Watched Rhode Island play Davidson tonight. RI played good defense against a high scoring Davidson team and although they lost, played with intensity. Dan Hurley very active with the team. Also saw Jim Carr and David Cox on the bench.

I think one way to judge a coach is against his predecessor. Jim Baron's last six years better than Danny's last four. Baron got a really raw deal.

Hurley is a maniac. Good chance he eventually gets the program in the news for the wrong reason. Very high risk.
Frank Martin makes Mike Rice look like Jeb Bush (low energy) South Carolina is a top 10 team. Win baby.
But it probably will be someone else

I don't mean that he's a maniac on the court. I'm just thinking about what led to Eddie Jordan being hired and Dan Hurley doesn't seem the way to go.

Also, Frank Martin is really cool when it's not on game day.

Danny's not coming here. I going with our AD tries to hire his friend Amaker, and then we hires Sendek

This is a joke. People are still pushing for Danny yet his team that some thought could win the A-10 is only like a game over .500.

Not pushing for Danny here but his team has dealt with as many injuries as Rutgers and is a game over .500.

Didn't Danny have a nervous breakdown when he played at Seton Hall? In all seriousness,I'm not sure he could handle what it would take to turn this $hit show around.

isn't recruiting a huge question mark with Sendek?

from all I could find (forums, team blogs, etc) there is common theme with Sendek:
-Great guy, great person
-Very good coach. got the most out of his teams year after year.
-High character guy , demands the same of his players. unfortunately these days some 'give' is required, not sure was there and connections questionable with some players.
-was in tough spot out there with the small hoops fanbase. could not compete with Sean Miller for local guys and did not fare well in LA vs biggies there.

no real point here, just concern for his ability to bring guys in

Brought in Julius Hodge at NC State and James Harden at ASU.

Herb Sendek did not 'get' James Harden.

Harden followed his high school coach to ASU. ASU hired him as an assistant. AND Harden's mom was already moving into that area so he wanted to stay clse to her.

Sendek got him - Larry Brown got Danny Manning - Lappas got Tim Thomas - he did what was necessary

One difference is that the guy that Sendek hired as an assistant coach (Harden's HS coach) is an actual assistant coach (went from ASU to Penn and currently is an assistant at Rice).

I don't think RI ever played this year with only 6 or 7 scholarship players or had 4 scholarship guys out at one time. They also are not playing 18 games in the BIG. It isn't even close.
Right - they would be us by 22 ponts

Sendek has recruited just fine and apparently has his own coaching tree...he hires great assistants. If Hobbs gives him the budget I have no doubt we will finally have a worthy staff for the first time since the 70s

they have at least 3 players out which has impacted their A-10 chances and yes they are only 14-13 but not 6-21, injuries suck and as is roster management which Eddie did a poor job with transfers out. Hurley is still keeping his head above water at least, that's what you do when you have injuries, not talking about spirit wins and players giving effort...we have a program that drowned

Agreed. URI is 15-13 with a losing record in the A10 in Hurley's 3rd year. Not too impressive.

Jordan's best win total is 12 -

Rhode Island finished 2nd in the A10 with 23-10 record.

He beat GW twice that year, and Jordan loses by 30.

I don't expect him to come here but it wouldnt surprise me if he leaks his name to get yet another raise. And I'm fine with him not coming but he's much better than Jordan.

For the love of God - Jordan should NOT be the point of comparison for ANY new hire!!!!! My point is that Danny has been far less impressive than I thought he would be in year 3. I hope we can do better.

I don't see the question being who's better, Jordan or Danny. For this board, you have to hit a home run -- in the first inning. No more mediocrity. Win B1G....NC....high NCAA seed. That kind of stuff. And Danny seems mediocre. A-10 is a nice league, but under .500 in the league after 3 (?) years? He's had the time, the publicity, the connections. Besides being in the B1G, why does one think he'll succeed here when he really hasn't proven himself in URI? I think the red flags are starting to come out.

OK he's better than a lot of names in our wheelhouse. Maybe not top candidate but better than the guys we'll have to call once Amaker and Lonergan decline. Bet on that.

Lonergan
Amaker
Sendek
Greenberg

Then you can argue for Hurley.

Masiello
Schmidt
Will Brown
Pikiell
Boyle
K. Rice
Toole
Keatts

Again no one's saying he's the top candidate.

People want King Rice and he's done less than Danny

Scratch - Andy Toole - Bo Mo is 9-20 & #314 - and he's from the Mike Rice tree

Add - Pat Skerry - Towson 19-10 / 140
Jimmy Pastos - Siena 19-10/106
Matt Brady - James Madison 20-9/ 74 (& from Haddonfield)

Patsos is nuts. I'd scratch him too. I was mainly listing names to prove that Hurley is a better candidate than the guys we'd have to call if Lonergan/Sendek pass.

I don't expect Masiello to get a look either because he lied on his résumé. Not sure we can go there.

Mike Rice has made everyone gun shy

I'd hire Hurley, King Rice or Pastos. Big difference between jump around on court and firing basketballs in practice

somebody beat me to the 'Patsos is nuts' , guy has legendary post game press conferences

Hurley had his chance when he was hot.
He cooled off ( injury excuse unacceptable ) and now undeserving of consideration.
The previous RI coach had some successful just before his team had a terrible 7-24 season causing him to be fired. Going 97-71
But Baron's 162-166 record for his 11 years as the Rams MBB HC isn't something that denotes a winner.
Danny's time as the RI HC isn't blowing people away anymore.
Rutgers probably dodged a bullet when Hurley overplayed his hand and had to walk away.
Some might say RU walked into a shotgun shell when Eddie was hired, but Hurley looks like
he would have failed to make the RU MBB program a winner and harder to dump.

RUman why are you so hung on King Rice? You know he's a ticking timebomb.
He's won 23 games at Monmouth. MONMOUTH!
He's beaten UCLA, ND USC and Georgetown at MONMOUTH
He is far from a ticking time bomb. He will take the job.

My top 3 would be Lonergan, Amaker and Hurley. King Rice is my next group
