Good experience being in this conference. I mean, how many times do you get a chance to wrestle a world champion?

I stand corrected...Gross competed hard first 2 minutes....good exposure.
Good point that Snyder doesn't Maul people.

125- Paetzell RU wins by Med Forfeit, Score now 19-18 w the final, the great NATO vs DelVecchio to decide the match.

They gave us 6 points by forfeit with one match left? Someone explain that. I know they have a champ coming up next, but do duals not mean that much?

They know with Tomasello #1 rank up next they will still win the match. They didn't need to wrestle their hurt 125Lb kid which is why they didn't want to start at 125.

Ugh ... Team is closing the gap ... Those 2 bonus points take downs in last 5 seconds ...

Probably doesn't have a backup at 125... If it's a minor injury, then no reason to burn a redshirt...

Come on ... Lead with So. Plainfield win, close out the other ...

Not a bad showing vs a legit top 5 team on the road. Wish we wrestled Giraldo at 157 and JVB at 165...might've eked it out. That said, not disappointed with this performance. We will dispatch Northwestern reasonably easily on Senior Day and draw someone like Edinboro for National Duals. Lets finish with 2 more dual wins and head to the B1G tourney.

Considering that David Whinfrey won an AAU national championship in 1950, which was the top tournament in its day, if he didn't start there, he certainly finished number one.

That's a good example, but I was keeping it to the modern era and rankings.

Seems like a good guy to me. He talks the wrestlers through the match and lets them know what is up. Think this was the third time I've seen him on BTN.
He seems like a good, communicative dude. I just haven't ever seen a ref that animated and/or communicative, and since I'm relatively new to wrestling (about two years following it), I just wondered about his style.

No shame in this loss. A better effort than we had with Michigan. I've had a pet peeve that our guys don't shoot. You wrestle the way you train and I'm thinking that we don't train to be aggressive. Now I have another peeve. Clock awareness. Too often with almost no time to go we let the points happen that kill us. If your gonna lose then lose but don't give away a major. Step back. What are the refs gonna do warn you for stalling? It happened twice tonight. Let me steal one (with respect) from Jersey Boys:

"How do we continue to let up those last second TD's. Correnti wrestled tough but we need to fight off those last second scores."

i though reffing was comsistent and fair. the challenge is that not all refs require full break of holds or control (watch JVB frustration and Gross match from Snyder perspective) but he did every time so he was fair and balanced. even if we give Paetzel regular win w/o forfeit then 23-15 is pretty respectable.

184- Martin turns Gravina, 9-2 final. RU up 12-10

Nick Gravina is one of my favorite wrestlers to watch because he gives it everything he has all the time. His 2 on 1 arm drag takedown has served him well against lesser ranked wrestlers, but I think at this point everyone knows that it's his “go to” move. Because of that, he's very "scout-able". I'm afraid that without another good takedown in his arsenal that he's never going to break through and become an All American. He's also relying on his cardio to wear down his opponent and hopefully steal the win in the third period. Again, it works on lesser ranked opponents, but not All Americans. I just wish he could develop a better neutral offense so he can realize his full potential, which in my opinion is very high. His takedown shots are average and I feel that his style is more suited to a stand-up, hand fighter type. That’s fine but I think if he develops some type of trip (Mocco style foot sweep) then he'd be better off. I don't see him reaching the podium this year without a lot of luck so I think it’s time to focus on improving his standing offense in the off season to get him over the hump for his senior year. A foot sweep (Mocco style) or an outside, behind the knee trip (Quenton Wright style) would put him over the top in my opinion. I also think that a Denis Tsargush style foot hook single leg off the Russian tie would also be a good option for Gravina. I think he could also improve his positioning as well because he does get sloppy late in the matches and gives up takedowns. I just want to see him get better and reach the podium. If he improves his standup just a bit, maybe with the moves that I mentioned, he’ll end his career as an All American.

Damn JVB just continues to impress. Call me crazy but I think he's going to be a dangerous out for anyone who runs into him at B1G/NCAA tourney.

I agree, John Van Brill continues to impress me too. I really like his wide open style because it unconventional and very dangerous. It’s kinda like a funky, scramble style similar to Anthony Perrotti. This kid is worth investing in! I suggest the coaches, Pritzlaff in particular, spend as much time as possible honing Van Brill’s technique. He needs to find the right balance between his wide open style and maintaining position. If he improves just a little bit I see this kid becoming an All American, just like Perrotti.
