OT: Ed Orgeron named new LSU HC (full time)

Well if he keeps Dave Aranda on staff and gets an OC he'll be okay but it isn't the choice I'd have made. I respect them not wanting to be played by Herman but then go out and do a proper search at the end of the season. Orgeron wasn't going anywhere, so go see who may have been available.

Like most of the big name brands LSU recruits itself and Orgeron is a recruiter, not sure that's what they really need. If he loses Aranda or doesn't get a good OC, there still could be problems.

Sometimes you may regret getting what you wanted. There are those who wanted Les Miles gone, and they're getting a replacement who's only success as a head coach was part of a season taking over for Lane Kiffin at USC and this year sitting in for Miles. I'm not saying that it can't work out, but that seems to be a bit of a crapshoot for a program like LSU to take.

Read one rumor that Orgeron is going to go after Kiffin as his OC. Normally I'd say that's crazy but Orgeron and him did work together at USC/Tenn. He'll probably have a freer hand at LSU than under Saban at Alabama. So if he isn't able to land a HC job, I wouldn't put it past Kiffin to leave one SEC west team for another. With Aranda/Kiffin as his coordinators, I think Orgeron would have a good shot to do well there provided that actually comes to fruition.

Will be an interesting case study - guy was once viewed as too stiff / intense / limited / whatever - but then went on to display a brighter / lighter / inspiring side at USC as a 'got nothing to lose' interim ... and then again at LSU - has he transformed in a way that this is now his true style?
- or will the Pressure / Burden of officially being contracted to be the actual Head Coach cause him to drift back into that old somewhat less dynamic version of himself ?

Well we know he has an unlimited budget and kids love playing for him. If he takes CEO role he could do quite well.

IF he takes the CEO role? That's the only role he could take, he's not an x/o guy. That to me is the problem if he doesn't have a good staff below him. The money for a staff will always be there but same could be said for Hoke at Michigan or Strong at Texas in finding an OC.

You have the budget, but you still have to be smart in identifying the right people. Now of course you know I think he's got a very good one in Aranda provided he stays. Kiffin would be good too provided he comes. So there are some ifs in there but with a good staff he's got a decent shot.

I do agree players like him a lot but I'm sure that can be said of other coaches as well who didn't work out. I wonder how much players like playing for Saban? I'd guess they may not like him like they would an Orgeron but we see his results. Liking the coach is nice but doesn't necessarily lead to results.
