At 6-10 playing the 4 with Cliff still on the floor, I saw him having an impact.

I thought he’d be an important piece and we’d all be impressed with his minutes.

For me, Dean’s ability to contribute was vital.
Any success by him would allow Pike to not have Mag and Hyatt on the floor together during important moments when it’s obvious high BB IQ is important

Ya was really hoping he would develop his game and be a bigger contributor, a consistent 6pts and 3 rebounds off the bench, instead his numbers are down across the board.

Do we think Dean has high BB IQ? Seems pretty flighty to me. Brings effort for sure though. Last year at least.

He’s coming off an injury but he seems exceptionally slow..even slower than last year. If it’s not injury related, he’s regressed. It seem like he’s reacting after-the-fact and he was really bad in limited minutes last night. I expect him to have some moments, but I can’t see Woolfolk not displacing him.

Guys come off injuries every night all across the country.
He’s been practicing for weeks,
You’re not divulging information to our opponents if you admit one of your players is slowed by an injury.
If he’s limited say so..

I also expected him to do more. I think a part of it is he is not comfortable playing the four spot. I had hoped he could slide over to PF, but he's struggling there and it's not a natural fit.

And it's possible that spending most of his time in practice at the four is limiting his time gelling with these guys as the backup five.

It honestly seems like they have all regressed. Or stayed the same. Idk what's going on. Idk if it's Paul not being out there or what. But no one looks better than last year. Dean looks worse and so does Cliff's defense.

Dean has always been slow and not athletic. Was hoping for his 3 point shooting would balance out his deficiencies on Defense.

His defensive positioning and use of his lower body on D and in rebounding seem poor. And hopefully his shooting begins to look like last year. I was very surprised he entered the game before Woolfolk.

What?! Go to a game and watch the guy run the floor. He can run and jump with any big man. I would bet he’s the third fastest guy on the team straight line.

Maybe im wrong and he has good straight line speed but I don't think he is quick and twitchy.

I want to explain this, so it doesn't appear to be knocking on a player, but there are players who absolutely do not function on their own, or have the ability to generate their own offense, they don't have the hunger or drive to want to be dominate players. It doesn't mean they can't contribute, it means that they are complimentary pieces, that are reliant on other playmakers, to set them up.

Reiber is right now, the one player that is suffering the most, without Mulcahy on the floor. It doesn't necessarily mean Mulcahy is going to elevate the entire rest of the roster, but certain players need to be put in the right situation and need the perfect pass and space to score.

I think we are seeing severe limitations on Reiber and a bigger aspect, without Simpson and Mulcahy playing extended minutes to move the ball or create off-script plays. Reiber is a catch and shoot big man.....that is his strength in HS, it's what's worked for him in spots at RU.

The ball has to move faster than the defense to find Reiber open, for him to score.

For Spencer, with Pike seemingly not willing to play Simpson and let him learn with the veterans around him and with no Mulcahy, you have Spencer handling the ball way too much. He is supposed to be a spacing, spot up shooter, that stretches the defense. It is clear to me, that if you go 1 of 5 vs Temple from 3 (the only 3 made by Spencer at Mohegan, was when the game was decided in the late stages) and now 0-5 last night, Spencer is a complimentary piece.

Until Pike gives Simpson the ball and let's him sink or swim, learn and grow, Reiber is going to struggle, Spencer is going to be handling the ball way too much and BOTH players will remain out if sync.

I will also caution fans who are thrilled with 95% FT shooting from Spencer, to understand, YES that is a key stat......BUT, it has to be within the time and score of the game...can Spencer pump fake and draw a foul to get to the line?? What good is being a great FT shooter, if you don't demand the ball, generate a shot or draw contact??

If you are a 43% shooter from 3, which is WAY better than Geo Bakers stats, but you don't take and make difficult 3s, against the shot clock or to stop a scoring run by the opponent, then stats become hollow.

Reiber is the 9th or 10th player if RU is going to be consistent. Spencer needs Mulcahy and McConnell/Simpson generating space up shooting opportunities. Pike will sort this out and get Reiber into the role that maximizes his matchups. But I believe Woolfork offers more of a chance to be more consistent of a player. It is a big ask to lean on Simpson and Woolfork, when Pike should be leaning on upperclassmen like Reiber, but I don't see that working unless everyone on the roster is available and clicking.

I think Pike screwed this one up he barely gave him any minutes against the cupcakes in our schedule and last night Woolfolk was terrible had 3 straight bad plays in the second half but again he is a freshman but if Pike was going to play him at the 4 he should have had him in there more in those early games!!!

Agree with you as always Hawk that we are desperately missing Paul and that Simpson has to play more!! He hardly saw the court last night and as you say we need him we had no point guard
Also we NEED to run plays back screens anything to get Spencer open!! Secondly Miller has to be on the bench he brings zero to the team even his defense and as we no his offense is god awful and when he is on the court we are playing 4 vs 5 which on our already offensively challenged team can't be happening

Neither Hyatt or Mag handle the ball well enough to run plays.
They score off of rebounds (they miss the put back a lot) and chaotic looking jumbled, difficult shots to make after drives to the basket, with no interest in passing

Not really. Only Dean seems like he’s regressed. Miller is better than he was last year. Significantly so. He’ll never be a star, but I now believe he can be a solid role player over the next few seasons. Hyatt is shooting better than last year. He’s not worse than he he was - it’s just that he’s playing more and many of the flaws that landed him on the bench last year haven’t gone away. Mag seems about the same to me as last year too. Caleb is coming off injury but still doesn’t seem like he’s regressed. Cliff’s numbers have improved. His defense is worse but that’s because of the style we’ve been playing not regression. He wouldn’t have looked good in the zone last year either.

You're right. Only Dean has regressed. But the rest are the same...thats concerning, and not what we've seen from Pike...guys usually take steps every year. I was counting on that.

As we've only seen Reiber in limited role, I think it's hard to say what type of player Reiber is.

Yes catch and shoot is a strength, but I've seen him receive the ball on the arc, put it on the floor and attack the rim. I've seen him make some nice passes, I've seen him function well in the garbage area's down low, where he's a decent finisher.

We are not seeing any of that. Mulcahy would help. As a true facilitator he will help everyone, but I thought Reiber showed more last year then merely being a catch and shoot perimeter big man.

But the message board “experts” said Dean was a “lock” to start? “Book it”.
That his ability to score from all 3 levels would create a match up problem similar to RHJ.
His senior year (next year) he would be Top 20 scorer in the Big Ten.

When posing minimal skepticism (he only shot 12 3s last year) I believe the quote was:
“You sound like a real hater who is bitter that Dean proved many wrong this year man.”

The “experts” sure are quick to shout down people who actually end up being correct.

There is a big difference being guarded by slower footed centers that don’t defend on the perimeter and faster long athletes that can.

I was a champion for Dean starting at the 4 preseason. He hasn’t lived up to that, and it’s still early, and he may come around, but it’s time for him to finally break out and show what he really is….. either way. Saturday is crucial.

I think as you get into the teeth of the schedule and you run into assistant coaches who scour tape, teams are either unprepared or unaware of what Reiber can or cannot do.

He has such a limited amount of minutes that any offensive play beyond a spot up shot, is likely not going to be expected by an opponent.

The question is, if Reiber goes off script against an Indiana or Ohio State and attacks the basket off the dribble, something he might be able to do, is he a finisher at the rim??? Does he have the multiple post moves and footwork to move with confidence to score??

Basketball more than any other sport, is a confidence sport. There are players who are arrogant scorers and those who are passive scorers.

I will not place unusual expectations on a freshman, but for RU, Gavin Griffiths the 2023 4* recruit, is an arrogant scorer.....that doesn't mean he's an arrogant person.

What that means is he plays with a swagger that if he shoots the ball, he believes it's going in. He plays above his physical abilities because without meeting or talking with him, he plays with a shooting edge that oozes confidence.

Reiber has not played enough to be confident enough to score. It is a mindset to score.

Geo Baker is or was a confident shooter.....Jacob Young was an arrogant scorer, even shooting or attempting shots that many deemed out of control. But Jacob, Geo, RHJ, played with a confidence at times. Caleb actually is a very capable scorer, he just played behind other players who can score. It won't shock me if Caleb has a few 20 PT games this season

It is very difficult to see a player who doesn't get consistent touches, to suddenly breakout and become a reliable player. That has to happen in practice, when no one else is around.....the amount of hunger and work has to be put in, when it's April through October. I am not sure every player has that hunger deep down to be great.

It’s sad that with this board you can’t give an honest opinion without ppl yelling at you if there’s anything negative said. Hence why you had to put your first sentence.

But it’s absolutely true, Dean is a guy who is not going win on his own, he needs teammmates to set him up for him to succeed

I know you love Miller but he has not improved one bit at all just look at last night his defense is terrible he gets beat all the time and he is outright terrible on offense when he is out there we are playing 4 v 5 just please watch the games!!
I don’t love him. I think he’s an okay utility player as a back up guard. It’s simply not true that he’s worse than he was last year. He’s gotten better and stronger since last year.

I hate to say this.....Reiber needs to get tough and get physical and clean some glass. He is playing very soft. Keith Van Horn for all you NBA fans.
Many times being physical/aggressive is in your DNA. You either are or you aren't.

He is slow, has cement feet and doesn't do anything particularly well other than being pretty tall. Not a recipe for success.

Unfortunately I actually agree with both of you.....

Does Reiber defend a 4 or even 5 better than Hyatt?
We know Hyatt is a better rebounder on both sides
