OT: 2019-20 NY Mets Offseason "Hot Stove" Thread

They are also easy to hate
Amigo, I thought teams that suck don't even rate high enough to hate? Oh,I see, the Mets are ready to make a run, have a 2 time Cy Young winner, and broke the Rookie HR record. The worm is about to turn.

Mets sign veteran masher Matt Adams to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training. Good insurance policy. But like most insurance policies, you really hope it's not needed.

Can we sign a backup catcher please?

Can we sign Kevin Pillar?
I think Pillar is a good player, but not going to be signed by the Mets. Conforto, Nimmo, Davis, Marisnick, Cespedes (insert joke here) Smith and the ability to put Mcneil in the OF cover the outfield. Pillar and Marisnick both are R/H hitters so there is no need for another RH hitting OF. Rivera or Nido are going to be the backup catchers. If Cespedes and Lowrie are healthy, the 26 man roster is already set barring any injuries. No room on the pitching staff.

If your 2X CY Young award winner can't get wins how in hell are they going to make a run?? Don't they still have Diaz??

Here comes that Dom Smith trade for a 37 YO second baseman.

I like the return Pitt got for Marte but they are just very very far away.

So, if one was to consider that the chances of Diaz and Familia being as bad as last year again most likely won’t happen. Not expecting 50+ saves but near 40 and sub 3.00
And if Cano is closer to his 2nd half numbers.
Where would we consider we have a real weak spot other than defense?
Betanses, Lugo, Wilson make a decent bullpen if Above mentioned are at least average. There would be no weak spot in the lineup and we still have a hell of a starting staff.
I am really looking forward to getting this started.

Mets fans are cute when they have hope (i.e., before the season starts).

Even cuter when Yankee fans hope for injuries again rather than have their $30 mil man play...
Will be fun to see if a 2nd year Alonso hits more HR’s than their 4th year slugger too
Which one,Stanton or the guy their pissed got passed by a true Rookie who didn't have 100 ab's the season before his rookie season, gaining the All time HR Rookie record.

They want Stanton 30+ mil injured and Judge may get out slugged again even though he plays in a band box

DeGrom named Best Starting Pitcher Right Now by MLB Network. Verlander 2, Cole 3, Scherzer 4.

I feel bad for the quality Mets players like JG. Wasted the 2 best years of his career. But hey, at least the Wilpons are selling the team. Too bad the buyer is a criminal and essentially kicked out of the financial world by the SEC.

Stay classy Mets. Thanks for the future material! :)

He may come back with his 3-4th best years too. We all shake our heads on the craziness of how they don’t score for him. You really aren’t insulting us too much there.
As for new ownership...seems like he has you worried.
Glad to see you guys back in the Met threads again. It wasn’t as much fun having you talk only about the Mets in the Yankee thread. Lol

I think Cohen may change the Mets vertical pinstripes for horizontal ones.

I’m in early with deGrom’s first 20 win season, Diaz 40+ saves. Offense top 5 in NL
Ok- defense sux lol
You on Meth or Oxie??

But seriously folks:

40+ saves is a really big ask, considering that only one player did it last year (Tyler Yates with 41). Hell, only six players had 40+ save OPPORTUNITIES last year! I think we can agree that Diaz' 57 saves in 2018 is an outlier. Kinda like Roger Maris' 61 homers. We can't expect him to do it again. But that doesn't mean he sucks.

20 wins for deGrom is also a lot to ask. Yes Verlander and Cole both did it last year, but on a much more prolific offensive team. But a better bullpen should get deGrom a few more wins. And if the Mets ARE a top five offensive team in 2020, then maybe 20 is attainable.

And yes, I do think the Mets can be a top 5 offensive team in the NL. Here's where they ranked last year:
  • 7th in runs scored
  • 7th in RBI
  • 6th in batting average
  • 6th in on base percentage
  • 6th in slugging percentage
  • 6th in OPS
It would not take a quantum leap!

I think it is pathetic when fans take credit or blame or the teams they root for, even though they have no influence on the team. When the Yankees win, do you get anything? Do they give you a bonus? Do you get a ring? Do you even get a free T-shirt? Don't be a loser. Take pride in your own life and things that you control like your job, etc. Unless you are a loser in your personal life, then taking pride in the yankees is all you got.

Yes I am a Mets fan, but I am also highly successful in my life and both my kids are in Harvard. I take pride in the things I control and not obsess over the Mets failures or the success of the Giants. I realize that sports is just entertainment and does not reflect personally on me either positively or negatively.

Agree with this 100%...Only pro sports team that would ever allow me to ever lose sleep again would have to have someone I personally care for on it. Other than that, it is a distraction that adds some fun to my life- good and bad.

Yeah- 40+ could be a stretch but my point is that he could go back to being reliable. Almost no chance he is as bad as last year. Same with Familia. On the other hand- Wilson was pretty much who he is and we should expect that again, Lugo may not be as good but he has always been stead and if health DB changes the BP. If these guys step it up, it leads to my deGrom statement. In his 1st CY, it was a complete freak of nature that he didn’t win 20 with his eyes shut. Last year, I have that number at 18...if he has another year similar to the last 2, I do expect at least 18.
The offense, will depend on BVW and the puppet. Does he allow Davis a full year? Does he try to force fit Lowrey- can Cano be at least his 2nd half and not 1st? Does the lineup protect Alonso.
Could be top 5 as last year it pushed that number in almost every catagory.
And as fans, we are allowed to always have great hopes for the upcoming year.
I actually feel the Yankees have just as many questions if not more...

Let me see...1) is Cole the Houston or Pittsburgh pitcher?
2) will Sevi be healthy and be at a high level - other starters???
3) 1B- who is playing there and can they be as productive as last year.
3) can BP be as good?
4) 3B- Is Urshela a 300 hitter or really a 250 hitter- but at least you have Andujar just in case but he sux in the field
5) Stanton
6) CF
7) Can Judge stay healthy
8) can Sanchez stay healthy
9) Zero chance backups and guys from minors can ever duplicate what they did last year

Anything else? It’s ok, keep laughing

Yankees will be very good this year but don’t act like there are no questions or concerns.

To add to this point. The Yanks won 103 games and added Cole. The only question we have is.....will we win the WS or not? No excuses.

One of the most amazing seasons I have ever seen where every single move worked better than expected. With all the injuries, most teams would have folded...
This, my questions for the Yanks going into your season. All are valid
