Thank you Geno. When he responded to the Boston reporter who stated UConn has ruined women's basketball he said if you don't want to watch, don't watch. I took your advice, Geno! Why watch your obnoxious players celebrate when they go up 50, listen to Doris Burke root for UConn, and look at your smug face while you humiliate yet another opponent. It saved me a lot of aggravation. We all know who's going to win anyway. Those would have been two hours of my life I would never have gotten back.

Agreed for the most part. I kind of blame the top high school recruits for not giving other programs a chance. This is s sad state of affairs for women's basketball.

Bad as Geno and UConn make other programs look, you have to admire the powerhouse he built.
Unless he cheating, the way UConn destroys all that try to unseat them is on the other programs not finding a way to be more competitive.

The no mercy style of play Geno uses and the way the UConn players act is a downer, but unless other schools state beating them, it will stay part of the culture Geno uses to stay ahead of the game.
College WBB is not as good as it can be because of UConn's dominance, but every program would do the same if they could and their fans wouldn't think a thing if their players acted like brats if they won like UConn has been doing under Geno.

That's my take on UConn and the state of college WBB

Madhat, if we did what UConn did, I'd enjoy it for a year or two. But after that, I'd be like, can we get some competition?

I really can't say how I'd act , but I'm sure my first couple of years I'd be unsuffarable to fans of RU's opponents and everyone who talked to me about the RU WBB program ( outside of RU fans)

Don't know if I'd want more competition or not, but to keep me really interested in seeing games to the end, closer more competitive games would help me stay interested in watching.

It was a lot more interesting when it was UConn vs Tennessee every year. That was THE rivalry and was worth watching. Sad that Pat Summitt had her medical problems, because that matchup would have taken the women's game to unprecedented heights.

The UConn fan I was sitting with tonight at the WFF thinks UConn will be a top 10 team next year, with maybe 6 losses. Watching the team, I was struck by how few players Geno trusts will be back, so maybe that's right.

BTW, in case anyone's wondering, I am rooting for UConn on Tuesday.

Ridiculing sustained success is the highest form of jealousy.Championship coaches are arrogant starting with Lombardi and Bryant in football and Knight and Calapari in college basketball.Geno tells his opponents that UConn will win prior to games and he backs up his boasts. The fault for the non interest in womens basketball rests with the other teams not getting better .

Curious as to why you classify UConn's player's as obnoxious? Because the bench gets excited when someone on the court does something good? Two things: UConn never cares about the score, they are playing against the game of basketball and they aren't allowed to take a play off or they'll find themselves on the bench, and 2) if you were to watch last nights post game presser, the lasted question asked to Geno was "I've watched your bench throughout the tournament and noticed they are always into the game and always supporting whatever players are on the floor. How do you keep them in the game like that?".....Geno went on to explain that when they view game films, they also look at the bench. He said, "If I see players sitting there moping because they didn't play well or because they didn't get enough minutes, they won't play. EVER! I don't care who it is." So, Geno demands even things from the bench. Get mad at him. The players are only trying to stay out of his doghouse. That doesn't make them obnoxious.....and as far as Geno "humiliating" another opponent, maybe they should get better so they don't get humiliated.

Its beyond belief that a segment of the Rutgers fan base detests success because UConn destroys every opponent. How about following their mantra and start winning B1G Championships?

I have to admit that one thing that annoys me about UConn is the bench. I like enthusiasm, and the whole team being in the game. I don't like the ritualized hand slapping when somebody hits a three and the like. But that's not just a UConn thing - I dislike it when other teams do it, too.

Ahhh the defender of all things Geno - what took you so long? Sorry but high fiving when you're up 30+ is obnoxious

I think UConn is not going away next year. They will still have a great PG, 2 guard, 3 guard, 2 great 4's and a serviceable center. Who will play their system well. They can't have any major injuries and will lose a few games especially early on. Then, back to the E8 and anything goes. (About 8 pretty evenly matched teams at the top.) Meanwhile I do enjoy watching them partly because their opponents are showing a lot of heart, even if they lose by 30. (Did not see the Miss St game.) Texas gave a great effort and so did OSU.

I'm not defending Geno here. I'm defending our "obnoxious" players who are only doing what Geno requires them to do from the bench. I told you, they're not playing against the scoreboard. They're playing against how the game should be played, and UConn plays the game the same way up 5 points or up 50. You don't have to like it, but it doesn't make the players obnoxious because you don't. How do you know how your players will react on the bench when you're up 30 points?

There's a reason ENVY is one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Can't find anything wrong with how they play, so let's attack the kids on the bench because they're doing what they're told to do.....and while we're at it, let's also say how Geno humiliates his opponents because that's how he is, rather than just saying UConn is that much better than everyone else and it can't be helped. Haters gonna hate.

Look, we all wish we could have what Uconn has and has become. Geno is a great coach and legend. CVS could at least give him a good game back when. Wish she could again and we would all be happy.

Personally, I always welcome the perspective of fans of other teams. I appreciate Ewecon's comments on this board, and I often agree with him(?).

Separately, I enjoy watching UConn play, and I actually find myself rooting for them a lot of the time. It's hard not to admire their game, and you definitely can't fault them for being so successful.

I also understand the gripe about their bench overreacting when the outcome of the game is already clear. It can come across as smug and unnecessary gloating. But even if Geno didn't demand attention and enthusiasm from his bench (as per Ewecon), it's second nature for players to react to their teammates' great plays, passes, baskets, etc. They could probably stand to tone it down a bit, though.

"UCONN also has that lousy conference they play in."

Your point?
Just post UConn's OOC schedule ,I think they played some of the top 25 teams.
I root for the UConn Women to lose just about every game they play, but admit it's a darn good program.

No one questions how good they are. The way they rub it in people's faces is what bothers a lot of us

I understand that the team shows a ton of skill and that can be nice to watch for a while, but watching Uconn women is like watching the Globetrotters, a non competitive spectacle.

It is NOT like what Tiger Woods did in golf which is an individual sport.
It is NOT like what the Bulls did, because there is no general parity and the top national recruits will just continue to go there, especially if they want to have any chance to win a title. The Bulls aged and you knew that turnover would happen eventually and things would even out

The worst part is that I am forced to have them jammed down my throat by SNY, which completely taints my enjoyment of that station.

My point is it is a horrible conference with maybe Temple and South Florida who is good. Rest of conference is a joke.

It is. Not that they want to be there.

If you noticed, Geno really upped his OOC schedule to compensate. He always played a number of marquee OOC match-ups mixed with cupcakes. With the oBE, that would give UConn one of the top strengths of schedule. Now, very few OOC cupcakes (usually for a reason) to make up for the lack of competition in-conference.

That said, incidentally, the strength of his conference matters not. Dominated the oBE too. Lot stronger conference.

Yes their conference is a joke, so what? They are still a dynasty, and they will continue to dominate for the foreseeable future. That's just reality.
As for Ewecon's post on everyone else should get more competitive......I continue to wish

I agree. Fun for a year or 2 but the guy has won 30 games a season for the last 25 years, and this year never won by less than 10 points!! I guess as a fan it would be like playing Howard every week in football. How excited would we really get?

Has attendance suffered for the UConn women's team because of the weak conference?
Are UConn fans tired of the non competitive games?

Players on uconns bench would start for most other schools
i'm surprised there aren't more transfersout.

Attendance has suffered, but it isn't all about the blow-outs. Remember, very few of their games are competitive so I don't think you can blame the conference either. In fact, although I don't follow that part of the UConn message board particularly closely, I think they consider USF one of their main competitors both in conference and over-all.

Some of it is aging fan base, high cost, inconvenience of Storrs, bad times for particular games, and of course the availability of all games on TV.

As to the bench, there are really (over a 4 year career) very few players that don't contribute at some point. He also has walk-ons. While you have to be the right kind of person to take the strict and exacting practice and performance that Geno and his staff demand, the pay off is that you learn to play at the highest level, collect a few NC's, get much exposure and probably turn the experience into a huge plus on your resume. Most of the transfers, I think, would be players that don't think the pluses outweigh the minuses. But it is very few.

In the end all the noise about UConn is jealousy because their favorite team can't compete.Teams that have continued success at the highest level are hated by opponents regardless of the sport. The answer is to get better players so your favorite team can successfully compete. The easy way out is to complain which won't change the status quo one iota.
