Wrestling MATCH THREAD: Rutgers Wrestling vs. No. 2 Michigan

Let me tell you regardless and vanbrill wins or not he's caught a lot of crap he looks great.
OK everyone gave him kudos at the end of last year. That he was wrestling great. So that's been over for a while now.

Two thirty second periods coming up after a scoreless sudden victory period.

Van Brill starts on top, and Storr gets a reversal to go up 4-2

Regardless of the outcome MVB looked great and he had his opportunities to win in regulation vs a top 10 opponent. I'll take that.

Van Brill going neutral after giving up the reversal. MVB needs a take and a ride out

Van Brill wrestled a heck of a match, but fell short. This is a match he can build upon. Hopefully the confidence does not fade moving forward.

Michigan leads 12-4

That’s probably a match MVB wins later in the year if he wrestles the same way. Aside from Aguilar, everyone so far is about what I would expect.

I was going to say the same thing. I know van Brill lost, but he took it to storr tonight. That was arguably some back points

SeaBass not happy with his match. I'm surprised he couldn't do more on his feet.

MVB battled and looked good for MVB. In on 2 deep singles that he needed to finish. I still don't understand why his primary O is looking for a merkle or chin whip.

Robbie Kanniard making his Rutgers debut against No. 9 Will Lewan

Lewan scores a quick takedown to go up 2-0 in the first thirty seconds

What happened to Kannaird? Not one shot the entire 1st just tie ups. Last year he would shoot now he looks tentative.

Now a screwed up toss by him? WTF. This isn't the same kid I saw wrestle last year. I don't think I seen him try a toss once last year.

Kanniard a bit of a lost puppy in the start of the match, but he is staying in Lewan's face. Score ends 2-1 after the first.

Kanniard starting the second period on top

Kanniard fights off his back after giving up a reversal. 2-1, quickly turns to 6-1, with 1:30 left in the second

Don’t think there’s a better pairing than Rutgers underclassmen and inability to score from bottom

Kanniard attempts a lat drop on the edge, and goes to his back, giving up a takedown. Officials taking a second look to see if backs are scored.

What is with us giving up all these bad reversals.

Lots of guys look lost in some of these situations, which is very concerning.

Debut match. No excuse but he looks like deer in headlights vs an AA caliber wrestler

Lewan awarded backs after the official review, going up 10-2. After the restart, Kanniard gets an escape, making it 10-3. Period ends that way, with Kanniard having a lot of work to do heading into the final period.

Kanniard will start the third period on bottom

He looks horrible. Deer in the head lights is a perfect description. Not one shot the entire match. Hope he's not wrestling with Grello in the room.

Kanniard becoming more aggressive, but Lewan appears to be too strong for Kanniard to finish

Kanniard loses 11-5 after the RT point is awarded. If Kanniard wrestled the entire match the way he did the third period, that might be a little tighter of a bout.

Michigan up 15-4 heading into the break

Score is probably way different with Suriano and Sammy but they’re also missing Micic down low.

Janzer should win his match and Poz gets to wrestle someone more on his level with Amine out. The other 3 have their work cut out. Would be nice to see Grello gut one out.

Our offense has been extremely limited and basically non-existent tonight.

Off topic, but how much did our news mats set us back? A friend and I are texting as I type and neither of us remembers.

He didn’t look great but 1st Varsity Match. Kanniard fights to the end which I like. He will never give up. He will be very good. Give him a little time. Might take his lumps this year. Especially with all B10 matches.

My mid-match takeaways

125 - Aguilar absolutely cannot have that happen. Ragusin is a very legit true freshman, but that CANNOT happen
133 - Britton fought hard. He is a room guy, and supposed to be our 3rd/4th 133lber. Can only expect so much.
141 - Do not panic if Rivera, or anyone, does not dominate the first period. For one, Mattin is no slouch. Two, at this level it is about wearing your opponent down early, and scoring late.
149 - MVB is at the weight he belongs, and has the potential to really put together something special this season, as long as he stays confident and attacks
157 - Kanniard wrestled the third the way he should have wrestled the entire match. I don't think he would win, but it would be a much more competitive bout

Agree with everything but Aguilar is very disappointing and IMO just not showing progress.
