No. 7 Rutgers Rowing Set to Compete in NCAA Championships Friday, May 28 through Sunday, May 30

Rutgers Crew in the Top Ten nationally?

I'll take it -- particularly as a legit, NCAA-sanctioned championship ranking after decades of Pops's ham-fisted efforts to overstate the ranking of his men's crews.

Pops early teams had the pedigree and this all stopped after '05-06. Rutgers was still taken seriously by other teams in these early 2000's but once funding is cut and having a legitimate recruiter on the coaching staff it won't work. Also men's Sprint's and IRA league is the equivalent to NCAA if that was what you are alluding to. Will take a new coach to bring them back along with school upgrading status to Varsity.

Quick....What Big Ten schools have a men's varsity rowing program?

Right. It's a Varsity sport at Wisconsin, no where else in the BigTen. My point is that's it's not about making it a Varsity sport at Rutgers. Most believe that it has to be a varsity sport in order to compete and that's not true.

It might just be an issue of resources and what the Athletic Dept could provide to them as a Varsity sport versus what they get as a club team for being like a regular student organization perhaps?

That said, Rutgers' club team competes with Wisconsin's varsity team as both are in the EARC. Interestingly enough, that group of schools is unquestionably the strongest academically of any athletic affiliation that Rutgers will likely ever be part of.

If it’s not an NCAA sport would RU have to follow Title 9 regs and add a women’s sport before Men’s Crew?

Sorry, that's my bad - I was not alluding to the distinction between the IRAs or the EARC Sprints and the NCAAs. I just meant that Pops had a tendency to over-inflate his success in the eyes of people who didn't know much about the sport, implying that his crew was ranked - say - 8th in the nation, if it was ranked 8th in the EARC.

Steve's done a lot for Rutgers, and Rutgers has done a lot for Steve. I think it's a long shot that men's rowing ever ends up back under the Athletic Department's purview, and I wonder what happens to the club program when he retires.
