Email Hobbs and Baumgartner regarding Battle of the Bronx

Sent my email this morning. Someone mentioned that they give more than the minimum for priority points, but they are going to reduce what they give because of this. I stated the same thing to them. Hobbs is acting like an elitist academic who is tone deaf to reality if he thinks that this is in any way a good deal for RU. This was never a done deal either. Hobbs at least confirmed that when this first came up. He said that it was his decision, and he will determine if it is good for RU or not.

>> Fans want Rutgers brand spread; to be New York's college team
>> A home game is scheduled at Yankee Stadium
>> ???
>> Fans blow up Hobbs and Baumgartner's inboxes with complaints

Are they ever going to do this again? We have been there already...3x already.

And enough with lumping the Bronx in with "Greatest City in the world" crap. LOL

If this game was being played at the stadium that was supposed to be in Midtown, I could see some of your point.

Lighten up Francis,

The bronx isnt lumped together with new york city, it actually is part of new york city

The Big 10 is making us schedule games in NYC. They want the NYC media talking up Big 10 sports. Playing games at an iconic landmark like Yankee Stadium is a marketing ploy. I think Hobbs knows it is a poor venue for a college football game. This is about dollars, advertising, exposure etc. It's a marketing gimmick.

The same reason Tennessee scheduled the Va Tech game at Bristol Speedway. They put the field for that game in the track's infield. The fans appeared to be a mile away from the action.
This is just not true. This was debunked by Delaney himself in interviews. He has repeatedly said that the B10 never asks a member team to put themselves at a disadvantage by scheduling a home game off campus or at a neutral site. It's purely up to the school, and how they perceive the benefits. They are not treating RU differently in scheduling home games than anyone else.

I thought it was established RU has no out available to them? It was signed. sealed, and delivered before Hobbs took over.
It was established by the usual circular conversation that is common on this board. One person suggests that something is true and others somewhat remember the conversation and repeat it as fact later. Hobbs himself said that it was not a done deal, and that he would decide if it was in RU's best interest or not. As an Academic, he seems to think that this is a good idea.

Ok thanks. My tiny brain can't possibly keep all the yes, no, and maybes around here straight.

Only to rubes not from around here. LOL

The City is the Battery to 96th Street. Although some will said that boundary has moved a little north.

Oh got it...so brooklyn isnt new york city either...

And all the firefighters in the bronx arent new york city firefighters then

Well funny you should mention that as some Bronx guys think that already. And vice versa for the Brooklyn dudes. LOL

But they both agree that Staten Island guys don't count. LOL

Then again, it is Maryland, which for the foreseeable future, will always be the least desirable conference game on our schedule.

You want to have the fan base go completely bonkers, try scheduling PSU at MetLife.
RU Maryland is going to become a big time rivalry. Two schools trying to climb the ladder in the BIG .Two comparable schools that often recruit the same kids ,there's a lot at stake.
I don't mind playing in Yankee Stadium, I'm not crazy about losing the good seats I have at HPSS.
It should be reciprocal and Maryland should play us in Baltimore.
As a fan base we say we're New Yorks College Team lets have a strong showing and sell out Yankee stadium.

It's amazing that Tennessee and VT can get 156,990 people go to a football game in a freaking racetrack where thousands upon thousands of people had to travel 113 miles from campus and had terrible sight lines because they were so far from the field. 156,990!!!! Yet you guys are complaining this much about a game in Yankee Stadium in the greatest city in the world? Jump on a damn train and subway and get dropped off at the door of the stadium and watch YOUR team play a B1G game. So what that you're a little more inconvenienced.

It amazes me that anyone thinks this is comparable.

1. Bristol Motor Speedway has many acres of tailgating and an a campground on sight. Yankee Stadium has none.
2. Bristol Motor Speedway had room for > 150,000 fans. Much larger than either team's home stadium. Yankee stadium seats less than either HPSS or Byrd stadium.
3. The game at BMS was a once in a lifetime thing. Rutgers has played several games at Yankee Stadium in recent memory. Our fans are well aware of it's shortcomings.

That you have to explain it is just as amazing. LOL

I will send an email, not in the hopes that this game is moved home, but to let them know we don't want any more after this

I think this is the best we can hope for.
Exactly. This game is scheduled and they aren't changing it. But they need to understand nobody really wants any more of them.

You have to do things like this every few years to build the brand, get the media attention..create buzz for recruiting.. I think in the future, when Ash rebuilds the team and we can win some B10 games,,you will see a few B10 games moved to Yankee stadium, meadowlands every few years...
I like the idea..you think anyone would be talking about RU vrs Maryland at Rutgers next season on radio, social media,B10 network,,yesterday,if the game was scheduled at Piscataway?
The Meadowlands, in a football stadium, would be tolerable. Although I still want us to play our home games at home. But Yankee stadium sucks for every possible reason.

Also, not sure what kind of buzz is created when 80% of the fanbase is very opposed to playing in Yankee stadium. Sounds like negative buzz which we don't need.

I was on the phone with someone from RU athletics earlier today on a different matter. When we finished discussing what he had called about, I respectfully voiced my opinion about this game. I gave him the reasons I oppose it (tailgating, seating, etc.) and asked him to pass my comments along to Hobbs. He said he would but seemed genuinely surprised that some fans do not like this idea.

They just announced a wrestling match...its too late ..save your emails
No - email anyway. Nothing can change next year's game. But we certainly can make it very clear that the fanbase is very unhappy about it.

I also think the fanbase should boycott the game. Poor attendance sends a very clear signal. Is that unfair to the players and coaching staff? Yep. But it's hard to pin that on the fanbase. The fanbase has been pretty clear about not wanting games there. The admin is to blame.

Bite me. I'm not going. And I could couldn't care less what Tennessee and VT do.

Edit: Doh! I hate when people incorrectly use could as I just did. [laughing]

Good, that sort of thing will get noticed. I prefer to offer a carrot instead of a stick for the 2017 game, but the fan-base needs to send a clear signal and money always helps in that regard.

Which is why everybody should email them.

That she gets it...

Anyway...it got a lot of AirPlay on BTN live. Hosts all talking about going and getting NY pizza.
My question is, does the added talk and AirPlay outweigh our dissatisfaction?
Yes , New York style pizza at Yankee Stadium for a paltry sum of $8 .50 plus a large soda for an additional $10.00 ...but it's real N.Y. style

This place is not "Yankee Stadium". The only legend who played there is Jeter.

<cough>

My gut tells me that they meant being in the Bronx outside the stadium. A couple of them are from the NYC area.

The best way to combat this in the future is to deduct the cost of the Maryland game from your yearly donation .... to include tickets x number + tolls + parking say...$ 200.00 x 10,000 season ticket holders...

As mikemarc1 posted above can you provide a link to his comments?

I'm not suggesting he didn't say it, but I would like to read exactly what he said with regards to neutral site games. We all know the reason we were invited was due to our proximity to NYC and our potential to become the NYC media darlings if we can at some point pull off another 2006 type season. That and the NJ/NYC TV sets.

Sent email and included in it I said that this game MUST NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE SEASON TICKET PACKAGE
Great idea. I will do the same, along with a donation offer if they figure out a way to get out of the game.

It was a record setting and the biggest thing was neither team gave up a home game for it.

Anyone with half a brain regarding sports business understands the industry is a unique place due to the TV paradigm shift. The viewer at home is significantly more important than the viewer in the stadium. The people who invest most financially take a back seat to the collective group of lurkers on their couch.

If it wasn't for seeing my old roommates and the opportunity to visit new brunswick at tailgates, I wouldn't have tickets. I have been going to less and less Eagles games every year because they don't have the pull the alumni aspect of college football does. Plenty of times Friday rolls around I think "God, I'd love to just take it easy and catch the game (multiple games) on the couch" - knowing once I get to the banks I'll have a great time has kept me in the game so far.

Basically, we just have to get over it because this is the way the business works. Your emails don't hold much weight any longer because what's best for the TV contract is best for the school. You will continue to lose the battle.

I guess.

My interest in the RU football program is pretty wrapped up in the entire home-game experience. If I were to stop going to home games w/friends w/the tailgating and so forth, I'd probably stop watching games on TV soon after.

But I have no idea what the metrics are on that stuff. I wonder how many fans of the program would remain interested if the home games went away.

I'm not sure what the answer would be to your last question. Rutgers is unique. On a general level, teams, especially pro, would be just fine, considering the lions share of the fan base (literally millions) don't attend a home game each season.

I don't know either.

I'm sure lots and lots of RU FB fans mostly watch games on TV (many post on this board). Agreed that pro teams are very different. And RU is somewhat unique because our media market is saturated with sports entertainment options.

Huh. Now I'm really interested in learning the RU FB program demographics. Who watches and how often? Who attends home games and how many? What's the percentage of overlap? Etc.

Rutgers is unique and funky in many ways.

2006 won us nothing yet looked what happened?

I can't think of another school that only has to win to get what we got. If we ever WIN or God willing WIN ...look out because the coverage then will make 2006 look like the Targum.

What's amazing is how much some in this fan base is crying about it. No one is asking you to go to Afghanistan. It's Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. No one is forcing anyone to go. Hopefully it is part of the season ticket package so we can really see every one cry on here.

If we have to play at Yankee Stadium, can they at least take down the foul poles? Every time I have been there, they are always in the way.
