Well,not actually.

Sunset will be getting later starting today, with most areas around here setting at 4:30 PM.However, sunrise will also be getting later until it peaks at 7:21 AM on New Year's Eve,remaining there until January 9th.

I still miss 1974,when Nixon put us on almost year round Daylight Time.It was great still having a few hours of daylight after getting out of work at 3:30.

the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere is actually december 21 , so
we have 7 more days to go yet.

The OP is pointing out that the time of sunset changes to later in the day prior to the first day of winter. Last week sunset: 4:31 pm (earliest sunset all year), This week sunset: 4:32 and getting later each day.

So why does the sunset get later even though the day is getting shorter (i.e. sunrise is continuing to get later by more than the change in sunset)? Inquiring minds wanna know.

camden...i would think it's due to the earth's tilt and the precise sunrise/sunset location within the time zone. daily rise and set changes don't exactly sync everywhere.
