56 years ago today-a world without internet snow weenies to warn us of what was possible-a storm suddenly came together over NJ,dumping 18 inches of snow in some areas.

The forecast was for light snow.If they were referring to the flakes composition, they would have been correct.

I went to the movies that afternoon-can't remember what I saw,but it wasn't 25 cartoons-,and was surprised at the amount that fell in the 3 hours that I was in the theater.I walked home through the snow to see The Wizard of Oz on CBS that night.

We had no school until Thursday, the normally well organized street department was overwhelmed, making little or no preparations.

They err on the side of Snowmaggedon today, but that's better than what took place then.

I was 3, still living in Queens.

Most of the side streets in NB were a field of untouched snow. No tire tracks, footprints etc and no activity. We were out of school for a few days and no BB practice or games. Looked beautiful.

Was in 1st grade in Highland Park. I lived right next door to my elementary school and was amazed that they made me stay home for two days to make snowmen and fly down the hills of Donaldson park on our sleigh discs.

I was 7 living in Brooklyn. We hap epic snowball fights then, 1 side of the street against the other. We would build forts with cubby holes and sort of tunnels. Would stay out all day.
Not sure I remember this exact storm, but I remember a few big ones around that time. Of course snowstorms all seemed bigger when you are that small. Living in Brooklyn with cars parked on both sides of the street, very few with driveways, it took quite a while for the old plows to clear the streets. Usually the cars would be covered for days, with dads and sons eventually digging out.
