OT - 2-3 Night Summer getaway

Everyone seems to love Charleston. I see a couple of you mentioned it as a possibility that you're not taking but for those who have been, what sold you on it? Is it the kind of place where you can spend a couple days on the beach while spending a couple more doing in-town type things?

Looking for something a little different for early fall so this could be a good idea.

Yes, we stayed at the B&B the William Smith Inn in Geneva. Cozy & relatively cheap. Wineries all around there, and Geneva has bars, restaurants, diners, etc. Relaxing and fun trip.

Has anyone tried a place along the Finger Lakes and has something to recommend?

Sayreville, NJ is cheap year round. The New Club in Parlin might even have a pool.

In the montreal vs Quebec debate, I have to put in a very strong vote for Quebec. Toronto's coo, as well.

Sagamore Hotel in Bolton Landing, NY. It on Lake George and within a 5 hour drive.
You won't be disappointed.
High tea at 4 pm in the conservatory. Lake excursions and plenty of restaurants to choose from without traveling too far. Historical points of interest or just relax. Not that far away either.

I posted in some other thread about staying in Charleston recently. Was there 2 weeks ago for my niece's wedding. Stayed on Folly Island, right on the beach (about 15 minutes from downtown Charleston), less than 20 yards from the surf at high tide (lots of beach erosion in that area); water temps were near 80F, which was great and they're in the mid-70s as late as early October in that area (see the link). Rentals aren't cheap, but still way less than NJ: we got a 5-bedroom place with a huge great room and awesome decks for "only" $1000/night (for 4 nights; we had 5 people paying, so it wasn't too bad - and prices would be about 40% less in October).

Charleston is a great small/medium city with tons of history, including a beautiful collection of 18th and 19th century mansions, churches, military buildings, etc.- we took a horse carriage tour that was only about 90 minutes and worth it. Charleston is also loaded with great restaurants (Bourdain just did a whole show on that) and we sampled a few with 167 Raw (incredibly fresh seafood, shucked and plated right in front of you) and Grocery (lots of Low Country specialties) being the highlights. Some nice, downscale restaurants in Folly Beach, too.

As an aside, was originally going to drive the 770 miles, figuring that would be a 10-11 hour drive if traffic wasn't bad, but for a short vacation we compromised, as the wife just didn't want to be in the car that much: we flew to Charlotte, then drove the 3 hours to Charleston (about a 6 hour trip including airport time); flights to Charlotte were $200 RT vs. $600-$700 RT to Charleston. No idea if that's typical or not. Spirit flies from Philly to Myrtle Beach, but the timing of the flights was no good.

..And 848789 will be one of the first on this board to be spending that last week of August at Metlife Stadium for Bruce!

SC is a long way for 4 days. 2 very long days of travel at best just to get there AND BACK. As ive never been to Charleston and frequented Myrtle Beach as a kid Id hate to do one and NOT the other. Flying very expensive for 4 days.

Agree with the overnight in NYC. You can even keep the price down by using groupon.

September/October flights between NYC and Charleston were about $220-$240.

Toronto is a useless City. Like a poor mans version of any U.S. City

Did you know they now have "gender revealing parties" and sprinkles (basically a shower for second and third kids). Then they wonder why we call them the Free sh$t generation. Lol
Sprinkles?? wtf?

Wow, I monitored flight prices for several months and they were never below $500 from anywhere in NYC or Philly or in-between to Charleston.

Vacationing in Charleston/Myrtle Beach first week of August. I've been monitoring flights. Picked up 4 RT tix Newark to Charleston yesterday for $585 total on United. Follow @airfarewatchdog on Twitter and you find all kinds of really cheap flights. Last year my family of 4 flew to Tampa for under $500.

Have a dumb question- do you need a Twitter account to follow that? And if you set up a Twitter account, can you have it send new Tweets via e-mail? Just don't want to have to start checking something else with work e-mail, personal e-mail, phone messages, texts, etc, etc.

I think you can go to their website and set up an alert that will be emailed to you. Will monitor NYC area airports or specific destinations. But if you want to jump on cheap seats before they sell out, Twitter is more immediate. No account needed, just search @airfarewatchdog.

St. Michael's, MD (waterfront town on the Eastern Shore) is an excellent relaxing getaway for a married couple. Tons of first rate BandB's if you are into that, along with great places to eat, water activities, art & antiques, a really good bay museum, and charm out the wazoo.

If you want to go further afield, Charleston, as many have already mentioned, is another great spot. The place oozes history, but puts it in a modern context, and the city's revitalization is apparent just about everywhere. The place has a good vibe. I was kind of afraid when I went there that I would encounter the famous "southern attitude" that I HAVE encountered in other places - but was nowhere in evidence here. The city was surprisingly cosmopolitan. I was very glad that we went there and we will be going back soon.

That's funny, that is when I will be down there too. Did not think about flying, though. I do not mind the ten hour drive, and flying can be such a hassle. I like to stay in Murrel's Inlet when we go to Myrtle Beach - a bit quieter, and closer to Charleston for the couple of nights we will spend down there.

Fly to Quebec City. It is a super charming place. Very romantic. You'll feel like you are in a French provincial town. http://www.quebecregion.com/en/

(Not 100% sure you can do so direct, or how long it will take, but it is one beautiful city.)
Did my Honeymoon in Quebec City and then in Montreal.1954. I'm sort of surprised that they are still there.

I see RT flights in the $250 range, but not $150, which is what you're getting - $250 is still way better than the $500 flights I was seeing for a couple of months leading up to our trip - maybe less people travel to the deep south in the dog days of August.

Are these Twitter offers limited in terms of dates/times or can you pick and choose? We had very narrow windows for leaving and coming back when we were traveling in early June. Also, when I go to that airfarewatchdog website, their fares are no better than what I see on sites like Expedia or Travelocity - are these one offs? Just curious...

When I booked there were 5 seats at that price. Probably limited amounts for each flight. Supposedly Tuesday at 3pm is when discounted flights are posted, so it makes sense those fares were gone by Wednesday.

We are driving up to Cooperstown then Saratoga then NYC where we live 40 miles from and never go. Could go to Outer Banks but we are bored with the beach.
