First of all this game was a war. It was as ugly as your best friend's sister in terms of offense but make no mistake, these were two very evenly matched teams in terms of ability and talent scrapping and scrumming in a battle for 2nd place in the league. It seems like many of the RU-Illinois games are these exciting slugfest whether low scoring or high scoring. Everyone remembers the 3 OT game at the RAC with Corey Sanders, the season ending win at the RAC that effectively knocked Illinois out of the NCAA tourney and the OT loss at Illinois last year and now yet another classic down to the wire game in what to me I see as RU's closest matched rival in the Big 10 play. Look we can be disappointed we did not win this game but these things are going to happen. This league is very evenly matched. It is very tough to steal one on the road, the window of opportunity is small. RU was right there. Tie game, two minutes to go...you cannot really ask for anything more in this league. It came down to two minutes and Illinois made the plays to win and RU didn't. Its a fine line isn't it and it will not be the first game that goes this way, you just hope that its RU making the plays the next time.

Well RU had done a mercurial job in winning two league games without Geo Baker but its clear in this game its absence in the end couldnt be overcome. Geo thrives in those late game situations. Everything goes through him. We wouldn't be relying on a freshmen to make a big assist and maybe with Geo in our offensive production would have been alot stronger. Smart people knew sooner or later not having him in the lineup would be an issue and today was the day. Our guards with the exception of Young simply struggled to get into any flow. There were too many forced jump shots taken and too many ill advised drives among the trees. I have no doubt that Geo would have had a more settling effect as leader.

As to specifically why RU lost. Well as usual its rebounding. I note at halftime that RU led 24-23 but down 9-4 on the offensive end. Cockburn already had 10 at the break and Myles absence because of foul trouble was the reason. Still even without Myles, RU led by 3 at the break. but seriously Illinois wasnt going to shoot 19% in the 2nd half, RU had to be kicking itself for not taking greater advantage offensivley. Now lets just say both teams played outstanding defense but there were also a ton of bricks put up by both teams. It seemed as if Illinois just won every scrum though and a key stretch which I think changed the game for Illinois was at 28-22 where they won the rebounding all 3 times on possession and was able to tie the game at 28. I think it really kept them into the game and seemed like their offense also got better after that. I think at one point, Illinois had a 14-3 lead in offensive rebounds and was winning 18-9 in the 2nd half. When you are giving your opponent double the opportunities you can see why even with their shooting woes, the Illini were in decent shape. Myles picking up that third foul..silly was just dreadful. He has to be smarter than that. I will not even go into his penchant for getting called for those screens. Myles needs to understand to keep his focus and limit the frustration. We see when Myles came back in he was able to get some layups and Young was keeping RU alive with the 3 ball.

Admittedly I thought RU was done for at 42-38 with about 5 to play but Caleb stayed with it to put in a miss and the Jacob rained down a 3 and then Mathis hit one as well...suddenly RU up 46-44 and wait we really could win this. RU made a couple of crucial stops and then at 46-44 if only Harper didnt slip there we could have had some seperation with 2 minutes to go..did he slip or was he fouled, will have to see the replay but damn that was a big turning point. On the other end, Feliz hit the jumper in transition..a potential 4 point swing there. Then a timeout and Paul inserted into the game, obviously this was a set called play and something was supposed to happen where we would all be ravng Paul, Myles, and Pike when it happened....but it was obvious it wasnt going to happen, Paul was in trouble and didnt bail on it and forced a pass to Myles that went off his foot. @ straight empty possession. Meanwhile great job by Underwood of having Dousonmu drive in and predictably get fouled. Then Myles called for illegal screen...third straight empty possession. Next Illinois possession, they miss a 3 but a HUGE rebound by Georgi and that 2nd chance basket by Dousonmu basically was all she wrote. RU couldnt connect on jumpers and inexplicably didnt even foul down 54-51 with 4 seconds left

Will not go individually because its evident most players just had a really bad offensive game but the brightest spot was Jacob Young again, under control and making big time baskets....6-14, 4-7 from 3 , 16 points and zero turnovers in 27 minutes. Lets not downplay what we are seeing from him. This is a tremendous leap again for him...3 big time games in a row. I think Doucoure gets a mention because of his 6 boards in 9 minutes stepping into his role...all you can ask for him. I think Carter had moments too but its clearly he is ineffective vs Illinois on the boards.

Bottom line, Illinois made plays to win, Rutgers did not. Illinois won crunch time and their strong rebounding put them in position to win the game down the stretch. RU could have won this game but at this level, close gets you nowhere. Not sure if Pikiell could have done anything different this game. Its clear that the shots were not going and Myles was not focused this game. Without Geo there are just so many buttons that Pike can push. This team layed it all out defensively in another sterling efffort but the bugaboo of struggling with shooting once again bit them. Tough to win on the road when you have 3 guards getting just 11 points and your big man is a non factor. Illinois deserved the win. Tip your hat to them.

Some learning lessons today that you need 100% focus in league play. No one feels sorry for you and no one is going to hand anything to you. Something to be aware of for Indiana. RU can get beat by Indiana at the RAC. Things can change in a hurry. You can look like top 25 one day and 10th place the next. Its a big game because every game is a big game. You lose won battle and onto the next. This is what cannibalism looks like in league play. Only the strongest survive at the end but we will not know that until March. Be happy as fans that RU is in a position that shows that they have clearly taken the next step overall as a program. Its about winning the war in March, you may lose battles its how you bounce back from those losses that will determine if you still have a heartbeat in March

Refs killed us in the crucial moment throw out everything else we did well and not so well the rest of game (mostly good) hard to win when the ref takes the ball away and says go home.

lmfao..no stop it with the refs, our fanbase needs to grow up or its going to be embarrassingly around here every loss.

I mean it happened. Pretty hard to ignore it. Rutgers tried to overcome that big dip in win % likelihood but fell short.

BAC blinders on as to fouls. In a close physical game like this it is impossible to not acknowledge, as the announcers did, the foul discrepancy. Rutgers was not in the bonus. Miles has to be smarter but where are the same calls on Illinois? The phantom call bailing out Illinois with a second left. No foul on Harper shooting underneath? Giving RU a flop warning when Illinois clearly pushed off.

It is okay to note that in a close game refs matter and that it was indeed a key to the game.

Usually agree with your recaps, but disagree on a number of fronts. First, Illinois did not deserve to win any more than we did and I thought it also can be easily argued we are the better team. Was sent a note from my Illinois friend from their stats department that it was the first time in their history , they won a game scoring less than 60 points, shooting less than 30% from the field, and less than 20% from three point range . So they got lucky to win.
Second, we could have won this game without Geo. Jacob hit those big threes that Geo hits late in the game so we still got that and he had no turnovers . Yes Geo would have helped but it is not like Geo hasn’t put up a 1-10 shooting game.
Third, I think Coach did a great job navigating Myles foul problems and got the best out of Carter and Duke but the failure to get Ron on the block or allowing him to drive down the stretch was a fail. Putting Paul back in with 2:09 after he was sitting at the scorer’s table for 4 minutes and then coming out of the timeout and not going Jacob and Ron in a 2 man game was surprising to say the least . If he was trying for lob to Myles from Paul ( Iguess that was the play) , it wasn’t happening. He had a timeout and that was a crucial possession and should have used it and set up a screen and pop jumper or a quick drive by Jacob . This game slipped away and although we didn’t lead by much, we were leading for most of the game and for most of it a win was looking likely . To play that hard on defense, neutralizing the 2 pros , Ayo and Cofi, Illinois had , and not winning really sucks. We will beat them by more than double figures in the rematch in a month.

We lost the game despite leading much of it and failed to make plays in the last 2 minutes...Illinois did and thats why they deserved the win...they were not lucky. They were not lucky that Paul messed up, they were not lucky Myles got a foul, they were not lucky that Harper slipped, they were not lucky Georgi got a rebound with a minute left which would lead to Illinois going up 4, they didnt get lucky that they absolutely murdered RU on the offensive boards getting way too many 2nd chance opportunities.

RU played well overall, nothing to be ashamed but they got beat today...winning matters and Illinois made the plays to win in a tight game and RU failed each opportunity

Disagree. You said they deserved to win and we did not . As the announcers said, it is a shame someone has to not win this rock fight. Illinois got away with one and I will leave it there.

Some good tidbits in here nice work.

This is BACs MO but he says 1 or 2 things that add a little value too.

Thought Pike left Myles out too long in second half IMO

they deserve to win because they executed the last two minutes..making plays yeah I would say that means you deserve to win

In a 4 possession stretch (2 for each team), Illinois got a layup attempt (2pts), ref took the ball from Rutgers, Illinois got a layup attempt (2pts), and Pikiell let Mulcahy dick around.

Big let down by RU in that

As to officiating, this was a street ball game - and it didn't feel biased to me, just was more "anything goes" for the most part. I don't attribute the outcome to officials - because they let a *ton* of stuff go throughout the game, so when they did choose to occasionally blow the whistle it was after at least 5 infractions that were let go.

The story of this game to me was the yin-yang of Young and Johnson. Young played out of his head, and Johnson played without his head.

First Young.... just tremendous effort today. Scored almost a third of our points, and had ZERO turnovers against a very aggressive Illini defense. Illinois didn't seem to have answers for him, and he also frustrated whoever he was guarding. He also had zero fouls - but only played 27 minutes? I feel that we really needed him out there for 30+ if we were going to win today given the offensive struggles and lack of Johnson on the floor. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for him this season and next, because he was a force out there.

Second Johnson... wow. Four fouls, but three committed OUTSIDE the three point arc and only one committed while defending Cockburn. Two on moving screens, and one on possibly the most boneheaded reach in attempt I've ever seen. After sitting most of the first half, he immediately decides to take a cheap swipe on a guard 30 feet from the basket? I was screaming at my TV "WTF are you DOING!?!" Losing him for another 14 or so minutes in the second half was a killer - and they ended up crushing us on the offensive glass.

One last comment... there was a stretch of 3-4 series in the second half where Cockburn was on the bench and Behanishvili was playing in the paint, and we settled for outside shots without once trying to get the ball into the paint. Have to get the ball inside there and force Cockburn to come back on the floor. Was 3-4 empty possessions on missed shots, and that spell allowed Cockburn to be fresh for the final stretch. Have to take advantage of the paint when we can, and instead we were passive.

Definitely a rock fight out there, and short of Johnson, I felt the team played with gritted teeth and kept the pressure on to the final whistle. Good sign on the road.

They got a bullshit call from the refs against Myles to get their separation. Go watch the replay because you think calls even out but that was crucial there. If we score instead of Myles ‘ BS call, it is back to. 2 point game . Jacob’s three makes it a one point game with 20 plus seconds. Our defense for almost 40 minutes was so outstanding it was criminal we did not win that game. We will not lose many games playing defense like that this year or next year.

Agree with your analysis and that it's weak to blame the refs as some on this thread are doing. My major concern as the season goes on is with Yeboah's production. He needs to contribute much more, especially with Geo out. It was clear that coach was searching for the best offensive combinations and Yeboah wasn't helping (obviously outside of the 3s at the start). I was hoping that by this time in the season Yeboah would be more of an offensive force since it's clear he has the ability.

What BS call on Johnson? His last two fouls were blatant. The reach in was clear as day, and the moving screen was lazy and late - and a worse screen than the first one he set that was also called for a foul, so he should have already known the whistle was going to blow. Johnson's last 3 fouls were on him.

Agree that the defense was good... but they were killing us with offensive rebounds.

Go watch the tape. Even the announcers said as they showed the replay that Myles was set and that was a bad call . So go look at it and then we will discuss. His third foul was him losing his basketball IQ and terrible. Part of their killing us on offensive rebounds was Myles not being there and our guards , and Akwasi and Ron , not rebounding like they have been.

I just finished watching it (couldn't watch live), and I was yelling at him before the whistle was even blown. Can't do that in that situation. I rarely listen to the announcers.

As for Myles not being there - that fourth foul wasn't the cause of that. His 2nd and 3rd were.

Nobody is blaming the refs nor are they being “weak” but to stick head in sand and not acknowledge as an important factor is actually the weak thought process. As physical a game as you will ever see and for Illinois to not even be in the bonus.... Even the announcers live at the game were surprised. Always amused that fouls are not a legitimate concern or topic. Idea that fouls always “even out” is intellectually dishonest.

Big let down by RU in that
RU had 4 straight possessions without points while Illinois had 4 straight possessions with points outscoring RU 8-0 in a 1 minute and 42 second stretch, I would say that is winning the game by making plays while one team is not.

Definitely. Like I said there was good and bad but “hard to win” win the ref looks to crush your win probability under 1:30 to go. Such is life being the low man on the totem pole in the big ten.

Watched on my phone in the casino down here in FL, while playing poker. Screen was a little small, but it beats gametracker, lol. Good summary. Felt the same way - very good effort, defensive slugfest with a similar team in talent and disposition and they made a couple more plays than we did and the rebounding killed us. 17 for Cockburn! Game was there to be won, but with evenly matched teams the home team will probably win 75% of those down the stretch.

By no means a "bad" loss at all and we'll have more of these games, as our defense will likely keep us in most to all of our games this year. Agree this is the first game we missed Geo's steadying hand. Loved seeing JY continue to play well, including numerous kick outs off drives for easy treys that were mostly missed. No major issues with the refs - and Myles has to stop moving on those picks. Now we need to beat Indiana and MN at home to keep up the momentum. Both are definitely winnable and we'll probably be favored at home, especially over MN (IU probably a toss-up).

Sure it was a factor (it always is), and I'm usually in the boat that is critical of the officiating. But Illinois had plenty to be mad at the refs about today, too. They swallowed their whistle most of the game, so you could probably compare every whistle to 2-3 similar plays at other points in the game where nothing was called. They "let them play" for the most part, and Illinois rose to that better than we did.... exactly as it was last year at their place.

Johnson could have played 22 minutes tonight if he didn't forget how to play basketball for a minute at the start of the 2nd half. Him trying to steal the ball from a guard at half court made as much sense as if Young had tried to post up Cockburn.

good point...I like what Yeboah has done this year but not sure Pike has a handle on exactly what is role should be in a game like today where we have Geo out and Myles sitting. I think defensively he put up solid minutes. Offensively 7 of his 10 shots came from 3. He had only 2 points in the 2nd half, for a guy who we count on offensively he needs to do better there. Inconsistency like some other guys

With Caleb I think his reduction in production might be a byproduct of Geo being out and Caleb being asked to defer to Young and to a lesser extent Ron and Montez.. I see a big increase in Calebs production rebounding of late. Still we need him hitting shots and after hitting all 8 vs Nebby, its sort of disappointing he is struggling but he may be getting tougher defense thrown at him

And even if Myles was rock steady on those screens, his feet were twice as wide as his shoulders, which is also an illegal screen (but is much less frequently called this year than a couple years ago). He needs to be better at setting picks, and he needs to learn that he's too valuable to the team to commit cheap fouls on guards.

remember the Big East..it was god awful everything was a foul, I am much more enjoying Big 10 refs rather than have teams take 40 ft a game. Both Illinois and RU played tough defense so not sure either team wanted a quick whistle today...and RU is one of the most physical teams in the league, thats why picking up illegal screens and stupid reach in fouls are just killer, you want to use your hard fouls in late game and we couldnt do that with Myles

yet RU got what one would say was a favorable whistle vs PSU

RU margin for error with Geo out is so high. Ticky tack fouls in a really close game... Illinois not even in bonus... Phanton fouls, no calls...Missing a walk is not equal to taking starting center out of game. Illinois center similar plays no calls... Flopping warning... are you kidding me?

Sorry like it or not a considerable factor.

I know this much there is absolutely no way Illinois will have only 4 fouls with 16 seconds to go in the second half at the RAC on 2/15. Also, the rebounding margin will be much more even because their key rebounders will be sitting a whole lot in foul trouble...take it to the bank...

Agree 100%, G. We had more FGs, 6 more threes. They had 13 more free throws, including eleven more attempts, and only 4 fouls going into end game. Not the reason we lost, but absolutely a factor.

This is an excellent recap imo. One thing I would add is that making free throws is under-rated in key moments. I say this with some reservation as there are so many things you can point to as a differentiator. But missing foul shouts gives your opponent new life and confidence. Another thing is our guards other than jacob who has really answered the bell lately struggled big time. Part of this is Illinois has big physical athletic guards so give them credit but Paul and Caleb are still young and it showed a little. This game will end up being a great learning experience. Finally it might be a little bit of a silver lining here as all the adulation was getting a little over the top. As exciting as this thing has started the BIG is a war every night. Rutgers hasn’t done anything yet. One game at a time.
