Lovett decommits

Ash cant do much this season scheme wise on defense with no linebackers...they create Zero pass rush, cant cover and only one LB can actually tackle...

Boy, this was timed perfectly by Franklin. Fully expect him to commit to PSU Thu or Fri so it gets the biggest audience.

Anyone who follows recruiting even from afar like I do have known for a while the two most likely decommits were the 2 RB's. It would seem they'll end up where they wanted to be all along.

I am not so sure he is going to PSU. PSU has a couple of other RB targets. I think he will end up at Iowa. He was at the Iowa Michigan game.

He has a built in connection to PSU. It was said for a while that a PSU offer would put an entirely new spin on his recruiting. The timing could be Iowa's big win Saturday but the skeptic in me thinks it may have been PSU coming to NJ. We've seen it before.

well this just took another turn..
Now Lovett says hes still comming Saturday..still has RU in mix..and read the statement to Hunt..wow about RU still recruiting other RBS..
Despite the fact that Cherokee (Marlton, N.J.) three-star running back Johnathan Lovett has decommitted from the Scarlet Knights, there is still an outside chance that Rutgers can add him back to the fold by national signing day 2017. However, there is much work to do as Lovett admits that Rutgers' tough season as well as the team's focus on continuing to add depth to the running back position played a role in his decision.

This is just another reason verbals mean so little. A kid, AS HE SHOULD, explores all his options after verballing but expects the school not to do the same?

not what I said Drama Queen,I said Im fine with Ash as HC and running defense. Just think Merhinnger is not someone who attracts recruits due to his past resume,or this years results. Hire a proven Power 5 O Cord,it would help in recruiting and the staff as a whole experience wise.
You've been trolling the board with non-stop negativity all season. You know it. Everybody knows it.

Even if you were right about Mehringer, and I don't think you are even close, but even you were right, what value is there to you constantly bashing him here? How does it help anything? What possible positive outcome can there be?

And when you're done thinking about that, ask yourself how you could possibly know if and how much your words might impact a potential commit. The only truthful answer is that you cannot know. There's no possible way for you or any of us to know that conclusively.

So maybe try putting the program ahead of your obsession with posting negative shit about the coaching staff. You gain nothing for being so negative all the time. By being silent or even, gasp, positive instead, you would surely contribute to the marketing of the program to our recruits, if only in a very small way.

If you cared about the program, you'd think about what I said and you'd shut up. If you care more about yourself and your opinion on things, then you'll keep doing what you've been doing.

It's up to you.

Surely it was your rants about his prospective coordinator probably convinced him to keep us as an option. Good work.

Seems to me like you guys still have a pretty good class
We do and it may improve some.

The real question is, can we fans develop some pretty good class. All I know is if I'm the one talking about having class, we're in trouble. :)

These high school recruits want to go somewhere to be on a winning team. Sadly our coaches aren't able to point to the win column while they are visiting recruits, and high school kids are smart.

You sound like the kind of "fan" who would have no problem sending his kid to Penn State or Michigan.

Ash needs to earn his keep in the next couple months. All the rah rah coach speak doesn't go far when you can't even produce a good gameplan in a game for months on end..

Game plans have been fine. This "month's on end" crap is nothing but that: crap. We're getting crushed by teams with much superior talent and athleticism, across the board, but have stayed tight or beaten those with similar talent and athleticism (IU, Illinois (TO's crushed us), Minny, Iowa, New Mexico). Has everything been perfect, from the coaching side, absolutely not, but let's talk realistically. Let's not just start making stuff up, to fit a narrative, please.

Some people here are acting like this is the debacle that the fall of 2013 was when, in fact, it's come nowhere close to that nightmare! This class is still in very good shape my friends! Remember:

- 2013 class began to fall apart late Sept/early Oct. IIRC by October's end there were about 8-10 decommits already.
- 2013 class had, IIRC, 15 total decommits?
- 2013 class lost kids for a myriad of on, but more importantly OFF THE FIELD, reasons
- 2013 team was EXPECTED to better. A lot better. Same with the 2012 team that Flood inherited and got crushed at home by Kent State, looked like they never played football before against Pitt, and played one of the worst games I've ever seen in 40+ years of bowl-game watching, against VTech. Those recruits were watching a good thing, a pretty damn good thing, falling apart right in front of their eyes for 1.5 seasons.

- Ash has not made ANY promises to these kids other than "playing time" and how he is going to build this program. The struggles on the field this year were to be expected, and laid out as such, which is why you don't see guys dropping like flies. Unlike some here are acting. It's 2 kids - TWO - which is probably BELOW the average # of decommits nationally these days.

Lovett needs to understand that this is how you BUILD a program: you add quality depth at EVERY position! It's okay! Come in here, FIGHT, and EARN your spot! If you're good enough, and do everything that's asked of you for your position, YOU will either earn PT OR be the starter, no worries! It's all good!

I'm not surprised and I knew this board would get really ugly this season. But it's still disheartening to see how some people can't resist spreading their misery around as broadly as possible.

I'd bet he understands what you're saying.

What some of these kids don't seem to realize is it's a two way street. If you tell a school you're committing then start taking visits no staff worth it's salt is going to sit back and wait. They can't afford to. The two decommits knew they were #1 and 1A on the wish list but decided to look at other options. The RU staff reacted as they should.

Another thing is for all we know the staff may have been getting the impression for a while their recruitment was no where near as positive as it had been.

I think both sides are doing what they need to do. No problem with either.

So the fact that he wavered and all but begged for a PSU offer, causing Rutgers to look for fallback options, is one of the reasons he's leaving? See you next year at Beaver stadium.

Of course he's still coming but I don't believe what you just posted & think he's coming to commit to PSU or recruit for them. He was wearing a PSU shirt in September when he visited his girlfriend there. I doubt we're still in it & think Franklin is trying to make us look foolish...again...

I don't want to pick on you, because generally, I like your posts, and you seem like a nice guy. But you are preaching "class," when you were taking part in making jokes of the FIU/FAU player who was burned by hot water when his girlfriend threw hot water on him. That was not classy, but we all have different standards and views on these things.

That said, thank you for taking charge and shouting down the negatoids. It takes a lot of time and energy. And I am not being snarky about it. My mantra is to always remain positive, even in the face of negativity. I've lived it, and it has worked wonders. Laughing and smiling through adversity is much better than pissing, moaning, whining and crying about your current lot in life. That is hard to do for football fans or fans of almost any sport. Everybody wants to root for a winner. And football, probably more than any other sport, breeds lots of armchair QBs and coaches who want to vent their frustrations and offer their criticisms of what the coaches and players are doing wrong. There is a line somewhere that this can be done respectfully and positively, but it is difficult for some to do.

Penn State looking at him as an athlete not a RB.

Question for PSU followers: It is constantly said on here that recruits read the board and it affects them. Do you think your recruits get affected in either way by reading BWI with the constant Sandusky/defend Paterno stuff? This is a legit question and not trolling the scandal.

Not sure why you think this is all being orchestrated by Franklin. Did Franklin tell him to go to Iowa last weekend, too?

It doesn't make sense that he's mad at RU for looking at other RB's. It's not like the cupboard is bare in State College, and we are supposedly in the top 2 at this point for Slade next year.So if competition is the issue, then he's not looking at the whole picture.

It makes the most sense that he took the Rutgers offer sort of as a placeholder while he let the season play out. I'm not one who admires that approach, as we've been on the other end of it as well, and it's a good reason for having an early signing date to keep this from happening. It won't solve the problem entirely, but it would stop kids from changing commitments if they blow up as seniors if they decide to commit earlier.

Doesn't ever seem to come up, unless it's brought up by opposing coaches. Most of these kids are too young to remember Paterno anyhow.

He's mad that we're looking around is total BS. We just lost a RB commits so of course we're looking to add another RB (Taylor).

And the Hunt article mentions him coming with another recruit. Ash should keep him and his posse in isolation for the game. Don't want him poisoning anybody else.

Oh gee. Sorry, mad bad. I just can't believe that, in my abject cluelessness, I failed to realize that you're able to read the minds of each and every one of our recruits. Of course you know for a fact what they are all thinking. What was I thinking?

Now that I think of it, perhaps you ought to remind us all how critically important to the program, indeed, to the very well-being of the universe, it is that you continue your nonstop anti-coach rants. It's so incredibly helpful. Really, the positive benefits of you bashing the coaches repeatedly are far too numerous to count.

If I were Ash, I'd tell him to stay away unless he really thought the kid was open-minded about reconsidering. We were in a similar situation a year or two ago, and I thought it was stupid to wine and dine a kid like that.

Not at this point. It the same cast of characters repeat the same BS over and over again. I am sure most can filter it out. Most recruits don't spend that much time reading the message boards.

I was not seriously preaching about class. It was a joke. Which I thought was obvious since I made fun of myself w/it. Guess I will mark that down as a miss on my very long "it didn't work" list of things I've tried.

I don't want people to think I'm telling them not to be negative. I'm not. People should feel however they want. I wouldn't want someone telling me how to feel or think and I don't mean to be seen as doing that to others.

A football program is a product that requires fans, donors and new players. And like all products, it has to be marketed and sold to the potential fans, donors and new players. When people fail to contain their negativity on a public forum like this, it can only hinder that marketing effort.

Doesn't mean people can't feel any way they wish about things. Just means exercising some restraint in what is posted. And ideally, it would be great if people understood that they have the power to help market the program.

No I didn't. I never said not to have an opinion. I assume you have the ability to have an opinion and either express it in such a way as to not work against the marketing of the team to recruits or just keep it to yourself if you think it's counter-productive to voice?

I'm far from what anybody would call an optimist. My opinion going into the 2016 season was that we'd win 2-4 games. It was among the more negative of the predictions for the season.

I voiced that opinion a few times or so, but I didn't belabor the point. I let it go. Because why should I rain on the optimism of others? What would I have accomplished by having constantly shoved my negativity in the faces of those who were more optimistic?

Keep this kid away from RU this Saturday. He's only going to check out PSU and try to sway more of our Jersey recruits. Honestly, who wants to drive 5 hours of desolation and corn fields to get to the school, when it's a quick drive for him to the stadium. If he wants to visit, come to a different game. Ash can't make the same mistake he did with recruits coming to the Michigan game!

I wish we could tell him to go screw. But I'm guessing the coaches go full court press on keeping him. But usually once they decommit it's very hard to get them to commit again.

To be honest the whole recruits read boards is incredibly overblown IMO. It's a way for one faction of the board to tell another faction to shut up. It's a ridiculous theory to think a recruit will form an opinion of a school from something on a random free board. Every one of theses kids is on twitter etc and are numb to social media from a positive and negative side.

Agree. Normally when a kid blows off his verbal he's gone. -And yeah, it has happened on occasion where a guy retracts his RU commit and then joins the fold again later on, (Bah being one example of that), but that's not how things usually turn out.

It's up to the staff, of course, how much more time and effort they want to put in on Lovett, but I think it'd be a lot more beneficial if the RU coaches put their focus into finding a quality replacement for a guy who clearly has doubts about wanting to be here. (And who, in all probability, will end up going someplace else anyway, no matter how hard the Rutgers staff tries to reel him back in.)
