OT: 2024 NY Mets Season Thread

I live bet the dodgers in top 9 down 2-1. I was shocked it was +550. Floored I thought it would be closer to even money. $20 to win $110. What a bet!
Would love to lose this bet bottom 9! Still think it was a steal of a value

I’m Mr take a pitch until he throws a strike
3-0 Groved ok. My belief good take

3-1 Absolute perfectly straight pitch thigh high right down middle and you stare at it

I watch a ton of baseball. Love the game. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team so bad all around when you add up the pieces.

When they pitch decent their bats are feeble.
When they manage to score runs their pitching implodes.
When their defense needs to be good, it’s poor.
They can’t throw out baserunners, and they can’t steal bases.

There truly is nothing they do well all around.

What free agents want to come to this cursed disaster?

Game was over as soon as in typical Mets fashion they had bases loaded and one out in the 9th and couldn't score. Really; was there any doubt after that?
It was over when they couldn’t get through the 8th by booting 3 double play balls

Every player in the lineup are platoon bench players on most teams with exception of Lindor / Alonso and Nimmo

And with how Lindor and Alonso have played this year - they deserve to be in the Bench

Culture sucks with this team - on field and in locker room - explode it asap !

When does Cohen start to think about eating a chunk of Lindor contract ? 2nd worst contract in baseball behind that of Rendon.

Mets are 4-14 since May 11.

This says it all:

i

Gelbs and Darling saying bench is dead
No energy ,

It would be nice to have a 12-15 Mets lifer to cheer for but keep Alvarez and take calls on everyone else
I was at the second game last night, and there was certainly no energy in the crowd. I got the sense that it wanted to cheer, but had no reason to.

Don't know about energy on the bench. But I do think it's a chicken and egg thing. Does energy breed winning or does winning breed energy? I suspect it's more the latter.

The season died in San Francisco just as it did last year. 10-24 since starting 12-8. What they've been doing is beyond losing. It's either dull and lifeless or excruciatingly, soul sucking. They are not suddenly THIS bad. There's some sort of culture rot within this organization. Everyone, minus Alvarez, is touchable.

4+ more months of this.

Here is the Brand Sproat start from Monday.

7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 0 HR, 1.89, W(1-0)

Also Acuna starting to get it together now. He made some swing changes based on some help from coaches and seems to be working so far. Doing very well since the change so hopefully that continues. We could use someone like him in the lineup.

Or maybe this team is just not that good. Why do you say they are not suddenly THIS bad? They were this bad last June. They won't be this bad this June. But they won't be all that good either, because they just aren't that good.

I’m not even sure Cohen cares anymore. he came in like gangbusters trying to buy a championship and when he realized was in over his head, he kind of disappeared. He's practically admitted this year would be a waste and now it's looking like next year might be the same.

Don't know about energy on the bench. But I do think it's a chicken and egg thing. Does energy breed winning or does winning breed energy? I suspect it's more the latter.
I even wonder about all the gripes regarding defense, base running, or the "they hit when they don't pitch, and pitch when they don't hit" gripe. If they hit more consistently would these other concerns be less glaring?

I look at that lineup and see, .209, .236, .214 from the 1-2-3 hitters. And it's not like it get's any better the rest of the way through. One player in the starting lineup last night has a BA over .240

I know baseball has changed, BA's are down everywhere, but I feel it's hard to build energy when it's 3 up, 3 down inning after inning.

I'd have to dig in on the starts, but career wise, Alonzo Lindor and Nimmo are all well below their career averages. McNeil too.

Is Alonso now a sub .240 hitter? Is Lindor a guy who will always bat .200ish the first couple months of the year, maybe? Maybe Citi field plays into that? I dunno, but these guys are typically better then this. Or at least they were.

Cohen is really focused on the 8 billion casino plan
Does that take away from Mets , no idea

Thought I saw him sitting behind home plate for game 1 yesterday he was closer to visitors bench , guess to be close but not overbearing close to dugout and team

The more I look at it, the more I worry that the Mets minors have a long way to go. The key pickups from last year's in-season trades look, at best, OK. Acuna is having a bad year, but his historic performance shows that he has little pop and never had on OPS over .800 except 200 at bats one year in in the Dominican Summer League. Clifford's career OPS is a bit over .800, but he's got a .245 average and like 220 Ks in 640 lifetime at-bats. Gilbert's numbers are better, with a lifetime OPS over .850, but he hasn't gotten many at bats yet, is injured now, and is already 23.

Others are doing well enough. Jett Williams looks like he'll be a good little player, but he may be out for a while, maybe the year. And Sproat has good stuff, but he has pitched only 44 minor league innings, had okay-ish numbers in college, and is already 23.

While there are players in the system that will help in the majors, I'm worried that there is little top end talent. I'm starting to think that Stearns has a lot of work in front of him to create a top system.

Starting pitching in the minors has been surprisingly good, problem is they will not help us this year. Think Acuna will be fine. Issue I have is with the injured everyday players. Will they be able to bounce back, if so how long will it take?

On pace for their worst year since 93 and 81. If this pace holds, of course

Last year, it took until August to reach 10 games under, not May. Despite giving back all the ground they covered after starting 14-7, they were actually 27-27 at this point and got to 30-27 with a home sweep of the Phillies before promptly losing 9 of 10.

I don't think anyone expected this team to be good, myself included. I also don't think anyone expected a 66-win pace through 2 months of the season. It'd be one thing if they were the White Sox or Rockies, who are completely devoid of talent and know it. This Mets team is decent enough to hold late leads, but does EVERYTHING wrong in the late innings to give them away. In the last week+:

Up 7-2 in the 7th @ MIA
Up 3-0 in the 7th @ CLE
Up 2-1 in the 9th vs. SF
Up 6-2 in the 8th vs. SF
Up 2-0 in the 8th vs LA

No baseball team should lose all five of those games.

Just blow it up already. These guys are not winners. Sadly, you couldn't give Nimmo or Lindor away right now.

Exactly right. Losers like Alonso, McNeil, and Lindor have even rubbed off on Nimmo. I never thought Nimmo’s spirit could be crushed like it appears to be. Everyone is just going through the motions.

His velocity (both fastball and slider) has been down about 2mph from his 2022 velocity, and it seemed like there was even more of a dropoff in his last outing. Also, his slider hasn't been as sharp as it was in 2022.

Hey ___________, this is Stearns , any player on roster you may be interested in ??? Lets talk .

Um No. your entire team sucks …CLICK

Why did Lopez throw glove in stands? Turned away and saw glove go in stands.

3 players actually “hitting” this year. JD, Marte, and Bader.

Trade Value?
1. JD? No one wanted to sign him in the off season. Maybe a low top 30 prospect off a team.

2. Marte is as fragile as they come. Maybe someone takes him as a 4th outfielder/ glove and arm in late innings. Doubt we get much.
3. Bader doubt he starts anywhere. Again maybe a top 30 prospect.

Those saying break up the team……how? Do we get rid of McNeil by also including a pitching prospect? Doubt we get much in a straight up trade.

He threw his glove into the stands because he was ejected, by the third base umpire no less.

The reason for his ejection is as yet unknown.
