Columbia Post Game Analysis

1) a win is a win but after an ugly start who wouldve thought a month ago that our 2 spark plugs to win a game would be Caleb and Shaq Carter!?

2) in my SHU post game thoughts, I said I think Caleb has earned more playing time and that Pike should let him and Geo play together. We saw that today and Caleb didnt disappoint. He played great defense, passed well, rebounded well, closed out, unfortunately he got the ball taken from him up top a time or two but Caleb played solid under control ball today. And how about DRILLING four HUGE free throws at the end!? Im impressed.

3) Shaq Carter just understands positioning and using the basket as a shield to shot blockers. Hes great under the hoop and deserves more minutes. He finishes at a high % and knows his role.

4) Issa continues to struggle. He just has zero confidence, wasnt even hitting wide open 3s today.

5) Ron Harper’s shot is lost. He threw up two air ball threes today. It’s hard to explain how he went from 8/9 from 3 and AAU tourney MVP to not being able to hit the rim. Once that shot comes around hes gonna be good because he does everything else pretty well.

All in all, wouldve liked to see it be a little more convincing and we have to start hitting threes but it’s a great revelation to see Caleb playing with confidence and looking like he knows he belongs out there

I also wonder if part of it is that he got into the S&C program and hes trying to adjust to his new strength on his shot.

I mean it’s apples and oranges but when I used to lift weights alot my shot was garbage and again granted I play in post grad leagues in Hoboken. But I dont really lift much anymore, just do cardio and play ball and my shot is lights out. So I wonder if him doing weight training has effected his shot

Kiss is an all or nothing guy. If his shot is falling hes an asset on O and stretches the defense all gives Geo more space. If his shot is off, he usually provides little value on O and hes not a great defender. Caleb i believe will become an important guard for us in B1G play. Long, plays good D, can handle the ball, is a pretty damn good shooter, can get to the bucket, can hit free throws. Hes earned more minutes

As the season has progressed the offense has regressed to such a level to where its become unwatchable at times.Thank goodness Columbia played down to Rutgers offensive futility in the second half allowing both teams to grind it out to the last shot of the game.McConnell was my most valuable player with the clutch foul shots and good defensive effort.

we also have to work on in bounding the ball under pressure....we were very fortunate the time Columbia stole the ball, blew the layup, then fouled us, and we got two foul shots....4 pt swing to our favor late.

could have easily been the difference in a close game.

the guard ball handling was spotty all game, and many ill advised passes inside that did

You can tell when a player doesnt have confidence.

1) release takes too long
2) their follow through is rushed and hands come into chest rather than finishing high

When your open and you catch the ball you set your feet and shoot in ryhthm. Just because you dont have a defender within 15 feet doesnt mean you sit there and take your time shooting. Just set your feet and let it rip

4. It didn't work having Eugene as a 3 as a freshman....most of the game today we were reminded
5. Not sure what to do with Mathis. He just doesn't seem to fit in the offense
6. We need Kiss.
7. Teams that shoot 1-18 from 3 don't win.
8. Everyone talking about Shaq C, Shaq D had a huge game too
9. Not sure why Baker is not inbounding ball in big spot

Agree, your best passer should be in bounding and your best athlete should ideally be catching the inbounding as hopefully the have strong hands and can get separation

Very good points. I felt that Issa was good defensively and the only one showing effort on that end early in the game. Obviously I am not thrilled with eeking out a win against Columbia, but good to see Caleb and Shaq Carter take another step forward. And I much rather be typing this after a win than another wtf loss.

dont go overboard...yes the defense was very good..moreso in the 2nd half than the first but it shouldnt take relying on the defense to beat Columbia. Is the emphasis on defense hurting the offense. It was like a C Vivian Stringer offense out there

kiss gave nothing today..disappointing because its Columbia not Duke. I fear that this is what we will be getting from him this year....sample size enough for me to notice the up and down up and down up and down

I am serious because Columbia stinks and they had a double digit lead against Rutgers ,a power conference opponent and still could have won the game in OT because Rutgers had such difficulty in bounding the ball under pressure .All Rutgers fans should be happy with the win and the kudos should be given to Carter and McConnell for unexpected offense.

Exactly. Especially at a point in the game where once the ball is in play you are going to be fouled instantly. All you need to do is inbound, there is no other goal, just inbound and shoot foul shots.

tolerable when we shoot it 2-19....if we shot 7-19 with that result it is a major issue

But his absolute zero contribution on Offense is really hurting the team, especially because he is one of the few upperclassmen to play. He has to starting taking and making shots, or his PT will diminish.

It’s coaching. When he was in the game, he literally stood at one spot and didn’t move.

I keep seeing a team is horrible and doesn't belong in the game vs RU....let me ask these same fans this same question.

RU will likely be underdogs in 19 or 20 out of 20 B1G games this season, with 4 freshman, a sophomore who is developing into an overachiever in Baker, a self made junior in Eugene who couldn't shoot 2 seasons ago....

If RU is the Columbia of the rest of the B1G opponents, how many games should RU win vs the B1G schedule. Or does a team that's expected on paper to lose 20 out of 20 games, supposed to do what exactly??

So Columbia cant play a couple of good games against a better opponent in RU, but when RU upsets Miami on the road and stays close at Wisconsin, what exactly does that mean??

Folks cant have the argument both ways...you can't complain about not playing well vs teams that aren't as talented and then ask RU to win 6 to 7 games in a B1G schedule this year.

Or what exactly am I missing??

Geo is 13-46/6-26 in his last three games and 23-66/11-38 in his last five. That, more than any other factor in my opinion, informs our recent struggles. He needs to be better. Pike knows it as you can see from him working hard to pump Geo in his post game pressers.
