MATCH THREAD: #13 RU Wrestlers vs #4 Ohio St, 7pm, BTN TV, lineups, story :

I agree, John Van Brill continues to impress me too. I really like his wide open style because it unconventional and very dangerous. It’s kinda like a funky, scramble style similar to Anthony Perrotti. This kid is worth investing in! I suggest the coaches, Pritzlaff in particular, spend as much time as possible honing Van Brill’s technique. He needs to find the right balance between his wide open style and maintaining position. If he improves just a little bit I see this kid becoming an All American, just like Perrotti.

Trust me, they know who to "invest" in ;)

Be careful how much you want to "tweak" his style though. What you need to do is coach him how to manage close matches and avoid falling behind early. He's got caught a few times this year so it's more about keeping him from becoming reckless early in matches. He has the body frame for 165 so what he needs is to push the strength and conditioning. I had a very similar build and regretted not putting more effort into increasing my core strength. I'm really looking forward to seeing him Lewis and Pagano go back to back to back next season.

i though reffing was comsistent and fair. the challenge is that not all refs require full break of holds or control (watch JVB frustration and Gross match from Snyder perspective) but he did every time so he was fair and balanced. even if we give Paetzel regular win w/o forfeit then 23-15 is pretty respectable.

The holding 4 on JVB was ludicrous. He let go of the kid's wrist, and he kept it behind his back and the ref didn't call the break. What a joke. If the kid was going to be cute and hold his arm behind his back, JVB should have been given the opportunity to grab it and turn him again.

NCAA really needs to do something about consistency. There are not that many crews, and you can get wildly results. Many of these things are pretty objective and should be easy to clear up. There are issues with escapes, pins, and starts that vary way too much. There are also issues with counting riding below the waste, and even back points. Some guys start counting immediately, other guys seem to wait a beat (or more last night) before counting one.

Ash at 141, Giraldo/Deluca at 149, Lewis at 157, JVB at 165, Pagano at 174, and Gravina at 184...that's a world of hurt for most teams at those 6 weights next year. Wonder if MVB takes the bull by the horns at 149 next year.

Because it's Penns Grove. Salem County doesn't have much in terms of wrestling, and it's just not a good school.
Seems like Salem County in general is like the red headed country cousin of NJ counties. It's the most rural and would fit more in place with places like Alabama than NJ. Not the strongest athletic county competitively either as you mentioned.

Yes, Salem County is quite red-headed. I'd say that's a decent description. Mostly because there's nothing there but like some farms, a power plant, and a rodeo. I grew up on the border of Salem County (in Gloucester County) and spent a lot of time there. In addition to being very rural in much of the county, places like Penns Grove and Salem are very low income.

That RU student who made the Stereotype Map of NJ nailed it. Salem County was pretty much all within the "Pretty Much Alabama" part of the state along with some of Cumberland County. Did you go to Kingsway HS? Sounds like you are from Woolwich Township.

Yeah, I went to Kingsway and taught and coached there for 4 years as well (not wrestling). Grew up in Swedesboro. Live about 10 minutes from there now.

To those in the know, any idea what type of recruitment the two older Kinner brothers are getting (from Kingsway)? Lower weights that placed pretty high in states recently. I don't see them necessarily as top 25 recruits in NJ, but borderline.

Nick Gravina is one of my favorite wrestlers to watch because he gives it everything he has all the time. His 2 on 1 arm drag takedown has served him well against lesser ranked wrestlers, but I think at this point everyone knows that it's his “go to” move. Because of that, he's very "scout-able". I'm afraid that without another good takedown in his arsenal that he's never going to break through and become an All American. He's also relying on his cardio to wear down his opponent and hopefully steal the win in the third period. Again, it works on lesser ranked opponents, but not All Americans. I just wish he could develop a better neutral offense so he can realize his full potential, which in my opinion is very high. His takedown shots are average and I feel that his style is more suited to a stand-up, hand fighter type. That’s fine but I think if he develops some type of trip (Mocco style foot sweep) then he'd be better off. I don't see him reaching the podium this year without a lot of luck so I think it’s time to focus on improving his standing offense in the off season to get him over the hump for his senior year. A foot sweep (Mocco style) or an outside, behind the knee trip (Quenton Wright style) would put him over the top in my opinion. I also think that a Denis Tsargush style foot hook single leg off the Russian tie would also be a good option for Gravina. I think he could also improve his positioning as well because he does get sloppy late in the matches and gives up takedowns. I just want to see him get better and reach the podium. If he improves his standup just a bit, maybe with the moves that I mentioned, he’ll end his career as an All American.
X2

FYI, both will redshirt next year
Who will start at 125 next year if that's the case? McCabe graduates after this season...would Mackall slide in at 125? Goodale probably wants to groom Paetzall as our future 133 guy. Mulligan will be at 197 if Correnti RS next year.

100% agree. the variability in reffing is silly. Watch RU at Iowa last year then watch Mich St at RU and only one set of reffing can be correct. the other crew needs to resign. both can not be ok. It is not fair to the kids.
