Gavin needs more touches…

Thought has crossed my mind a few times.. Are we sure that Gavin comes back next yr? Wouldn't surprise me if he didn't feel this was a good fit for him, and looked for a program that more suits his game. Maybe like a Creighton or Iowa, where shooters excel
Is he really a shooter? He seems to have patented the air ball jumper.

Complete and utter wild speculation. Is there a reason why you assume he’s not a “good fit”? You don’t think he’s getting good coaching or something….else? Please explain.

I said it wouldn't surprise me if Gavin didn't think it was the best fit for him. The offense we run is awful, and we play gritty - exhausting defense. Hes having a hard time keeping up on the defensive end. Its places where he wouldn't have to worry about that. But I don't know Gavin. It just wouldn't shock me, because these sought after kids - have all the options in the world

We did this to Peter Kiss and we’re doing it to Gavin. They came in with expectations as the three point specialist and that’s all they ever took.

Gavin really needs to start taking some midrange shots to get his confidence up. Then slowly get back to taking threes. Some of the shots he’s taking are tough. Off the dribble/catch and shoot three off of a screen. You have to be stone cold to be taking shots like that.

I agree with this.

Thing is coaching has enough faith in him to keep coming off the double screen on inbounds to keep getting him looks. That should speak volumes to Gavin considering his slump. Time will tell

He tried that yesterday and airballed a baseline midrange jumper.

Because we are a program built around defense

I am watching UConn/Xavier, and Cam just run through a screen at the 3 point line, and took an open jump shot from the top of the key that he easily sank. I had tears in my eyes thinking we should be running these plays for Gavin . . .

Stop - He’s 52% from the FT line where nobody can guard him period. The solution isn’t about screening for him.

He is pressing. He needs to take good shots and let the game come to him. Forcing bad or contested shots is not going to have good results.

That is not true. Kiss was a 28% three point shooter when he was at Quinnipiac, before he came to Rutgers.

Fix that for you.

How would Gavin (or any player) get themselves better shots?
Isn’t that why the coaches run plays?
(Assuming we run plays).

Is the premise Gavin needs to wonder around the court outside of the play call to get the ball?
Or when he gets the ball don’t follow the play and just look to score himself?

Someone else said Gavin needs to stop standing in the corner.
What if that is where Pike puts him on the play?
Is Gavin supposed to ignore the play calls?

Whose fault is it when he misses when unguarded from the charity stripe ? 52% is awful.

Plays are run for players that make baskets. Kid is off kilter and taking some WTF shots. It’s simple: let HIM set picks, let HIM slash to the basket and let HIM bang under the basket for rebounds and loose balls. He needs to generate his own offense with effort because he is currently no where near being a “go to shooter” for the offense. Kid has the form, length and the athleticism to be a “guy” but it’s been a rough adjustment when his competition is bigger, faster and stronger. Once he gets a few baskets by showing he can drive, I believe things will start opening up for him.

Pike can’t start running plays for those that don’t produce.

I think you quoted the wrong post.
There was nothing about FT% in that post.

But since you brought up FT%.
Agree. Terrible FT%. No real excuse for such a bad percentage at this level.
Same for Williams (50% FT.) and Davis (43% FT).
Going to be hard to play any of those 3 at the end of a close game.

My point was he’s not making FTs which are completely, uncontested, and Unrushed shots. He’s supposed to be a shooter. If your Pike, why would you go out of your way to set screens to get shots for a player who is bricking free throws?

Paul is rapidly becoming a non contributor at Washington
I'm not sure how much it's affected Paul's play, but he injured his finger pretty badly in mid-November, and it was a problem for the last half of November and at least most of December also. He missed a late November game because of it, and several weeks later (more than a month after the injury initially occurred) in a press conference before Washington's Dec 21st game against Eastern Washington, the coach was asked about Paul's injury and he said that Paul just had to play through it, and that Paul was tough and that he wanted to play through it...

I don't know if the injury is completely healed now or not, but I'm going to wait and see how he plays in future games before making any assumptions about his ability based on some sub-par stats when he was often playing injured with his index and middle finger taped together so they couldn't bend... (It was his left hand, but it still could've affected his play....)

Think it was Bardo who pointed out in the last game that someone on RU had the ball down low trying to make a move and Griffiths went right to where the player was, bringing his defender with him.

Griffiths needs to get some easier 2pt baskets. See the ball go through the twine again. Build some confidence.

Like a baseball player who is in a slump. You don't get out of it by trying to hit home runs. Need to go back to just putting the bat on the ball. Take it to the opposite field until you can build a rythm back up again.

Some of you just don’t seem to get the puzzle pieces that go into managing a locker room. You cannot continue to play someone who flat out isn’t producing and has never before produced at the collegiate level. Nobody earns indefinite playing time based on his recruiting ranking. I don’t care who you are - if your D stinks, your not a PG (on a team that needs a ball handler) and your shooting under 35% - your not going to play. That would go for Ace and Dylan too if either of them show up and have GG’s output after 15 games (unlikely).

To sit other guys (Oskar, Simpson, Davis, Austin, Noah, whoever) who to this point are consistently performing better than him to let GG “play through” his lack of productivity at some point becomes unfair. It was one thing against cupcakes but now games are on the line. It’s true, nobody else has been great on offense either, but GG is currently the worst at everything else (worst at defense, worst ball handler among the guards, and worst per minute rebounder among forwards). Therefore - he’ll get a chance to go in and prove he can help us on offense every game but after a few minutes he’s going to come out if he doesn’t help. Why is this hard for some to understand?

I wish we had one cream puff left on the schedule, then if I were Pike I’d ask Gavin to bring the ball up the court. Best way to get focused, energized and to build confidence.

Anyone who thought that Gavin would driving to the basket and scoring at this level did not do their homework. He is a 3 point shooter, with a quick release and a lot of range. Yes, he is a good athelte, but shooting is his game. Next year, Dylan and Ace will put him in better position to score (because they break down defenses, by beating the defender and drawing double teams).

I don’t think this is entirely accurate. Gavin has been bad since the calendar flipped (or better yet the Stonehill game). Before that he was playing fine. Not great, probably not even good, but fine. In the last 5 games he’s 2-20. Yes, it’s been ugly, but I can’t subscribe to Oskar and Noah consistently outplaying him especially over that same 5 game stretch.

I don’t think his minutes are down because Pike was concerned about the locker room. He’s decided that giving Gavin a break is the way to get him out of this. We’ll see if Pike is right.

You need to play hard defense to stay on the court for Pike. Just ask Jaden Jones and Peter Kiss. Oskar doesnt play much either - because of his D.

Noah isn’t a world beater on D but he’s much better right now than Gavin. It’s not close. So when your D is awful and your also shooting 35% from the field, you don’t deserve to play. If his shots start falling he will see more time. It’s really that simple. He’s not going to come into games - go 0-3 with bad D and stay in for more than 5 min. That wouldn’t be fair to the rest of the team.
