve Masiello from Manhattan then I am going to be deliriously happy with our next HC.

Hoops, I might take a clipper to a few stray cuticles but never would I cut off an appendage for RU hoops.. Football? Now just call me lefty..

What the Ash hire showed us is that Hobbs is not just hiring for a demonstrated skillet, he is looking for the right mindset. We can debate about coaching accomplishments but since we are not sitting in on the interviews we won't know diddly about the candidates' mindset.

I want someone like Ash who is burning for the job, has a vision, can communicate, values fans and is prepared to work long days. Jordan not only seemed to lack the coaching skillet but also the right mindset.

Reactions: RU MAN
I would look to the Duke University assistant coaches:
1. Jeff Capel (probably likely successor to Coach K)
2. Nate James (on Duke staff since 2007)
3. *Jon Scheyer*
Former McDonalds All-American and Parade First Team 2006
played for Duke 2007-2010- 2 year captain-10th all time in Duke scoring
played professionally for 3 years
on Duke coaching staff since 2013
*I don't care about his age or lack of head coaching experience. This young man has the pedigree to be a long time Division 1 head coach in the future. How long did Chris Collins or Wojo unnecessarily have to be assistants before they were given a head coaching opportunity? I think they would have been just fine if they were given the opportunity years before they were chosen. I bet he would be very impressive if given an interview. Similarly, I bet if a recruit's parents allows him into their home to represent Rutgers, he would impress them. This guy could be the answer if Rutgers is willing to take a chance.

2010 article.

http://www.northjersey.com/sports/van-gundy-is-bullish-on-rutgers-hoops-1.293201

"That wouldn’t be my first thought," he said. "It’s a different game and I think the people who do it well are deeply embedded in it. There would be a great learning curve for me. … If I was doing the profile, I would find someone in his 40s or early 50s, in that range, who’s proven they can win at the highest level, proven they can recruit New York and New Jersey, but also have an alternate source for recruiting, "

Hurley also took his turn to describe the ideal job applicant. (Like Van Gundy, too, Hurley has no interest himself.)

"I think it’s important that it’s someone young on the way up, that they not fall victim to just hiring a name," Hurley said, repeating recent advice he gave to Seton Hall, which hired Iona’s Kevin Willard. "If Seton Hall needs work, then Rutgers needs even more work. If you get an older guy now, it’s a lot of work, being out there and being active in the recruiting game."
