OT: Electric vehicles

I'm completely baffled by you. You own a hybrid, right? So why the obsession about finding charging?
I just got the hybrid a few weeks ago so I’m tooling around with charging/mileage but I didn’t get it solely for that reason. FWIW, I had a deposit on an EV before bailing for the hybrid. And my wife has had a deposit on the all-electric Volvo XC90 for over a year now and the release date has been pushed back 3-4 times. So, i’m trying to get my arms around what appears to be a charging network mess before I end up with the Volvo EV in my driveway.

Newsflash: You have range anxiety, because you purchased a vehicle that only gets 30 miles of electric range.
Newsflash: I don’t care about range with a hybrid. It’s great for running errands and driving local.

But have fun waiting in line for a supercharger or make sure you plan your family vacation near a Wawa or AMC movie theater parking lot. I think you would have more credibility on this thread if you simply admitted the charging network in this country sucks balls but Tesla has made the situation slightly better so owners don’t want to blow their brains out when taking a long trip.

EVs are for 2 or more car families (which most are). One EV and one ICE. Not complicated. However, you are right. Having only EVs is still a big issue due to the lack of chargers.

Screw the Volvo full EV. Check this one that will be out in late 2024. 690 miles of range!! This is cool, and an interesting concept.

"the Ramcharger's gasoline engine is only used to make electricity rather than directly power the wheels too. The Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 under the hood powers a generator that can be used to power the truck or recharge the 70.8-kWh battery, which is huge compared with typical PHEV batteries.

Ram estimates a full charge will provide 145 miles of pure electric driving range, and when the battery's state of charge dips below a certain percentage, the gas engine provides a security blanket by extending the range."

This is likely where we are heading. I have a Grand Cherokee lease up and we already have a Yukon for the family cruiser. The EV would basically be used to drive to my main office 10 minutes away or HQ in Philly, about 45 minutes away (and they have a bank of chargers in our parking garage) and general around the town driving and kids sports.

My credibility speaks for itself. Go back and check if you like. I've owned an EV for 4 years. You've owned a hybrid for a month.

Non Tesla charging infrastructure does indeed suck, but it's slowly improving.
The Tesla network is outstanding and continues to expand. I've used it numerous times over the last 4 years and zero issues, never had to wait, never had to look for chargers. Road tripping with Autopilot and the Tesla network has been a pleasure.

Come on…I know a bunch of Tesla owners and “outstanding” is far from how they described it = “tolerable”, “not terrible”, “just need to plan”…NOBODY has said it’s “a pleasure”. I’m all for EVs but you sound like the RutgersAl of EVs. I WANT TO GO EV but there are so many wrinkles that aren’t even close to being ironed out.

EV owners are like a cult. Without pushing the EV to advance the market, their investment dies on the vine. I remember pumping gas in HS during the oil embargo in the 70's. People bitching about waiting in gas lines for 45 minutes to an hour. Today is about fast food, fast deliveries and EV owners choose to wait in line to charge to travel. No thank you until improvements are made on a grand scale. At least admit the shortcomings before you try to become salesman of a "not ready for primetime" product. I'll thank you in advance as I'll ride your coattails after you guys pave the way for the rest of us fossil fuel guzzlers, to make the switch when the switch makes sense.

You consider cars investments? I didn’t buy an EV with anyone else in mind. Don’t care that it might not be for everyone. Who makes decisions like that? Sounds kinda cultish. Charge at home and its free. Have never waited in a line, wake up and have a full charge. Have an ice for longer trips. Can’t beat it, don’t care who buys or doesn’t.

How's it free charging at home? You charge off solar?

How isn’t it free? Please explain.
Only if you have solar panels. I know of one person I'm a friend of who has his outside with a solar panel. I know of 2 others who put in a line inside their garage and they pay around $50 a month extra because of the charging. I've been offered to drive them, told they get $$ for bringing in customers and I was very interested in the Kia EV9. Discussed it with my wife and decided at this time it isn't worth it FOR US.

Well if we are talking about the more traditional solar panels with street visibility that are eye-sores it’s not free based on the decreased value of the home.

I even looked into having a charging line with receptacle installed and it isn't cheap and as I said it's an investment for future purchase. Nothing is free. Actually his is visible from the road on property of a multi million dollar home on Perrineville Road near Gasko's in Monroe.

That's a stretch with decreased value of the home. With rising utility costs, many people would happily purchase a house with solar. Our electric bills averaged close to $400/month, and now we pay nothing and get money back from the electricity generated by the panels. Should we retire in this home, it will be one less monthly expense to pay. Don't see how that decreases the value of the home. Would some people not like the appearance of solar panels- sure. But many would overlook them and take the benefits. of saving $5,000 or more per year on electric costs.

They are on the back of the house, so they aren’t visible. Also, 75% or so of the homes in the neighborhood have them so there’s no lost value. Added bonus- the solar heats the pool too.

Yup, totally free driving with solar panels. Happy to learn that I’m not actually in denial. My electric bill went up around $25-30 a month in my last house with a charger so that sounds accurate.

Good friends with a Tesla owner (had a Model 3 now has a Model Y) and he says the charging network is OK. Last Easter a bunch of families went to Outer Banks (Corolla). He basically gave up an afternoon because he had to drive 45-50 minutes to Kill Devil Hills, to then wait 45 minutes for a charger to open up, to then spend 30 minutes to charge fully up, to then make the 45 minute drive back to Corolla.

On the otherhand, I left the house to fill up our Tahoe and it took me 20 minutes total from door to door. Took him almost 3 hours.

It's the pool that hurts value, at least from an appraisal standpoint. 😃

The solar panels probably help some.

This is why I keep beating the infrastructure drum.

Human nature being what it is, people will largely ignore EV evangelism (it fades into the marketing hyperbole white noise we're bombarded with 24/7 about all products) and instead focus on and retain stories like that one.

Building out public chargers everywhere so that everybody everywhere can quickly find an available public charger removes what I suspect will be, by far, the greatest impediment to continuing rapid EV adoption. We Americans are spoiled and do not like being inconvenienced in any way.

You and I have that option but those in Chicago rely on super chargers. Hope you are not saying people in cities shouldn’t buy EVs.
Already asked and answered. Learn how your car operates.
You're swallowing the media sensationalism of a few dummies in Chicago and buying into the anti-EV FUD. Unbelievable, especially as an owner of 2 EVs!
I took 5 minutes to read my owner's manual about best charging practices. Never had a cold weather problem.

No one is disputing you can improve efficiency. But all the things they tell you to do is not available to everyone. I park my EVs outside and not plugged in. It has a big impact. Many people who live in urban areas don’t have the option to keep it plug it.

Did your friend used the onboard trip planner? This took 30 seconds to map out on ABRP.

So charge before you call it a day! OMG... why is this so hard for you to understand?
Anyone who parks outside, unplugged, overnight, in the dead of winter, at a low SOC (<10%) is an idiot.
This is on the owner, not the EV.
