OT: 2024 NY Mets Season Thread

Even though Pete and McNeil have had a down year- I still hope we can lock Pete up- I kind of like the idea of Alvarez, Pete, McNeil, Lindor, Vientos for a few years
My totally uninformed guess is that neither Cohen nor Stearns feel any allegiance to Pete. They view him as one of many available free agents in the free agent class of 2025. They will assess him in the context of how he meets their needs, relative to the other available options, and at what price.

Pete Alonso owes the Mets nothing. He made that clear when he hired Scott Boras. There will be no hometown discount.

Similarly, the Mets owe Alonso nothing.

Let the marketplace speak.

Not a good day for Brandon Sproat. Five innings, nine hits, six runs, three homers, and perhaps most troubling, zero strikeouts.

He didn't walk anybody, so there's that.

I don't think we should plan on seeing him in any year ending in 24.

Not concerned yet. Sometimes it takes time for players to adjust to a step up in competition.

Maybe Soto ?

I’m still cautiously optimistic about Baty. Maybe silly of me !

Acuna - yikes ! Thought this kid was decent

Gilbert / Clifford / Parada - ugh.

Inability to develop hitters has unfortunately been a sustainable problem forever in this organization

Not concerned yet. Sometimes it takes time for players to adjust to a step up in competition.
One fact about Sproat which may or may not be relevant. The baseballs used in AAA and in MLB are for some reason slightly different from those used in AA and below. Some pitchers have found the AAA/MLB balls to be slicker and harder to command, and take some getting used to. Whether this has been an issue for Sproat, I cannot say.

You make a conclusion on one bad game?
No. I make a conclusion on three bad games. And more importantly, on the fact that August 31, which is the deadline for roster promotion for postseason eligibility, is only nine days away. In other words, he has exactly ONE start to prove that he's ready for the bright lights this year. You think he's gonna do it?

He was just drafted a year ago and is about to pass the most innings he's ever thrown, silly to even think about a call up in a pennant race

Gilbert has been hurt all year so I wouldn't be too concerned about him. Clifford is having a good year don't just look at the BA. He's also young for the league by a couple of years. Parada stinks.

Is this really that terrible for first year in AAA?

I would wait and see if he is a candidate to possibly enter the rotation next season when there figures to be multiple openings, As long as he doesn't go the ways of past names we've heard about in recent years such as Dom Hamel and Mike Vasil who will be 26 and 25 respectively by the time next season starts yet still haven't made it.

Mike Vasil was never even close to the type of prospect that Sproat is so not the best comp.

Agree. Though I've only had limited glimpses of Sproat, his stuff looks legit. It's too bad he's gotten lit up AAA, as the Mets still and will need innings, particularly in the bullpen, from someone with stuff like Sproat has. There just ain't much in the minors.

Mariners 1-8 since smashing us and fire their manager

Fred Savage No GIF by The Grinder

Dedniel Nunez is with the team and is likely to be activated today. Brazoban is optionable. You may draw your own conclusions.

Alumni news from Houston:

Justin Verlander made his return on Wednesday. Six innings, two runs. He will provide the Astros a nice boost down the stretch, but will finish well below the 140 inning vesting threshold.

Ben Gamel, whom the Mets had DFA'd, was claimed on waivers by Houston and immediately inserted into the starting lineup. Had a nice debut last night with two hits and two RBI.

Great way to get the series going! Hope they can get Braz back on track. He was pitching really well for Miami before coming over.

Bad day on the farm.

I think Brazoban will be optioned. I think it's either he or Young, who is the only lefty in the pen. Unless they DFA Ottavino, which if they haven't done by now, I don't think they will. We'll know soon enough.

Blackburn getting hit pretty hard 💩💩💩💩💩
First figuratively, then literally. Blackburn took a line drive on the wrist which will be tested further today.

Not his best outing. Sixteen hitters, seven outs. Two of his seven outs came in a line drive DP. The last one came on the liner that forced him out of the game.
