GAME 6 MASSACHUSETTS: Turn out the lights, the party is over

yeah his performance was Jordan like

it was a solid performance..... for him....his defense wasnt good overall and he was a non entity on offense given the flow of the game where every player was scoring and he was nowhere in defending the dribbler or the ball on the last possession
'
but I forgot its all about statistics for you

He isnt the reason why we lost, he is just one of the many reasons why we lost

Yes, as opposed to making shit up to fit your narrative. He had nine ****ing assists, yes he was a non-entity, you are out of your mind.

No one is saying he was Jordan like. He had a solid game. Solid in general, not just compared to his other games this season.

He has been bad every other game (meh, he was fine against NJIT) this year there is no need to pile on him when he actually has a good game.

You are going overboard

gee you think putting the ball in the hands of a 4-10 ft shooter at the end of the game is game awareness by players and coach

boy the expectations here are low....we are seeing multiple breakdowns and IQ plays each game...this was before the non timeout and our players racing down the court to try and win a 50 yard dash 100 ft away from the dribbler.

what did he do in the uber minutes he got when RU was losing a 15 point lead....if guys are playing 36 and 35 minutes then their play isnt all that hot when team loses the game, you cannot blame it all on Harper who has been blamed in multiple threads, the other guys dont get passes because instead of having train wreck games they actually made a few plays

McConnell is a 100-131 FT shooter. Though I will agree I don't want him shooting those now because I doubt he is in a good space mentally.

It also looked like UMass wasn't going to foul though so they passed him the ball to start the offense, not to get him fouled.

We are talking about McConnell in the most recent game specifically. This is just a bunch of miscellaneous complaints.

The game is 40 minutes long. "Well, what did he do in between the 17:26 and 11:29 marks of the second half" is not an argument it's just cherry picking stupidity.

Harper had a real shitty game but so what? There's no need to "blame it all on Harper". I'm certainly not doing that, I don't think I've posted a single thing about Harper.

I'm impressed that so many people still have passion for this team. That might be the most positive thing I've seen all season.

The UMASS coach was yelling foul Cliff and Mag. He was probably the best career foul shooter on the floor.

There are things to debate regarding coaching decisions. This certainly is not one of them. Pike didn’t turn in to a bad coach over night. This is 95+% a personnel issue.

The focus should be squarely in our inability to defend, specifically the perimeter.

Not who did or didn’t handle the ball down the stretch.

if perimeter D isn’t fixed our season isn’t fixed. That’s it. We can second guess this or second guess that. We have played 2 non joke conferences games now and have been absolutely shredded defensively. Both of those games our offense, as a whole, were decent.

McConnell had his best game this year, but he didn't have a great game overall - but part of that is on Pike, imo.

First half, he was working UMass' defense and getting the ball to the right guy at the right time. 7 assists - huge contribution, even though he only scored 2 points on 1/3 shooting inside the arc. He also got 6 steals, which was great, but gave up about 12 points in threes in trade - because he consistently lost his man gambling for the steal, leading to open looks. [EDIT: Went back to rewatch the game, and my memory was totally wrong here. While McConnell did gamble a bit for steals, none of those gambles led to made threes]

Second half, he started off the same way, and got his 8th assist immediately after halftime. Once we built up a double-digit lead, though, the "working the defense" bit went away. Only 1 more assist over the final 19 minutes, and no more steals.... yet he still was failing in 3pt defense (fouling a 3pt shooter for a 4 pt play, and giving up more open looks).

A lot of this was on Pike for calling off the dogs WAY too early and running clock instead of being aggressive. But you're going to change up the way you're playing the game to burn clock and take shots in the last 5 seconds, then you need to pull McConnell.... he can't make those shots right now, and you're taking away the things that made him good in the first half offensively - namely working the defense to get a good shot, rather than stalling and settling for a rushed shot.

If that's the gameplan, to hold and take a shot late in the clock, you need your best shooters on the floor.... and he's not it. In the final minute, you need guys who have the confidence to hit FTs.... and he's not it.

I think he came out great and did a really good job running the scouting-report offense... and then when Pike went into a shell later in the game, he was unsuited for that style. Either a) don't change the gameplan that was working and keep him on the court, or b) take him off the court when the gameplan changed.

When Pike looks at the tape he is going to feel helpless. His best defender (who at best is an average defender) was terrible in the 2nd half defensively. It was as if he was trying to get double digit steals. Many of the open 3s were his fault.

He was dialed in the 1st 10-15 minutes of the game.

All in all, he’s a net negative.
Defensive reserve specialist is what he should be limited to right now.
LOU, we just pointed to the actual stats of the game where he was not a net negative and was positive yesterday for the first time all year and the Type of performance we need from him going forward. One turnover in

the blame on Caleb this game is ridiculous. First off he played an 9 assist , 6 rebound , 6 steal, 1 turnover game for 35 minutes . If he did that any of the prior 5 games we win all of them easily. Second , the blaming of him for bad defensive 3 point defense is overplayed. UMASS had Christmas and every other Holliday going for them hitting 16-32 from 3 which was 12-23 at one point and we were still up 15. At least 3-4 of their 3’s were from 28-30 feet where we had a defender there but he was not going to go out further. The blond kid Kelly hit 2 in the first half almost from half court. Butrick hit the late one over Ron but stepped back to 25-28 feet to bring them to 79-78.
Caleb’s one missed one and one miss does not deserve the scorn he has gotten for Saturday’s performance. His performance in the first 5 games left a lot to be desired but not Saturday.

Doubt they will shoot like that ever again but we have to solve this success that teams are having hitting threes against us. Lehigh hit almost 10, NJIT hit 10, DePaul hit 9 including 5-5 down the stretch. Lafayette ‘s 3 point shooter the red head hit only 3-9 but we fouled him 3 times and he made 8-9 foul shots. UMASS made 16-32 but got fouled 2 times more ( Oscar with the bad defense ) and they made 6-6 from the line so almost 18. It is an epidemic and we have to close out with our feet on the floor and hands up without jumping into people . That was a bigger problem on Saturday and other games and Pike has to teach close outs better.

They had wide open looks. I don't have stats D1 wide. but I have to think 3 point percentage with wide open looks has to be in the 45% area.

Jaden cliff are the future, jones has to play alot more minutes. We need attackers on offense no chucks from 3 all game. NBA tryouts last summer😂, you got to be kidding

They were wide open as have our other opponents and goru is trying to say oh they just had a great shooting night...except receipts on RU defending the 3 all year says otherwise

We were horrific in defending the 3 and allow every weak sauce team to get confident

I said both. That our defending the 3 has been terrible in all the games and I mentioned Lehigh , NJIT , DePaul and UMASS they hit at least 9 against us and even Lafayette’s guy hit 3-9 but got fouled 3 times. I said Pike has to fix it now with better close outs staying on our feet.
I also said UMASS hitting 16-32 and getting fouled 2,more times for like 18 or 54 points was kinda lucky considering a number were from 25-30 feet away. Let’s see if UMASS in the A10 ever hits 16-32 from 3 again. Never happening.

Caleb gave up 5-6 uncontested attempts, where he either went for a steal and ended up behind his man or didn't close out. [EDIT: After going back to review the game, he really didn't. He gambled a bit, but they didn't result in made threes.] He had another where he fouled the shooter. He's usually really solid on defense, and wasn't last night on the perimeter - my guess is because he was trying to do too much. He didn't have any steals in the second half, and I'd assume there was a halftime discussion about not gambling so much.

If you go back and watch the game, you'll see that Caleb was trying to jump the passes or swipe at the ball through much of the first half, which then put him out of position on their shooters. I'm wondering, too, if he felt he had to play superman defense in Baker's absence to account for more minutes from Jones? But Jones didn't have an especially terrible day on defense - but I'd have to go back and watch to see if McConnell was trying to do too much to help Jones.

Offensively he did much better than he has recently, short of actually scoring. Had Pike run the same game plan in the second half, he'd probably have ended up with 12+ assists... but the offensive approach switched to a style McConnell isn't suited to play right now.

I taped the game and will will rewatch either tonight or Wednesday after Clemson to see how many times Caleb left his man wide open for a 3 and how many they hit from 25-30 feet that are not good 3 point shots. Remembering watching it live I do not recall Caleb leaving his guy wide open 5-6 times and the guy hit a 3.

We have for the most part been very poor in defending the three in Pikes tenure I can only think of a few games where we made it a point to actually stay with our man and guard the three. The reason all these teams get wide open looks is just watch how far our men are off there men. Most of the times our guys are all the way in the lane and when the other team rotates the ball quickly the other team ends up with wide open 3's; Hence the high percentage against us!!
This also begs the question how come so many teams can hit wide open threes yet we can't and we have had plenty of wide open threes this year

Thanks. I usually am able to go back and rewatch with a more critical eye, but can't this week. Hopefully my impressions during the game were wrong.

Last week there were a couple of moments that felt like Mulcahy was way out of position on threes, but it turned out on a second viewing that those weren't what they looked like live.

Okay, had some time over lunch and went back to watch. While McConnell did gamble at times, it doesn't look like those were on 3pt attempts that went in - so my perception linking the wide open threes to McConnell's gambling on steals was entirely wrong.

I looked at ever 3pt attempt by UMass that resulted in points.... and wow so many of them were uncontested in the first half. 7 of 8 made threes in the first half were completely uncontested, and the last had some token pressure from a help defender.... much better in the second half, with just 2 of 8 going uncontested.

First Half:
17:26 – McConnell fell down guarding his man, and Jones slid off his man to pick up McConnell’s man. Jones’ man hit an uncontested 3. Not sure what could have been done differently here… McConnell fell, so Jones had to choose between two guys and the other would have an uncontested look.

10:16 – Hyatt goes for steal on pass to Jones, ending up out of position. Jones hits 3 with token pressure from Agee. This one is on Hyatt.

9:37 – Agee sags off his man, and then helps down to the paint and leaves Weeks wide open for uncontested 3. This one is on Agee.

7:15 – Super deep uncontested 3 by Rich Kelly while it looks like we were playing zone. Mag had no shot at getting out on him.

6:47 – Again in zone, Mulcahy has a man in the left corner, but Jones across from right to left to double. UMass passes out of it, Omoruyi picks up that man, leaving Rich Kelly wide open at the top for uncontested 3. Looks like this was Jones’ error here.

6:11 – Rich Kelly penetrates, screening off McConnell. Omoruyi picks him up, and McConnell chases down to the paint. Hyatt comes over from the corner off his man, putting now 3 defenders on Kelly under the rim. Kelly kicks out to Hyatt’s man (CJ Kelly) for an uncontested 3. McConnell was initially beat, but Hyatt had no reason to triple team here. I’d say this one is on Hyatt.

5:37 – McConnell on Kelly in the corner, follows him up as if it is man defense. Once he sees Harper has him, he drops down to take Hyatt’s man, forcing Hyatt to come out to cover CJ Kelly for an uncontested 3. This looks like it’s on McConnell… he may have thought we were in man, but we were in zone?

0:22 –Harper is on Buttrick and McConnell is on Dominguez. McConnell drops down to the paint to help, but Buttrick/Dominguez switch places. McConnell comes back but ends up doubling Buttrick, leaving Dominguez wide open for 3. This looks like it’s on McConnell losing track of his man, and maybe Harper for not switching?

Finished the half 8/19 from the arc.

Second Half:
18:06 – McConnell on Rich Kelly in corner, but drops off him to the paint to help against penetration. Pass out to Kelly and Harper swing over off his man to help, but leaves CJ Kelly for uncontested 3. I think this is on McConnell overhelping and leaving Kelly.

17:15 – Jones is on CJ Kelly, but drops down off him to double on penetration. Mulcahy tries to recover on the three point shooter, but can’t get there in time. This one is on Jones.

15:34 – Can’t even figure out what was supposed to happen on this play. Total disarray. Not sure if we were supposed to be in zone here or man – thinking maybe a 2-3 zone? Mulcahy and Omoruyi both end up in the corner on the same man, and Mulcahy directs Omoruyi away toward the middle. He tries to go to the middle and pick up the guy Harper is on, but that leaves that man double teamed and Mulcahy guarding two well spaced shooters on the wing. Omoruyi tried to run out on the second, but too late.

14:17 – McConnell dropped down off of CJ Kelly to help Omoruyi, but the ball was immediately passed to CJ Kelly for a three. McConnell fouled him for a 4 point play. This one is on McConnell.

11:16 – Covered 3 in Harper’s face. Doesn’t look like a defensive lapse here.

9:51 – Palmquist caught up in screen in paint trying to run from left corner to right, got to shooter late and fouled him. Hit 3/3 FTs. Palmquist was a bit slow around the screen here.

7:46 – Agee and Palmquist both end up under the basket on no man. Pass to trailer, and Mulcahy leaves his man to try to contest but doesn’t get anywhere close. Not sure who was wrong here between Palmquist and Agee.

6:49 – Palmquist caught on step back, and then overrecovered to foul the 3pt shooter. Made 2/3 FTs.

1:15 – Harper came down into the paint with Buttrick, and then seemed to lose track of him and lose focus looking at Omoruyi’s man. Couldn’t recover on long three point attempt. This one is on Harper.

0:00 – Mag covering Fernandes a little too far back, gave him enough daylight to shoot. Don’t see this as a defensive lapse – but we should have called a timeout to set up the defense here.

They shot 8/13 from the arc in the second half, and 6/7 on FTs resulting from 3pt attempts.

Wow....Sounds like 2 or 3 3s came because we were confused as to what D we were playing or guys didn't know who to pick up.

Little stuff like this leads to wins and losses and obviously must be cleaned up.

I saw one possession we went full court zone and then switched mid possession to man. In theory I like this, but in application too easy to mess up.

I don't think one of those botched possessions had us in a defense like that, but you never know.

It was obvious to me that Pike thought Hyatt was to blame in the 1st half D either to execution or effort or both. You don't get a 2nd half DNP unless you ticked off the coach.

It looks like 6 of their 16 threes came after a defender left his man on the perimeter to help against a penetrating player in the paint, and UMass found the open man for a good look. I didn't look at their missed threes, but have to believe we helped down off several of those, too.

There were definitely plays where there was confusion on defense, though.

I don't know about Hyatt, though. Yes there were a couple of threes that looked to be on a miscue from him, but most weren't. Not going to go back again and just watch his defense in the first half. Pike was clearly sending a message of some kind by playing Palmquist over him but I wouldn't be able to say what that message was.

Hey Choppin: Finally got to watch the UMASS tape. 8 threes made in each half plus fouled on 2 more in second half, and they made 5-6 foul shots so 18 made on 32/ 34 attempts. They also were made in a row by one player by the little blond guy Kelly and CJ Kelly Both in spurts. A number of them were caused by all our players guards and forwards allowing deep penetration and kick out.
UMASS had 1 three pointer up to the 11:34 mark of the first half caused by penetration. Next one Hyatt went for steal and missed leaving Kelly open at top of the key making score 24-9 at 10:32. Next one Agee late on a switch and Weeks hit one at 9:12. Next 2 we’re in succession and hurt as the leads were about to go back to 15 and maybe to 20 as little Kelly hit 2 bombs from deep, Mag late on a close out and couldn’t get there and Cliff late on a switch. Cut lead to 30-21. Then later in the half CJ Kelly hit 2 in a row , one off penetration and dish out and twice Hyatt was late to get there. Last one of the half after building lead back up to 46-31 was by Dominguez and Caleb was late . So to summarize first half 3 point defense only 1 was specifically on Caleb, 3 on Hyatt, 2 were Agee and Cliff were late on the switches and Mag late once. Lack of proper energy , communication and effort to take away 3.

Second half, RJ Kelly hits 2 in a row caused by ball penetration by Fernandez and kick out , Caleb late on the first one and leads cut to 49-37, then 51-40 but Jones finally hits a 3 back to bring it back to 54-40 with 16:26 to go. Next one , Caleb was close and too close as he fouls and RJ Kelly makes the 4 point play to cut lead to 58-49 and then Weeks hit one and Ron was close but close out late and then Dominguez hit one and Oscar was late. 68-57. The next 2 we’re killers because our offense was getting anything they wanted and we went back up 72-57. Oscar fouled RJKelly and Fernandez on back to back tries as he closed late and recklessly left his feet and out of control. They hit 5-6 foul shots. Oscar was put in by Pike with 15:11 in the second half and subbed out and came back until 6:49. The last 2 was Ron losing Butrick and he stepped way out 24 feet and Ron could not get there and the last one for the win Mag must have thought Fernandez was going to go by him because he never got up on him. Some confusion as who was guarding him after Paul’s make. In summary , it also was a collective effort and we tried getting closer but fouled 3 shooters who made 5-6 and a 4 point play. I did not see Caleb lose his man 6 -7 times as almost everyone contributed to the bad defense. UMASS did hit 3-4 bombs from deep.
More truoubling was Ron got hurt on a drive and winced noticeably with about 2-3 minutes to go. He then was late on Butrrick ‘s 3 , got caught on a switch with Fernandez 2x and fouled him once causing 2 foul shots and almost beat again but they gave Mag the foul causing 2 foul shots . So Ron’s injury affected his lousy defense during the end game and caused him to defer last 2 minutes on offense as well.

If you scroll up a bit, you'll see my breakdown from Tuesday of each of the made threes and two fouls on missed threes, and I rescinded that observation (I also went back and edited my prior comments to call out my error). The times I saw Caleb gamble did not lead to made threes.

There were only two extra-deep threes made that I saw (one by Rich Kelly and one late by Buttrick).
