"Hurley ceaselessly acted like a wild man, like, well, Mike Rice. That he wasn’t ejected — he spent more time stomping and screaming at the officials than coaching — was a matter of either the refs’ extreme tolerance or their conditioned expectations from Hurley."

"At game’s end, the handshake line abruptly ended when Hurley apparently had something unkind to say to a St. Francis player. A hassle ensued until St. Francis’s gentlemanly coach, Glenn Braica, stepped in and sent Hurley away."

"But then on to Rhode Island, where it was reported that in a 2013 game at Fordham, Hurley was start-to-finish out of control, and “on multiple occasions in the second half after media timeouts or whistles, sprinted from his bench toward the Fordham sideline, attempting to provoke Fordham coach Tom Pecora.”

"This season, Hurley was in the focus of an ugly, strange brew near the end of a Maryland-Rhode Island holiday tournament game in Mexico.
Late in the game, he and Maryland coach Mark Turgeon were hit with technicals after hollering at each other, then, at game’s end, the handshake line ended with pushing and shoving between coaches as per claims Hurley had shaken hands while making derogatory comments to Maryland players"

Bob Knight did much worse and guys like Jay Bilas and Dick Vitale love him.

It's not like Hurley was throwing basketballs at players' heads.

To start, Bobby Knight has 3 rings. That and the remaining part of his resume lets him get away with the rest of the story.

If the next guy wins one, JUST one here I'll let him hit you in the head with the chair. ;)

And who knows what has happened in Newark, Grymes Hill or Kingston? Last time I checked nobody cares about any of them...but they WILL if/when he gets to Piscataway.

The expectations here are unbelievably out of control. Hurley can win at RU.

He's a guy who I believe would take the job. He's from NJ, knows the recruiting territory and I think would like to turn RU around.
We don't want a guy who we believe would take the job if asked, we want the guy to WANT the job.

I don't want to hear, "yeah, I'll give it a shot."

Who's your choice then? Keeping in mind budget and taking into account our history.

Beggars can't be choosers.

They hire Hurley and all this and more will be uncovered and reported.

All of a sudden once Rutgers hires him, he will become an angel?

If Mushnick can find it, I'm sure those more competant reporters will uncover possibly even more.

He's another potential Mike Rice, and Rutgers doesn't need that right now.

Next!

Not too far removed from Mike Rice, this would be ugly for Rutgers, along with the other things mentioned in the article.

We are not beggars.

And from what I have seen/read/heard I would like to see what kind of interview Sendek has with Hobbs.

It seems like he has some of the same attributes a lot of people were looking for in a FB coach...was a HC already, won at 2 different P5 schools, can recuit, can build.

Sendek isnt coming here. NJ media LOVES Hurley..big advantage here..they love Hobbs as well.

the hate is strong here. Rutgers is a beggar. Hurley offers some advantages some other guys do not have

No hate. If it happens, like others have already said, I hope he is extremely successful and is "the guy."

And why do you think the local media will love Hurley? I have some thoughts.

So now we have to avoid any guy who gets fired up? Fire is what we need. I'm sure Hobbs will be very hands on with this program and monitor it. We just fired the calmest coach in America in Jordan. Guess what? He realllly didn't do well, and his lack of passion convinced no big-time recruits to come here

Hurley convinced 4 stars to go to Rhode island and they have MAJOR roles on their team with major production.

This is the same fanbase that was clamoring for Bob Knight 3 years ago. If you don't want Hurley to be the coach - you don't think he is good enough, we can do better, don't like the Hurleys in general - whatever, that's fine. And I understand the sensitivity to this issue post -Mike Rice. But is anyone else in the country talking about Hurley's behavior outside of this message board? Let's not make an issue out of a non-issue. And let's not use Phil Mushnick, of all people to make this point. The man would have bashed Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and Joe Namath.

Facts are facts, no matter who presents them.

I think once Hurley is vetted, Hobbs will move on.

Who was talking about this? A major NYC paper. Yesterday. We are a school with issues in this area that were splashed all over creation for months. Remember? Going out and hiring someone who might have similar issues, well-known, might not be the smartest move to make. The list of 8 contained a lot of good coaches.

If budget was as bad as people think Hobbs would not have fired Jordan. He had every excuse imaginable available to keep him:

ie catastrophic injuries, Sanders/Freeman/Laurent/Johnson return, buy out costs, waiting to be one year closer to facilities, more B1G money available, etc - waiting the next year would've provided additional resources and benefits to improve the candidate pool.

If he isn't able to pay a considerable amount (IMO ~$1.5M; which isn't great but more than we're used to) or get a guy better than Hurley than he really screwed up big and should've told everybody clamoring to fire Jordan to go f*** themselves.

Did they help keep his daughter out of Rutgers too? Or was it him? I forget. LOL

And can we please stop with the temperament comparisons with Bobby Knight and Danny Hurley. Pre-, Post- and even Present-Rice I think we would all say sign 'em up to The General. That kind of jewelry has a certain effect on men.

Hurley will cost around 1.5 mil. I don't want to wait and see another p5 school take Hurley. He has done good work at both his stops and I am extremely alarmed that our "fans" can have their eyes so closed to that fact.

The fact you wanted to keep Jordan is kinda scary.

So was Mike Rice
And Mike got our best recruiting class in a long time. At least we had a scheme under him. If we don't hire a coach who calls our players f*****s while being filmed during practice and doesn't throw basketballs at their heads, I don't give a damn if he yells and screams. Who. Cares.

Mike wasn't even know for his recruiting when he got here. Hurley is..I would love to see what he can do. Again...4 stars to Rhode freaking island.

I wanted to play the long game; I'd rather wait one year to choose from a better coaching pool than hire Hurley right now. I'll support whoever is here in the end.

As a side note I am getting annoyed at the people saying "Hurley wants to see Rutgers turned around". Hurley's don't give a s*** about Rutgers any more than any other coach. If he is offered and if he comes here, it'll be for no other reason than the $$$ and coming home.

Oh please..he's a good coach. We would be LUCKY to hire him. Thank goodness your pathetic opinion doesn't matter in all this

"Hurley ceaselessly acted like a wild man, like, well, Mike Rice. That he wasn’t ejected — he spent more time stomping and screaming at the officials than coaching — was a matter of either the refs’ extreme tolerance or their conditioned expectations from Hurley."

This is ok?

This is the guy you want to coach Rutgers?

Although I could be wrong, I'm sure there are more incidents beyond the incidents in the column.

Well that's a stupid argument. The man is 41. If he comes here he wants to succeed and further his career. It's the coaches like sendek im worried about not giving a shit once they get here and just collecting their paycheck. His best years are definitely behind him. To argue that Hurley doesn't care about winning if he comes here at this young, hungry stage in his career is ludicrous.

So then show me the other incidents then, rather than blindly speculating.

Guess what? All of that bullshit is OK if he wins and he recruits. I couldn't care less.

Next week the writer is going to start actually following college basketball. Or we can just assume he was kidding.
