OT: a good friend is STUCK IN CHINA

I run a surgery center. Thankfully I was smart enough to stock up on masks early last week because this week, with so many people panicking and buying masks, the distributers are rationing them.. 4 boxes every 3 days.
A lot of products I buy are on back order because they are manufactured in China.
Aside from the health implications, this virus is going to cause a lot of trickle down effects.
MrScrew has us stocked up with rice, ham, and some freeze dried meals.. All of which last 20 years. We have a generator, butane for a burner to cook on inside, my pantry is always stocked and I've got about 125 bottles of wine. We're good for a little while.

125 bottles of wine.
That's planning ahead at its best.

Well now you're no longer just an idiot - you've added racially insensitive (if not worse) to your accomplishments. Congrats. Given the remarkably high genetic similarities across all humans, there's simply no way for a virus to "target" any racial group or gender (every virus in human history has infected every race/ethnic group) - just because the virus originated in China has nothing to do with who can be infected - everyone can. A viral bioweapon that only impacts certain populations is a ridiculous concept.
You realize you're playing Whack-A-Mole with a conspiracy nut, don't you? Somewhere a village is missing him.

Absolutely. Most of the time I can ignore most conspiracy nuts, because they're fantasizing about past events; however, when they spread misinformation about ongoing events, like this, I feel compelled to call them on it, since there are more than a few folks out there who are at least somewhat susceptible to this kind of thing.

People don't die of influenza. They die of complications from influenza - primarily pneumonia. The majority of influenza-related deaths are seen in people with compromised immune systems - the very old, the very young and the otherwise infirm.

You're not smart enough to be making the sorts of allegations and accusations that you're making, here.

People don’t die from cancer either - they die from the complications caused by cancer. Just saying

That's not even remotely true.

Most people who die from cancer do so as a result of metastatic cancer. That's not a "complication."

You guys are being silly. You CAN equate viremia, sepsis to metastatic cancer. The terminal event is always cardiovascular in any particular disease process. That is what UMRU meant. You know that.

Eeeeeeek where this thread went!:Shocked
Well then back to the main topic of the thread I saw on the news a few days ago that a child from that first flight from China to the airbase in California had developed a fever and was taken to the hospital for observation. Don't what the outcome of that was...if nothing or n-coronavirus. Don't know if any relation to Nuts' friend.

I've been slowly stocking up on non-perishables including food, OTC meds, batteries and other things.

It's still a terrible analogy. In cancer, it's the tumorous cells that kill. In influenza, it is some separate disorder brought on by the disease.

Mrs. Screw : not disavowing the possibilities but how many times have you done the same thing over the past 50-60 years...let’s see ...Cuban Missile Crisis , AIDS, SARS, MERS, Chernobyl and Japan’s Nuclear Meltdown, WTC ... the list of potential Armageddon and Apocalypses has been going on forever ... don’t forget all the African viruses which come about every few years... Ebola... sure this new virus is bad but if you think doing this is going to give you more of a chance so be it ... honestly when your time is up ... it’s up...thinning of the herd , natures way...

You're not quite correct on this one - you're parsing words. For instance,
Last week I signed a death certificate that had cause of death: influenza myocarditis and it happened in an obese otherwise healthy young person. You actually find the virus in the myocardium. Still we see plenty of influenza pneumonia and bacterial pneumonia as a complication of influenza.
And last month I signed one that said metastatic malignant melanoma but the cause of death was related to the chemotherapy and sepsis. I don't list sepsis as the cause of death but the melanoma. But what do I know I'm just an old physician and microbiology major from Rutgers.

Can't speak for Mrs Screw, but I know I've never been concerned enough to stock up on supplies (I'm 57). This is different. Ebola was obviously not going to be a global problem as it requires close contact with an obviously sick person for spread. SARS and MERS did not go from nothing to 100 million people under quarantine in less than 2 months.

There is potential here for the global economy to be disrupted for a long time if this isn't brought under control, since almost everything is made in China or from materials that come from China. Locally, who is going to want to go out for supplies if everyone around is infected and hospitals are full? It may not even be possible if stores run out of basic needs. It may not matter in the end, but who knows.

Hunkered down in HK. I sell n99 masks. Waiting on a new supply. Hoping to get here by end of Feb. Sold out my last order in 4 hours.

People are nuts. I went to the supermarket and there was a run on toilet paper because people thought they were gonna finally close the border with China.

So my wife asked me to buy some. As I was walking home some guy stopped me and asked where I got the TP and would I sell him half. I said "No. I'd rather wipe my ass with it than sell it to you!"

There are a hundred people on this forum that don't buy your bullshit and probably Million in China that don't buy your bullshit...but I don't need backup.

Your a piece of crap shill for the MSM - your not bullying me - Soros bitch.

They caught on to Bill Gates in Africa - he will be shot on the spot if he ever shows his face in Africa again - Bitch out

What's it like to be known as the most moronic poster on an entire message board? I'm certain that close to 99% of the people on this forum would believe what I have to say (and the generally reasoned links I provide) over what you have to say and the beyond nutty links you provide.

Also, Gates has made many trips to Africa without being shot - my guess is because the Gates Foundation has donated close to $15 billion over the past 10-15 year to improve health and reduce poverty in Africa.

You're a f*ckin' moron and should be dissected for the furtherance of medical science.

God Bless America and our First amendment right to freedom of speech!!!

That's a highly ignorant statement.

You truly have no clue do you? Cancer is uncontrolled cell growth that kills by causing damage to the organs the cancer invades. So it is the complications that kill you, just like a virus. Many differences on how you get the point of organ failure, of course - I can’t wait for you to “educate’ me on those. I need a good laugh.

It’s pointless arguing with geniuses like you and @RU4Real, but maybe you can find a coloring book that will explain it to you. It’s always safer to just ignore your typical brilliant statements, but the name calling got my attention this time.

It’s crazy how the internet has made everyone an expert on things they have no business arguing about. Conspiracy “experts” have never been reputed because....??

Not going to get into the middle of the argument over death, as there is a whole literature on underlying or proximate cause of death vs. immediate cause of death (first link explains all this nicely). For example, cancer can be the proximate cause of death, since the death wouldn't have occurred without the cancer, but the immediate cause of death could be sepsis or organ failure caused by the cancer. The proximate cause of death is what is usually reported in "cause of death" data - some really cool data on worldwide causes of death from 1990 to today in the 2nd link.

https://ifs.harriscountytx.gov/Pages/Glossary.aspx

https://ourworldindata.org/causes-of-death

This is directly from the cdc website:

Why doesn’t CDC base its seasonal flu mortality estimates only on death certificates that specifically list influenza?

"Seasonal influenza may lead to death from other causes, such as pneumonia, congestive heart failure, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It has been recognized for many years that influenza is underreported on death certificates. There may be several reasons for underreporting, including that patients aren’t always tested for seasonal influenza virus infection, particularly older adults who are at greatest risk of seasonal influenza complications and death. Even if a patient is tested for influenza, influenza virus infection may not be identified because the influenza virus is only detectable for a limited number of days after infection and many people don’t seek medical care in this interval. Additionally, some deaths – particularly among those 65 years and older – are associated with secondary complications of influenza (including bacterial pneumonias). For these and other reasons, modeling strategies are commonly used to estimate flu-associated deaths. Only counting deaths where influenza was recorded on a death certificate would be a gross underestimation of influenza’s true impact."

I would imagine that the deaths due to coronavirus in Wuhan are grossly underestimated as testing resources are limited, so they're not testing everyone who dies. Social media indicates many bodies are carted off directly to be cremated, that crematoriums are running 24 hours a day and that tens of thousands have been cremated without being tested. Of course, at the same time the total number of cases is also grossly underestimated so who knows what the true death rate or serious case rate is. I think that will become obvious from cases in other countries, the cruise ships, etc.

What I think is becoming obvious is that this is as communicable as the common cold so even if it turns out that death rates are relatively low, it has the potential to spread very rapidly through a community, causing extreme stress on healthcare systems. We'll know soon.
