Basketball No. 24 Rutgers Basketball fends off Merrimack 74-63

Ace with 25/10, showcasing a myriad of gorgeous moves and shots. Other than that, not much to cheer about tonight. First game I missed and the crowd sounded quiet - not surprising given the subpar effort, especially on D. Let's hope we know how to turn it on against good teams.

Jeremiah Williams looks terrible out there. We are going to get hammered inside all year long. Can’t believe we went into this season with Ogbole as our big.

I feel like we need to shorten our rotation. Somebody out of Davis, Williams, Acuff has to sit.

I know nothing about Dylan Grant but something tells me we are going to lament not developing him some more in these games. Our D is so bad.

Beyond Ace and Dylan its not a good supporting cast
That is what some national analysts and NBA scouts reported after watching us practice, but people here didn’t want to hear it. That said, two elite talents can take us pretty far, but maybe they need to start getting more selfish, and start taking more control of things.

even with 23 points it feels like Ace needs to play more selfishly.
yep. he definitely passed up some open 3s i thought. Dylan and Ace need to be taking at least half our shots; they were under than tonight. How about setting some screens against the zone , especially off the ball for Hayes or even Ace down in the short corner. We do this at this high school level for gods sakes, it’s not rocket science

Taking solace in most of these Sisters of the Poor matchups having the same game script, early lead to the point where the result isn’t really in doubt and cruise. Have to hope they turn it on against better comp.

I’m baffled by the PJ Hayes situation, 75% eFG and really no turnovers but he plays 14 mins against a team running exclusively zone

Being at the game, JWill had a decent game, Pike even said it. Jordan dribbles into traffic too much, but is a great passer. Good job on O boards.

That said … WAY too many defensive lapses and “matador” D.

Big E with best game yet.

RU fans need defensive effort to get into the game, it’s a different brand of basketball than what Pike has had this team playing in the past.
Its rather apparent that this team has great difficulty playing man to man defense even against mediocre opponents. The few times Rutgers played a zone defense Merrimack had trouble getting open shots.Pikiell better seriously consider playing more zone defense because the higher level of competition in future games will easily score against Rutgers man to man defense. There is no evidence in defensive improvement and the substitution patterns at times lacked having 3 point shooters on the court.
