Current Bowl Possibilities

How I see it

- Citrus - Illinois
- Reliaquest - Iowa
- Mayo - Michigan
- Music City - Minnesota
- Pinstripe - Nebraska
- Rate - Rutgers
- Detroit - goes away since not enough qualifiers

Now if Indiana somehow gets screwed and doesn't make the CFP, they would get Citrus, and everyone would move down a notch. But even then, I think the Rate bowl would still take RU. Really wish Coach Schiano kept that TO in his pocket. Citrus Bowl would have been amazing.
I think you nailed it. I guess it’s possible that Music City takes RU over Minn, but I think the other 4 are locked in as you have them.

But that’s still “the City”, and it would have been a popular destination for something like this, a Super Bowl or a Final Four.
In fact, the NFL did schedule a Super Bowl there, no doubt to build public support. The stadium was also supposed to be the site of the 2012 Olympics. But the local authorities decided they didn't want it. One good thing: it led the city to focus on the Mets' proposal to build Citi Field.

I so much wanted to see that West side stadium - could have been great for pro football (as much as I love NJ, the pro teams are still, fundamentally, NYC teams) and a great destination for a major bowl game right in the heart of Manhattan.
It would have been great for everyone except the people who actually lived there, and that is why it wasn’t approved by the zoning board, with Sheldon Silver and Joe Bruno voting No. Traffic would have been a nightmare. There would have been no tailgating. It’s better located in the Meadowlands.

Hear hear. Beside, real estate in Manhattan is too scarce and valuable for any of it to go to a stadium that (at best) would be used half the year. If NYC was going to have a new football stadium, the logical thing would have been to build it in Queens not far from where Citifield is. That's connected by the #7 subway to Manhattan, a fairly short trip that I'm sure many of you have done. But the Jets insisted they would only accept a Manhattan stadium and so they got nothing.

There’s a paywall here…what’s it say? Music city or Tampa I assume…
No paywall for me--snippets pasted:

9-3 Illinois would be the likely choice to land at the Citrus Bowl .

The ReliaQuest Bowl would have the choice of taking 8-4 Iowa or choosing Michigan, Minnesota or Rutgers. Factoring in fan travel and potential viewership numbers in cooperation with the game’s bowl TV partner, ESPN, the Wolverines are in a more favorable position over the Gophers and Scarlet Knights.

If the ReliaQuest Bowl winds up choosing the Hawkeyes, Michigan would fall to the Music City Bowl in Nashville

Updated projections from ESPN and CBS Sports have the Wolverines playing an SEC team in Nashville on Dec. 30, while Brett McMurphy of The Action Network has the Music City Bowl taking Minnesota over Michigan, dropping the Wolverines to the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 28 at Yankee Stadium in New York
.

Which like the new Yankee Stadium were originally both supposed to have retractable roofs.

Pinstripe inside is a horse of a different color. Still eh, but a little better.

Agreed. I was only commenting about what I would've loved as a football fan.

So....he says "Iowa...Mich, Minn, RU".....then he eliminates Iowa from the convo to say Mich over RU/Minn....THEN he brings Iowa back into the convo in the next paragraph (all the time Iowa has the better conference record and, IIRC, unless a "deal is made" Iowa is automatically going to Tampa; 2 best conference records, after playoffs, go to Orlando/Tampa which is why we were headed to Orlando with a W over Illini and MSU).

This is more-or-less PURE SPECULATION at this point as are all the rest of the PREDICTIONS out there right now (which is why, for the most part, they also choose their words very carefully (other than Lanni's subject heading yesterday SMDH....).

*** my guess is the real "rumors" start floating out after the playoff rankings are announced.

BTW - I think (could be wrong) 3 of these guys had us going to the same bowl game when we were 4-2, 4-3, 4-4, 5-4, 6-4, 6-5 and now at 7-5.....lol

I don't recall NYS ever having a "roof" in the plans (retractable or otherwise)??? The West Side Stadium absolutely.

That's why I'm not paying much attention to any of this until after this weekend.

We'll know on Sunday. BCS Playoff Pairings are announced at NOON (looks like the show is 12-3:30.) EST Sunday. I assume the remaining games will be announced shortly thereafter as the 1st bowl game (Salute to Veterans formerly Camellia Bowl) is Sat the 14th.

You aren’t wrong. The guys at CBS are definitely pissed they can’t still project RU to the Detroit Bowl. I think they were projecting that when RU was 4-0.

Yup....Jerry "Rosey" Palm (and her 5 sisters)!!! You're 100% correct!

As RUNuts stated, all of these are press related prognostications and predictions and we will know soon enough. I want to know asap to plan; but can’t.

For me, Iowa and Michigan will likely trade off between Nashville and Tampa. Illinois to Citrus. Question is: is it between Charlotte and Phoenix for RU? Nebraska supposedly wanting Phoenix or Nashville - but Pinstripe has to pick somebody and I don’t see RU or Minny going back (again).

Nebby should go to Pinstripe IMO, that’s where they are the optimal fit and have never been. Should they be given a warm weather bowl instead would have damaging implications for RU or Minny. That’s why I see Mayo and Rate splitting RU and Minny. No way will we go to Music City or Tampa with Michigan and Nebby available- and I don’t see Minny going to Music City. Iowa to Mayo and Nebby to Music City is possible, with Michigan in Tampa…but that leaves RU and Minny having to split Pinstripe and Rate. Again I don’t see that happening- though I assume it’s possible somehow.

As long as it’s Rate or Mayo I’m fine: I don’t see any bowl taking us above that but I can be wrong as I usually am:-).

Exciting times!

My understanding is that Mayo picks over Music City. Am I wrong? The lower choice between those two is our only hope of getting out of Rate. Again, they'd have to choose us over Minnesota and Nebraska which seems like a long shot.

I was looking at Music City Bowl History. In the early 2000s, Minnesota played there four out of five years. Crazy. Nebraska played there around 8 years ago. So you could make the argument they should give RU a shot since they've never been.

Unfortunately hearing that - likely (there's a playoff poll coming out tomorrow THEN another at NOON Sunday) - nobody will know where they're going until Sunday in regards to RU/Mich/Neb/Minny. That cold change but it's where things sit for now.

Rate is last out of the 4 (Music City/Mayo/Pinstripe and Rate) IIRC? No legitimate reason for a game in Nashville or Charlotte to pick Minny over RU.

- we'll sell more tickets (allotment or otherwise)....THINK about this: our last REAL bowl trip (see: non-last minute/COVID or Pinstripe) was in 2012 when we went to Orlando!!! This fan base is STARVED for a good location/date trip!!! Minnesota, OTOH, has been to Meineke, Texas, Citrus, Quick Lane, Holiday, Quick Lane, Outback, Rate, Pinstripe, Quick Lane during the same time frame.

- fill more hotel rooms
- spend more $$$
- same record AND beat them head-to-head
- Schiano trumps Fleck
- Chopping Wood trumps Rowing Your Boat

The counter argument:
- Minnesota has a winning record in conference. Rutgers doesn't.
- Minnesota has the same record despite playing a much harder schedule.
- Minnesota's power index rating 31. Rutgers 52.

I'm not saying you're wrong. If RU gets into Mayo or Music, I'll be the happiest guy on the board. I just don't see us getting the nod...and its all because of a timeout that should have never been called.

I don't think we are going to Detroit with our finish and cant go to the PS bowl...Sucks that we blew the Ill game but it is what it is- I am good with where we end up.

I wonder about Michigan- they are always a huge travel team but will their fans actually travel after a year like this one for them?

Detroit - OUT for now unless IU drops out of the playoffs
Pinstripe - NO RU this year

Maybe I've got some Scarlet glasses on, but I don't see why MN would be more desirable than Rutgers for the Mayo Bowl. Gotta believe we'd bring more fans to Charlotte then MN.
We'd sell more tickets (allotment or otherwise), fill more rooms, spend more $$$ and draw more "eyes." I said it before: between DC and Atlanta we likely have 30x (if not more) the alumni than The Gophers do, flights are a dime-a-dozen from NYC to Miami into Charlotte, and the drive is easy. So unless someone in Charlotte is getting major knob from someone in Minnesota this is a serious head-scratcher IF true.
