OT: Electric vehicles

I'm down here in southern Gloucester Co., close to the area denoted by that funny NJ map as "Pretty Much Alabama". I can tell you from many nights fielding questions about Tesla and my car at the local VFW that regardless of the fact that Tesla might be the most American carmaker in existence when the origin of its parts and the manufacture of its products are considered, it is strongly labeled as a "tree hugger" company. Many down here are either directly or indirectly associated with the oil industry (or just strong supporters of fossil fuels) and by default, they believe they should not consider EVs or Tesla products as a whole.
Yes, that paragraph of my experience was all anecdotal and I'm sure a great number have your approach to vehicle purchases in red, blue and purple states alike. In my experience though, there definitely is an animosity toward the company that is easy to find in the rural parts of our state. I don't think I'm being unreasonable to extrapolate it to other culturally, predominantly rural states as a whole.
Perhaps the best way to change some minds is to get them in the car. Plenty of bullseyes on EVs and there's a shit storm of FUD that one needs to sift through through to get to the truth. Most people (as we've seen from this thread) simply stop at the headline. It's a shame.

Fair enough, but maybe the oil dominance of that area may have more to do with the love of ICE vehicles and that EVs and the leading EV company, Tesla (there, I said it!), is a threat to their livelihood. Kind of like West Virginia coal country. Monmouth and Ocean counties are generally "red," and there are quite a few Teslas around. I know two people who own Teslas, and we generally don't get into politics, but one is conservative, and I am guessing the other may be conservative, and they are huge Tesla fans. I think that is because they have money, like new and interesting technology and owning and EV makes economic sense to them. So couple my anecdotal stuff with yours, and we have 🤷‍♂️ ?

Guess I am. Always thought Tesla produces their own batteries than buying from 3rd party.
I've explained on multiple occasions that Tesla has supplier contracts with Panasonic, LG Chem, and CATL. Add BYD to the mix. This is fantastic news. Tesla will buy every cell their suppliers can make.

This year, Tesla began manufacturing their in-house 4680 cells. Austin MY is the only vehicle so far to have these cells.
While other auto makers have 1 contract with 1 supplier, Tesla has multiple contracts with multiple suppliers. Tesla is also locking in long term contracts directly with mining companies and has hinted of getting into the mining business themselves. Do you see why I chuckle when I hear "the competition is coming"? This is what scaling to extreme size looks like.

I did. Most were very impressed by its immediate torque and although they still don't want to own one (most are not sedan folks), they owned up to the fact that much of the FUD they'd been fed was nonsense.
One guy in particular (that raced several different kinds of cars at the local speedways) declined my offer to give him a ride. The reason he gave: "I'm afraid I'll like it."

Not necessary to watch the whole video. Start at 1:30 and in a few minutes it's clear that the "journalist" who wrote the WSJ hit piece is a lying POS.

Checking the author's Twitter page reveals she used the app: A Better Route Planner (an excellent app for non Tesla EV owners), BUT CHOSE TO IGNORE IT! So instead of charging at DC fast chargers at 350 kW, she chose to charge at level 2 chargers (20-50 kW) at car dealerships. She literally went out of her way to charge at slower chargers. Unreal. How does this get published?

Holy video slurpfest, Batman. 🤣

Prior to viewing the informercial for Tesla, uh, I mean the informational video, folks should probably first go look at the video page for the super-objective YouTube channel I've linked below. No need to watch the videos, just look at the list of videos. Seems somebody either has a massive and undignified man crush on both Elon and Tesla. Or else they're being slipped a little envelope under the table to market Tesla products.

Surely such a social media channel can be trusted as a source of entirely objective information about EVs. It's not propagandist in the slightest. Nooooo. 😉

Once again, you completely miss the point. We all know you're triggered by anything Tesla. Try to stay on topic.

The author of the WSJ article went out of her way to charge at slower chargers, then published an article shitting on EV charging infrastructure.

What infrastructure? Ya mean the one that will have 3/4 of the country living with rolling blackouts this summer?

LOL. One of us surely missed the point and it wasn't me. And it's you that is straying off-topic by posting obvious Tesla propaganda posing as rebuttal to some other article.

The video itself is disingenuous at best and more probably, if it's funding can be sourced back to Musk or Tesla in some way, then unless that's clearly mentioned in the video(s) or YouTube channel, then it falls under the category of disinformation. It's a misrepresentation to claim it's some sort of objective analysis of the WSJ article when in fact it's merely a marketing message for Tesla. Such behavior is a lifetime bannable offense in most automotive forums where people who work for vendors must clearly identify themselves.

Unless this thread has magically become entirely about worship of Tesla or Musk, then I'm being far more on-topic than you by pointing out how untrustworthy the posted video or YouTube channel are in any objective discussions about electric vehicles. Not that most of the folks here need that pointed out to them.

What's ironic is that either you DO need it pointed out to you, or else you're being intentionally deceptive towards your fellow forum members regarding your intentions in this thread.

I doubt it's funded by Tesla. People do that for free, so why would Tesla pay?

You could be correct. Maybe the person/people producing it are earning enough via YouTube to be worth it. That's certainly within the realm of possibility.

But the speed and quality of the production, combined with the relatively small number of followers of the channel, make it look a lot like they are being funded from somewhere besides YouTube advertisements. Nothing definitive, but it's pretty suspicious-looking to me.

So...deal?
No EV for me until the technology improves in about 10 years and even then I will see. Also don't like the fact that most of the lithium in the batteries comes from China. Only 93,000 charging stations in the US right now. Brandon put aside money for another 500,000. That is a start but the number that is needed by some estimates, is over 1 million. All this will takes years to put into place. Anyone who doubts that should remember projects like the big dig and the Meadowlands Mall Mistake to name a few. I could go on and on about this mess but I am cooking pasta. Time to eat.

So in other words--no, you don't actually believe your prior statement that 3/4 of the country will have rolling blackouts this summer.

1st, I said that is what is being reported. 2nd, yes, I do believe it could happen this year. 3rd, We all know this country has major problems with its energy grid. 4th, I said I don't want it to happen.

The truth about all of this is slowly coming out.

A battery shortage now too
Who could have guessed
Even Musk said US not ready for the kind of push the politicians are driving (CCP's USA puppets)

All these tree-huggers jumping on the band wagon will regret it.

'Hillary once said Russia and China were funding green energy non-profits
In the 70s they tried crippling US with "global cooling"
Then the cooling was a no-show and it became "global warming"
Then the warming stopped and it became "climate change" or just weather change
No rain? Climate change
Too much rain? Climate change.
There are more satellites over the ocean now so they name storms out there
Then the headline is "Most named storms in history"
Of course China and Russia laugh the loudest
They got a US nation where 1 in 7 is on meds to fall for the weather hoax
The genius of it is that politicians/MSM/Corp grifters get to scream "Emergency!" now for a crisis that is supposedly decades away (no recent predictions came true)
They never have to show progress - just panic and FUD.
Personally I would like an electric car, but not from a CCP industry built on the wreckage of US
You know CCP already has plans to move part of its population to US after the fall
They work every day to take US out and the ninnies on meds and yoga pants line right up!
I see some are starting to wake-up so we'll see

Alright well if you actually believe that, then I'll repeat--I'm willing to bet you the price of a Tesla that it doesn't happen.

Should share some of this in the real estate thread. Have to think home values are impacted when this all goes down

He has another set of talking points for that. It still finds its way back to the Ds and Commies but via another subway line through the depths of Batshitville.

And I will repeat, I hope it doesn't.
I didn't ask if you HOPE it happens, I asked if you actually THINK it will happen like you said earlier. Since you seem unwilling to put your money where your mouth is, I can only assume you know some of what you're saying in here is just ludicrous and are just trolling.

If you knew how to read, I said I think it could happen. Now crawl back under your bed, climate change is looking for you.

Don't get the idea anyone here is frantic about climate change. There are a host of immediate benefits to EV ownership that have nothing to do with climate or "hugging trees."

No idea where this illogical hatred comes from. As if gas vehicles were ordained from heaven to be forever. Of course car tech was going to evolve.

And there are a lot of things that are wrong with EV ownership. Be honest with yourself. Dems are pushing EV'S because of "climate change", Brandon and plenty of them have admitted it. Cars using fossil fuels have evolved, please do some research.

Lmao. Do research. It's safe to say I know more about cars than you ever will.

Go write a letter to "Brandon," then. We're talking amongst forum members, not amongst gov leaders.

EVs have been around in a meaningful way for over a decade now. Even bullish automakers aren't likely to fully phase them in until the 2030's. Some "push". Real inconvenience to those of us who aren't looking to go electric yet.

Maybe you do know more........nah I DON'T think so.
Our so-called public servants got us into this mess. They have to be held accountable EVERYWHERE!
