Committee Chair on Mad Dog Radio-best answer on why no RU

i don’t want that schedule but the commitee rewarding utah state and nevada for playing like two decent teams non conference and losing them is a joke.

Its baked in

They want these high mid majors to get opportunities so they judge them differently. Committee is half non major schools and it shows

RU’s sos was 41.
Stop taking this bs bait of our OOC sos.
It’s total nonsense and the committee is being dishonest. The fact that NO ONE is challenging the committee about our overall SOS or our road wins is telling.
NC state is in because they Played Kansas OOC conference? Really? Did you see who they play in conference? The ACC’s average NET was 110 this year. B1G was 58

It's pretty clear what needs to happen. Our SOS was the worst of any of the schools under consideration. It's weak and makes us look like a bunch of puxxies. Trying to pad our record and not even successful at doing it (see temple this year, lafayette, umass last year). Stop comparing us and our record to the schools that barely made it in this year. Coach needs to show some cajones and prove that we can take on anyone.

I get it. But beat Miami and this is a different story. Hell, don't lose to temple and the hall.

SOS matters...but if we had won all our OOC games and not made it, it might be more compelling. We lost cupcake games. That's on us.

So recency bias matters. As does strength of schedule. Still, if you watched us vs purdue and Michigan not sure that holds water. I guess conference tourneys really do not matter.

Conclusively concluded after the seeding we saw and Nevada not penalized for a third straight loss and nc st not penalized for 3 shitkickings by Clemson

Seton hall plays a legitimate ooc schedule that is worth trying to copy. This past year

Buy games: Monmouth, st peters, wagner, drexel
Q1 games: Iowa, kansas, rutgers
Tourney: memphis, oklahoma, siena
No, let's keep playing schools no ones ever heard of, Sisters of the Poor University. Very impressive!

And they ended up…in the NIT

We need to improve our scheduling but I don’t think 2022-23 SHU is the best example given the circumstances

Fellas, they are basically saying we watched RU play, and in some games they looked terrible ( NW, Nebraska, Michigan). So we left them out...The eye test is real..
Then say that and don’t spin it. Then they should also tell teams without enough good wins or enough against the field they don’t make it either because the eye test is blurry.

Or better yet make the criteria clear and public.

Committee: we don't look at conference standings, just the overall body of work.

Also committee: we don't look at your overall strength of schedule, just your non conference SOS. If you are in a power conference, anyway.

Square those arguments if you can.
Idiots

They got rid of “last 10 games” and have said repeatedly that conference records don’t matter that all games count the same and then the chairman contradicts both with his statement explaining why we’re left out. They factor in Mag’s injury as a negative but then he cites non conference performance which featured two losses with key veteran starters out as another factor. And those games were competitive. I mean, seriously. We could’ve done any number of things to bolster our resume but in this case all that matters is how we stack up with the other bubble teams. 78 of 83 bracketologists had us in because they were following methodology that has been used in the past and what the committee says they follow. Then we get this bs where they ignore the metrics and look at eye test in the last month. Look at how some of those other teams did down the stretch. Nevada lost three straight and they weren’t playing Purdue, Northwestern and Michigan in their last three I can assure you.

Nc state is in because of the acc bias and no loss outside q2

Exactly. "Well yeah but Seton Hall didn't win enough" is going to be the response. But that is exactly what you can say about Rutgers! The schedule doesn't matter (that much)

Isn’t this the supposedly nonexistent “recency bias”:

From Selection Chair : “From Feb 7th on, in several games we had the chance to observe them, and how they looked down the stretch, they had a difficult time. The combination of the two, is why they were left out”
I guess they didn’t watch the Penn State, Michigan or Purdue games. I still think the Minnesota let down by itself is what killed us.

Sure but apparently right or wrong, they don't care.

Why even give them the excuse? Plus quite frankly it's tedious to sit through Columbia/CCSU/Bucknell/Coppin/Sacred Heart/Rider

Trade 3 of those for a tourney or some kind of respectable mid-major at the RAC
All I know is that we had 7 wins against teams that are in the tournament.

If we beat 2 of Miami, Temple, SHU are we in?

It’s OOC wins/losses. If we sweep OOC or win most and still get left out - then the schedule is a problem. But that’s not happening. Two years in a row.

Keep saying 4 Q3 losses. The problem isnt the Q3 games. It’s losing them.

Total BS. Horrible job by the committee

The morale of the story is clean up your act to not leave things in the hands of the committee. We all agree we were snubbed yet there were sloppy things we left hanging and got burnt. Had some issues the previous 3 years especially last year but it didnt burn us this year it did

Cant lose to a horrific Minnesota late in the season

But here is my thing …

Why isn’t the mid majors being looked at the same criteria.

Nevada losses to Oregon

Utah state didn’t beat any power 6 confrences team out of confrence

We lose fo Miami (a 5 seed ) in the last minute on the road ….thsrs better than what a few of the others can claim happened in their best OOC situation …and we did that down a starter

John Cheney and John cal would play anyone anytime to have the OOC to justify their at large bid at 20-10….
Not many doing that now

Hell…Bob Wenzel scheduke seton hall, Missouri , UNLV, Maryland, BYU and Princeton to get enough chances to make an ar large from a mid major

Where is that …MWC?!??

Judge the WHOLE schedule …not just the OOC
Exactly...and doesn't the NET factor for that in some way?

It's clear they made a subjective decision and this is their weak ass excuse

Very true. When leaving this thing to low functioning humans there will be mistakes. You have to eliminate the possibility of a screw up.

Stupid reasoning. So what if Edey and two other Purdue starters got killed in a plane crash two weeks ago (God Forbid), and they lost their last ten games. Would they have been left out because they wouldn't do well in the Tournament?
Absolutely they would have been kept out. Because the jackass in charge said so...it must be true!

No, but they wouldn;t have been a Number 1 seed.

Simple fact is selection can’t be arbitrary. Lay out your criteria in importance order and don’t make everyone guess what you feel like is important one year to the next.

And apply it equally to every team. I don’t care if your Duke or NW SE middle of nowhere state.

Agreed. Last two years we coulda been left out also and we woulda been upset but it woulda been reasonable. Can’t lose at home to seton hall. Can’t blow that game against Minnesota. Can’t blow that game against Miami up late. Can’t sleepwalk vs NW in the last game. Can’t get blown out by Michigan and nebreska at home. We had our chances to be a lock regardless of schedule and injuries

First Question asked by Mad Dog and Steve Torre was Why Rutgers was not included…it was a very direct answer, that should be printed and pasted on the Coaching staffs office door! Scheduling matters a lot, winning big games in non conference matters most.

”Their Non-Conference schedule, and non-conference wins. The committee looked hard at that. They were trying to find something they could grab on to. But for non-conference, as it related to success, it was lacking”

he continued regarding Mag injury,

’” From Feb 7th on, in several games we had the chance to observe them, and how they looked down the stretch, they had a difficult time. The combination of the two, is why they were left out”
God damn, the selection process is even dumber than I imagined lol

Supposed that did happen -they should still be a top seed?
Because they were before the injuries?

That makes even less sense.

I’ll be surprised if Coach Pike switches it up. His stubbornness is a strength and a weakness and I like where the program is at, so I don’t know…

"Several games" surrrrre. Bet they didn't "observe" the comeback vs. PSU when Simpson took over in the 2nd half. Or the Mich tourney game we handily won with Simpson starting. Or the dog fight we had with Purdie, with Simpson starting (and the refs crushing us). They are clowns.

Issue isn’t OOC schedule..it’s bad losses—plain and simple
We lost to teams we shouldn’t

If we somehow closed out MIami it may have done enough to overcome some of the bad
Ones but the committee is all about clean resumes.

The committee is ****ing inconsistent and doesn’t give a shit who you beat. Honest to god, it may have been better is we beat Minnesota and Temple instead of Purdue

Agreed! He gave 2 reasons OOC and flow of the team after Mags injury. Umass Lowell pst in conference tournament. Miami , and we’re always going to play the local colleges. Seton hall etc
Flow of the team. Pike waited too long on the lineup change. Goes to DS after msu we win 4 games and avoid season crushing losse bringing our Q3/4 losses to 4 . No team in history of tournament has gotten in with 4 losses . Some have with 3. Ok tweak the OOC all for it but make right coaching decisions, lineups, and don’t blow leads to horrible teams and we’re in no bubbles needed
