Because sometimes "deals' are made "behind closed doors." So the "others" can offer - that's their choice - but if UM has decided on Pinstripe (which I could VERY well see) then that''s that.
They have a HUGE alumni base - with lots of $$$$ - within 100 miles of Yankee Stadium AND their fans don't give 2 shits about things like "the weather." Wouldn't surprise me if they sold more tickets than us, ND or Cuse ever did (especially after beating OSU again).
None of us know, so it's all speculation: but my own guess would be that UM has no particular wish to go to the Pinstripe. A Pinstripe Bowl appearance would be good for alumni in the area, but NYC is an expensive place to stay for those coming from out-of-town, the late December weather is unpredictable, and it's undoubtedly known by now that Yankee Stadium is not a good location for a football game.
I get where you're coming from, BUT, "where there's smoke...." and this seems like an odd "rumor" to just pop up out of nowhere IMHO.

It was a rumor when everyone expected Michigan to lose to OSU in probably not a close game.
I don’t see bowls above the Pinstripe passing, and I don’t see a bunch of coaches/players in a cold place like Michigan accepting the school passing on a warm weather bowl invite to go to NYC.

The other change to keep in mind is that if Michigan lost yesterday, two bowls had to take Iowa and Illinois before Michigan could be picked. Now, they only can’t be picked ahead of Illinois.
Also, before the ACC’s bad day yesterday, there was a much better chance Indiana was in the mix for B1G bowl tie-ins, pushing Michigan even further down to the Pinstripe.
The Pinstripe rumor wasn’t crazy last week, but the idea should be dead now.
So the "rumor" is from last week or is that your assumption (TODAY was the first I've heard, tbh). Anywway.....here's what I'm looking at:
(locks) Playoffs - Ducks, Bucks, Nits and our bitch (IU)
then let's assume:
Reliaquest - Iowa
Citrus - Illinois
So that leaves RU, UM, Minny and Huskers to split Nashville, Charlotte, Phoenix and Da' Boogie Down (with SC going to Alamo (never been) and Huskies to San Diego (haven't been since 2010).

With Oregon, Penn St., Ohio St, and Indiana now locks for the Playoffs (assuming Commitee ranking is in line with Coach and AP Polls), that would take the Detroit Bowl out of the picture. 6 Big 10 teams with 6-6 and greater records and 7 non-Playoff Bowl slots with Detroit Bowl picking last of the 7 Bowls. This excludes USC and Washington affiliated with Pac 12 Bowls.
The only thing I don't want to see is Rutgers headed to Detroit against a MAC opponent. Phoenix against a Big 12 opponent such as Baylor as an example is fine and would be a good matchup.

We were all able to drive to our Bowl game 12 months ago.
Flying to Phoenix or Nashville is easy.
Hopefully most can do it…. As we improve we won’t have the ‘luxury’ of driving to the lower seeded Bowl games.

2) Pinstripe takes Huskers
3) Nashville/Charlotte take RU over Minny (no brainer IMHO re: ticket sales and tv #'s)
4) Minny to Rate
or
1) Charlotte/Nashville takes Michigan
2) Pinstripe takes Huskers
3) RU says "NO" to Rate/Minny accepts
4) RU ends up in Nash/Charlotte

The most annoying thing for games on the 26 or 31 is the ridiculous cost of travel. Charlotte flights were reasonable
When I flew there for a long weekend last year I don't think it was much more than $500
Citi Field, The Amazing's Bowl, for the years were not eligible for the Pinstripe. LOL
Schiano’s dream is play a bowl at Tottenville HS with a tailgate party under the Outerbridge. Then we will truly be NYC’s team
And driving to Charlotte is pretty easy (did it a few times a year for about 20 years, while my sister was living there) and I like driving, but hate flying, so Charlotte gets my vote, especially since the date is better for me.
Assuming the weather cooperates, driving to Charlotte is an inexpensive option. We had a strong RU contingent at the VTech game, and I think that we would bring a good crowd to North Carolina.

That is the one we took our kids on a Xmas day flight. Did presents in the morning and flew out early afternoon- had a nice XMas dinner in Arizona.
The day before the bowl- took a road trip- forget the road but it is a scenic 8 hour trip if you do the full circle. We didn’t do the whole thing- stopped at an old western town and then an old restaurant about 3 hours out of Phoenix that was an old dive with walls filled with license plates.,,
Just a ton of fun.
Easy but expensive ..... $800+ to AZ and $500 to TN.
Drive is only 9.5 hours to Charlotte or Detroit and 13 hour drive to Nashville.
Would rather drive . I do FL with no hotel stays. Drove to Papa John's Bowl way back in the day.

I agree with you on this with the exception of indy being a playoff lock. I think they are in but who knows how the committee is going to view their schedule. The sec will be lobbying for an extra team and indy does not have the pedigree of some of the teams about to be left out. If they don't make it then I am worried we are back in play for the Detroit game.
We'll find out on Tuesday night. Believe that the Coaches and AP Polls got it pretty much correct and if that's the case Indiana sneaks in. 1 loss to what will be a Playoff team and everybody else they dominated. It's the SEC that's weakened this year and their 4th place teams all with 3 losses have some terrible losses, including Alabama getting blown out by Oklahoma and Ole Miss losing to the likes of Kentucky and Florida, middling teams. Can't see the ACC getting more than 2 schools in and Miami is in big trouble. As for the Big 12 it will be 1 school.
Easy drive 287 to 78 to 81 to 77, never have to get off the interstates. The stadium is right off the exit. The worst part of the drive would be River Road in Piscataway
Feel like I'm one of the only ones pulling for Phoenix.
