I happen to agree.
IMO, Cohen and now Stearns view their own free agents in four groupings:
1) Must re-sign. We don't want this guy sniffing free agency, and we'll overpay if we must. See Francisco Lindor. Also Edwin Diaz.
2) We want to keep him, but we'll let him test the market. If someone blows him away, so be it. Otherwise, we'll swoop in once the market is established, and flex our financial muscle then. See Brandon Nimmo.
3) Sure we'd like to keep him, but only on our terms. There will be no bidding war. See Jacob deGrom.
4) Muchas gracias, adios.
My guess is that Alonso is in group 3. If someone values him higher, he is gone. I suspect someone will.
