1) called for a 5-6 point let down loss in Bac’s prediction thread. So yea…

2) and really the reason for the thread…
Why do they only sell the generic number 1 jerseys?

I thought they did this because it had something to do with Pre-Nil laws.

Why arent there player jerseys for sale (especially at the RAC) ideally with the kids whose jersey is being sold getting a cut?

Isn’t that NIL in its purest form?

My kid wants a damn blacked out McConnell or Mulcahy jersey.
Why not sell me one?

That's a good point. If anything makes sense to make money off of it's your own jersey...

This is stupid but I don't think the University can get involved with anything NIL related.
Fanatics has them for some schools with player names on the back but not Rutgers

@Geo_Baker_1 any idea about Rutgers players being able to sell their own jersey now with NIL? or they can't bc school has jersey rights but can't be involved?

Really seems like they should be able to and profit off it

Wasn't that sort of the starting point of the whole concept of NIL in the first place?

Thanks.
Yea I figure there is some reason why.
It’s just nuts that this would be the piece of NIL that’s not kosher.

Order a jersey from China. You can get anyone you want with their name and number.

Why wouldn't the NIL collective itself sell the player Jerseys and gear? They sell gear with the collective name on the gear.

Probably because the collective would have to pay the upfront fees that would include minimum production runs. Could be quite costly. A jersey is more expensive than a tee shirt to manufacture. Might end up being a money losing proposition for them.

This or Esty are good options

Probably because it is not worth it financially to have them made. I think Geo had his own non-Adidas jersey, but I’ve only seen a few of them being worn at games.

Great analysis!

No way. It’s obviously not worth it if they don’t have the RU label on it. But the OP’s million dollar question is why can’t the schools collaborate with the players? It would be a win / win. I don’t know what a fair split would be but it would certainly favor the school to the point you make that without the RU logo, the value diminishes. But even an 80 / 20 split would put a ton of money in the pockets of the kids because fans would buy official team jerseys. The money would go directly towards funding for the team the jersey was purchased for on the school side. Most players would view it as something they could do to help the school. Geo’s issue was that the players got nothing - not that the school shouldn’t get money for the program through the players.

Rutgers is already selling jerseys.

Rutgers also will probably be able to minimize cost and risk better than KTR due to their existing relationships if we are talking official Jerseys or replica.

The problem is that they are selling generic non-player jerseys.
And some dumb aspect of this rule prevents them (I assume) from selling a players jersey. Which is what people really want.

Actual players.
Actual Rutgers gear.

Second thought.

At a minimum they should 86 the “1” jersey and sell player jerseys from former players. I wonder what the rules say about former student athletes and university being involved?

I’d buy an official @Geo_Baker_1 jerseyfor my kid at the RAC and he should get a cut.

I don’t think there’s a rule against this because at Davidson they sell more Steph Curry jerseys/merch than anything else in the arena

Right, so why doesn’t the university let KTR make the player specific ones? Especially if KTR *is* allowed to be directly involved with NIL

You're missing the entire point of this thread
University can't sell the kids jerseys. NCAA is as stupid as it gets. Pretty sure the poster I replied to said their kid wanted a specific player's jersey. If they want it go get it. I agree the rules are stupid and inconsistent. Poster I replied to seemed to actually want a jersey.

It’s both.
Yes i want the jersey.

It just grinds my gears that the school and the kid don’t benefit from their brand and name. The only way I can get what I want is to send my money to China and cut out the folks who actually generated the value in what I’m buying.

Meanwhile we can just hand over money for nothing.

So yea my post was coming from both those aspects and I was wondering what the specific rule was that prevented this.
That was the “I’m dumb” part of the title

Btw I’m not even sure what site I use to send my money to China for a knock off McConnell jersey.

Great question about the #1 Jersey - doesn't make sense. Jerseys don't have to have the name of the back (#1 obviously doesn't) and wouldn't think the players have the rights to the numbers alone. It would be nice if there was a relationship between players and University to split proceeds. How hard is it to make a template Rutgers Jersey, and have 4 or 5 different number combinations with no name on the back? It doesn't even have to be current player numbers if you don't want to offend anyone on the current roster. That being said we have a great program right now and are seriously lacking in merch!

Just depends on the school. Rutgers is behind on the game of licensing the R to players where both the school and player would get a cut. Rutgers does have some sort of nil site but i don’t think jerseys are available on it. Someone else said it too. They may not view it as profitable.

Thanks Geo. So you’re saying this site does give a cut to Caleb if I buy a t shirt with his name on it?
They just don’t have jerseys?

Theoretically, RU could work with someone (like the Chinese site my son bought a Johnny Football jersey when he was still #17.....his mom LOVED it when she saw my son wearing it at a game) to do small runs of individual jerseys.....custom order for fans. This would be a pain in the butt for RU, but could potentially enable players to get an NIL cut and satisfy fans desire for a player specific jersey. But currently you have to go outside (like China) for unlicensed stuff to meet your needs. I wish I could tell you where he found the jersey...but I would guess a good google search for Caleb McConnell Rutgers jersey would get you there. I'm with you...it should be easy for the fan in this day and age....and if NIL is for real, the player should get the $$$ benefit. Hopefully soon because this should be the true spirit of NIL.
