I love Coach Ash but does everyone from the 1995 Drake Football team need to be here? A top notch DC from Tennessee is out of a job and we could use him. Director of Player Development just hired was at Drake when he was there. Def Coordinator also from Drake when Ash was there.

The list goes on and on.....

Does it go on and on? I believe most of the other guys are from either OSU or Wisocnsin, not Drake.

Either way, your post is really nothing more than a buzz word. "Cronyism." Cronyism implies that positions are being given to friends or allies. Unfortunately for the point you are trying to make, this is really only a negative in public office, when public benefits are being sent to friend on an inside track. The simple reality for the private sector is that nearly all hiring is relationship based. This is especially true in coaching, where coaches work in tight circles, and have to abide by certain overall philosophies and schemes to be able to work well together. There is nothing wrong with any of that.

I tend to agree that I am less than thrilled with the DC hire, but so be it. Ash is a defensive specialist himself, so I will give the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.

To find true cornyism at work, the far more nefarious kind, look down the hall at our new AD. His hiring was a political handout of the highest order. But hell, I have shut up about that too. He seems to be doing a good job so far, and he shows that he is not working towards the best interests of Rutgers, I am not going to harp on it.

Ash made it clear on day one that he wanted alignment from top to bottom. Of course he's going to hire people he knows, because he's much more certain they'll share his vision than someone he doesn't know. Were there more talented options out there? Yeah, probably. But if Ash wants one thing and he hires a DC who does things differently, you're going to have a mess on your hands.

Besides, when you're running the show, it's load off your mind when you have people helping you that you already trust.

Actualy this is still the public sector as these guys are state employees. I just was looking for some form of innovation like the OC hire. But this late in the game with limited contacts I understand the hires.

anyone from Hostess available? Heard they had a bunch of folks let go a few years ago.

From top to bottom this staff has more experience than the previous. Were you upset with the previous staff's connections to Flood from his UDel and Hofstra days? How about the experience levels of previous staffs coordinators? If there was ever cronyism it was the last staff.

There is a big difference between public office and public sector. Fortunately for us given NJ's corruption, HC is not a public office. Anyhow, I get your point, but it is an unavoidable reality. The real complaint doesn't seem to be cronyism, but the lack of better cronies.

It does?

If the OP can tell me 3 facts about the prior Director of Player Development that can't be found in his SK.com bio, I'll be impressed.

The staff has been selected - there may be a DC from Tennessee with talent - but the job is now filled
... and regardless, this is Ash's staff - a staff that has been assembled with a priority on 'alignment' ... Ash's chief concern is having all of the staff on the same page.
It really does not matter whether various coaches are 'noteworthy' or 'high profile' it will only matter that they deliver on the plans that Ash puts in place
Virtually none of the RU fans have even so much as been in the same room with Ash - let alone have had a conversation with him... essentially all knowledge of him has come from what can be found on the internet.... so it is difficult to know exactly how he analyzes situations. However his reputation is that he is a very bright guy -
All of the extensive first-hand comments (while there are not a lot) have come from experienced coaches & players who have worked with him - & have been universally & resoundingly positive and all credit him with having a sound mind and being extraordinarily insightful.
So it might be good to grant him the prerogative to do what he was hired to do - assemble the staff that he believes is aligned with his vision and will best execute on his plans to build the program into a winner.

what you smell is coach hiring who he wants ...not who you want.. when you get to be coach, what you want will matter.

This is not negative. It's a question about the people on the staff. It's neither negative nor postive. It's neutral. It's a neutral post.

If that's not negative then it is complaining. To be truthful I would rather hear a negative comment than a complaint. I get enough of that from my horrible, money grubbing, inbred in-laws. Save that comment until we have multiple losing seasons with his recruits. You have to give him a pass for next year as he was not able to fully recruit the entire year.

Coach Ash is filling out his staff with people he's familiar with?!?!?! How dare he...

nəˈferēəs/
adjective
  1. (typically of an action or activity) wicked or criminal.
"the nefarious activities of the organized-crime syndicates"

If cronyism brings a program that puts winners on the field count me in.

it's the same as Flood hiring people from his past stops at Hofstra like Cohen. That turned out to be a great hire! Oh wait...

Same shit again, continuously on repeat and the board clowns continually eat it up. He can do no wrong right now. Only a matter of time before this honeymoon ends. Not impressed at all with many of his staff hires especially with what's out there currently and with what we saved by going the coordinator route for a HC instead of a proven HC.

It's his Staff he can hire who he want's. The end results either positive or Negative are on Ash. If he is to be Judged than it MUST be on his terms. Not on who other people think should be hired.

Post your desired staff that would have fit within the given budget.

This is a much better staff than anything Flood put together (aside from Prince/Fridge).

Cause Cohen had as much FBS and BCS experience as all these guys do....

Did you miss the next 20 years of his coaching career? You make it like he was at Drake yesterday.....

Last time I checked Ash was the head coach, not a bunch of message board know it all's. Its his job on the line, so he gets to choose his staff. If anyone on here has won a national championship game, then ok. Otherwise let the coach do the hiring and let HIS staff get to work.
