The Big Ten is one of the premier conferences in college football, so you’d think we’d have premier officiating. Sadly, all too often the officiating is terrible. Today, against Michigan State, was another example of that. So often the officiating seems one sided, where an action taken by Rutgers would be penalized, while Michigan State would do the exact same thing and not be penalized. I assume this is unconscious bias by the refs, favoring the bigger name teams in the conference, but the conspiratorial part of me sometimes wonders if it is a more conscious effort to ensure that the bigger name teams succeed.
